Pat,
Dakota Fanning is on Jay Leno tonight.

Use the nerf gun on the TV.

Nerf gun? To shoot a television?

How about a 30:06?

What?
You think he's Elvis?
She's NOT Robert Goulet.
I just watched it. She's a junior in HS.

Even debilitated by the rock she dropped on him, I think Pat can take her.

Only one of them today. They must have had a fight
over which one would get to have the fun, but
seriously it was a good session.
Always leaves me sore. All sorts of things
to strengthen the quad. Knee hurts, as
specialist said... from nerve damage.
I might have to take up cycling... not a bad
place, here, Fruita, to do it.

I am starting to understand the nerve damage
thing. It may be why I've had so much pain all
along. The injury itself, the points of damage, if
you will, seem to heal now in good order, but there
remains pain in the area behind the knee cap and what
feels to be the center of my leg all through from the top
of the knee upward for about five inches. This feels
to be nerve related, if I understand it properly.
The therapist has recommended "eflourage" massage (if
I have the word spelled right, meaning surface
massage, and upward along the leg), but each time I
or she does this, I get really sore, and almost so much
so I worry that it might get too sore to travel. So I have
stopped the massage for now, to make sure I get to the
Boulder show.

I look forward to seeing all my friends there.

I guess that had to be expected, that some would come
out of the wookwork who hate me and who would use the
open blog forum to paint some ugly picture. It's always
been that way, that they either appreciate me or don't,
and very few take a neutral stance. But some have never really
cared to understand what I was about. I think my
writing and films and things have been more the effort of
one who suffers from a kind of self-esteem loss somewhere in
life, or self-loathing, an unconsious effort to find something
about myself that was worthwhile and of worth, a kind of
examination of myself... that will come off to a few as
exactly the opposite, narcissistic and self-indulgent. But
if you look closely, you will find the vast majority of my
work is biographical, and I include myself because I was a
part of the lives about which I have written. None of the
people I wrote about ever took offense to whatever I included
about myself.

Wow, you have a good way with words. I was referring
to the blog that goes with the online article of the
Daily Camera covering the film show in Boulder. They did
a nice front page article for us, but some blogger didn't
waste time chiming in to say what a narcissitic twit Pat
Ament is. I wish I knew, truly, what I ever did to some of
these folk... other than include myself in some of my films
and writings. I always thought a personal perspective was
good, and I've always liked books that include the author's
personal perspective or a book that brings in the personal
side of things. I suppose it will always come off to some as
self-serving. And that has been a kind of style I've used,
not to the liking of everyone, I suppose. A lot of really
good writers, though, such as Jim Perrin, or Tom Higgins, have
liked it.

Patrick, your writing seems to have more energy, again. Anyone whose creativity has any significance will collect a detractor or two.

Pat,

The person who wrote the bizarre comment in the Daily Camera creates their own Hell on earth. Unbelievable. Very petty and tortured.

Congratulations on digitizing some amazing footage and creating a new document. I look forward to seeing it someday. I remember seeing the Gill and Holloway footage at Macky (?) auditorium BITD. It was very inspirational.

Pat,

I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I find it interesting that negative comments like those, whether on a Blog or a website (including this one) are almost always made anonymously.

Thanks for the supportive words, my friends. I
don't pretend to be perfect, by any means. But
I do try to follow my instincts, which seem to have
produced a few good works, such as Master of Rock.

Although the climbers that Pat chose to write about were great in their own right, I wonder had he not brought them to light, as he did, would anyone have known, or have been able to articulate their accomplishments as well as he did, and inspire and put forth a vision, and aspect of the climbing and bouldering world, that made it what it is today. Critics are usually not the visionaries but too often complainers of the after fact, which usually has nothing to do with the essence of the original art form. Reflecting on ones encounters, inspirations, and writing about these personal experience is a noble quest to say the least. Get over It!
