Hola Rol,
Did you enjoy the Star Wars area and that route "Chewbacca"?
I believe this is the litte black wall that Rol posted, but from the top end. I shot this in the late 80s, maybe 88. I don't think we knew the name of the route, or the rating.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of Dan Curly and whether or not he still resides in San Diego?

8765,
Yes and yes. Curley with an "e". Dan was my main climbing partner for 20 years. He sure had an eye for new lines! Highly motivated and always wanted the sharp end of the rope.
Send me an e-mail: ClimbBaja (at) aol (dot) com
I can put you in contact with him.

Yes, great photos of Dan. Punk Rock has some great routes. Those Star Wars wall photos reminds me of how long ago it was since climbing those routes. Damn time flys.

Last time I climbed with Dan he took me out to sandbag me for the 3rd ascent of "Caught Looking", there was a plastic toy he'd shoved onto the crack. Good times! 5.9 my ass.

"Guts To Open" -- that was a good one. Is it on Bell Dome?

Hey bvb,
Yes, but that would be "Van Bell" dome to you...
"Guts to Open" is still one of my favorites.
Sometime in the 90's we retro-bolted the namesake start by adding a bolt above the first one. Prior to that, a fall would have almost certainly resulted in a broken leg or ankle. The wide crack behind the starting pedestal/slab might as well have a target painted on it.
Our youthful run-it-out attitude and 70's style became tempered with the notion that we didn't want anyone seriously injured or killed on one of our routes.
I can still recall the rattled nerves until I placed the first belay bolt and tied off. Then the wave of relief, soon followed by exhilaration. What a stoke from those old FA's!

Shortly after my last post, Fred Beckey passed on October 30, 2017. He loved camping and climbing at Cañón El Tajo. He did a couple first ascents on the north face of Trono Blanco in the 1970s. The South Face with the "Baile del Sol" direct finish made his book of 100 Favorite North American Climbs.
Many good times with Fred, scouting for new routes on the crags at Tajo.
