Couchmaster said in 2010 upthread: "It's starting to creep towards the rat hole, and that's a bad, bad thing for our boyz over there."
The late Doug Buchanan in reply then wrote: "It started in the rathole. It stayed in the rathole. It will never leave the rathole. And only idiots believe anything more honest is involved."
Doug made an on the money call. From Michael Yons blog 10-10-2013: "Just months ago Pentagon officials dismissed the idea of a total pullout from Afghanistan. Today we are on the verge of ending negotiations on our future there, leading to the “zero option.” Total withdrawal.
If we execute a zero option, this is my basic worst-case prediction, which is not far from my most likely scenario prediction".... It gets worse, all but talking about the rathole.

Reason magazine is reporting that the Obama administration has signed a force agreement, which if agreed too by the Afghanis, will keep a US military presence in Afghanistan until 2024 and beyond. Take that to the bank.

"The draft agreement (PDF) dated July 25, 2013, which was obtained by Richard Engel of NBC News, states,
This Agreement shall enter into force on January 1, 2015.… It shall remain in force until the end of 2024 and beyond, unless terminated pursuant to paragraph 4 of this Article [requiring two years written notice]. [Emphasis added.]
Under the proposed agreement, the U.S. government would continue to train, arm, and assist the Afghan military. “In addition,” the unsigned document continues, “the Parties acknowledge that continued U.S. military operations to defeat al-Qaeda and its affiliates may be appropriate and agree to continue their close cooperation and coordination toward that end.”........

Seems like a treaty to me.
Is it binding without approval of congress?

As will the Crapistan.
Way to refer to one of the most fiercely independent people on the planet. Only a few world powers have invaded, occupied and tried to tell them how to run their affairs, unsuccessfully.
They're a conservative people Blue, you ought to love them.

I love animals. But I'm light compared to the way Afghanis love animals.
I mean, they really loved the Kentuckey mules the CIA sent over to haul
Charlie Wilson's guns.

of a wild four-hour shootout here.
Afghan officials said all five Taliban attackers were killed, including one who did away with himself.
It took these heavily armed and prepared Americans 4 hours to do away with 4 Taliban who walked into the wrong place. Nice....

I dunno, sounds to me like they did a better job in a gunfight than one might expect of your average humanitarian non-profit organization.

edit: if you see Reuters instead of "Rantburg" (always my go-to news source) it was heavily armed and prepared Afghan security forces that took 4 hours to do away with 4 Taliban.

I know, huh? The day-care next door should have been no regard to 'security forces'. They should have seen this coming.
The residents in the group's house included the two Americans and an Australian, a Malaysian and a South African, who was the group's security adviser. The group runs agricultural and demining programs in Afghanistan, as well as in Israel, Croatia and Vietnam.
The South African 'security advisor' was probably the only armed dude. It was probably a one-of-many attack. Dude performed well actually.
The clearing operation after-the-fact is what took so long.
Chock one up to South African mercenaries!

I've been seeing a lot of headlines lately related to the Heroin epidemic in the US. Without doing any research, the first thing I thought of was the new transport routes from Afghanistan to US that would have opened up in the wake of US occupation there. It seems like a perfectly logical explanation for increasing supply. But skimming various news articles refer more to increased supply from South America. I wonder if this is legit or if it's media manipulation to defer attention away from our government's involvement in increasing this problem (i.e. increasing CIA black budget through opium sales, with the side cost of more addicts in the US).
I found this interesting article during a cursory search:

Nut, a lot of the heroin is going to Southern Europe through Morocco and N. Africa. It would not surprize me to learn that some of it is coming up through S. America to the States.
Hezbollah (Iran/Syria) has notorious ties to S. America interests.
Sandstone, almost all of the oil contracts in post-war Iraq went to China. The ungreatful Iraqis could have paid us back with these contracts, but they f*#ked us. So, I agree, f*#k them!!!

Re Heroin, it's probably not a coincidence that the old Taliban stopped the opium trade. The English have been deep in the Heroin trade since the British East India Company's monopoly on opium in the 18th century and since.

If you mean killing bad guys in an American conflict, yeah I root for killing bad guys.

I'm not sure if that's clear. I hear the Taliban 'used' opiates as a source to gather wealth while publicly condemning it. Even Al-Qaeda affiliates personally use the drugs and profit from them while the leadership condemns it.
The past 2 years has seen a serious opium irradication campaign by ISAF. Not working so well though.
