I wish Al Gore had never invented climate change. Then I wouldn't have to worry about the bunnies and trees and stuff.

Really, he should have stopped after he invented the Internet. At least that allows lonely old men to entertain themselves on a Saturday afternoon.

Chief, you clearly don't know much about the energy business. First, renewables are a subsector within the energy business. Second, the mainstay of executives of the large-scale wind and solar companies came from traditional energy companies. Third, the battle taking place between renewables and the oil/gas/nuke/coal industries is an internecine war taking place within the energy sector over subsidies.

'AWG', as the mythic, conspiratorial entity you envision, and on a practical matter, is primarily an attack on the coal industry both in the attempt to clean it up and replace it to the degree possible (not happening in the next 100 years) in recognition of its now obvious long-term effects on the planet.

But make no mistake, the pool of money talked about and the subsidies associated with all subsectors within the energy sector will be forever remaining in, and controlled by, energy industry professionals who have simply shifted over from traditional sectors. And once renewable energy production reaches about 15-20% of your total energy requirements you'll find renewable absorbed into and integrated into our largest energy corporations.

Dude, you're tilting at imaginary windmills.

I believe the Climate change is a fluke. The earth experiences cyclic weather changes all the time. Were we ever told the weather would be the same year after year, season after season? Some winters are colder and some summers are hotter. If we all died off the earth would take care of itsself. I also believe the big money side of the green programs.

Bruce , have you read "Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self Absorbed" by Wendy Behary ? This subject should have its own thread.

Hey Doc. Sometimes I have deep gut feelings about things . It's not science , I know, but we can't dismiss gut feelings. If I'm wrong , when will I know?. And I will not discuss your opinion on my religion on this thread. You really didn't have to go there. Hope you're having a good Saturday night.

Well I keep a little record for my local weather and the two summers in 2010 & 2011 in CA were cooler than this past year. Every subject discussed here is open to subjective opinions. Every one is free to feel and think what they want and, in a mature forum, should not be ridiculed by anyone for why they feel or think as they do. I will say anything is possible... maybe the earth will explode one day.

Well, is it fair to lump sum us all ? I am Christian , yes, but I'm open to learning . I'm mot sure who to vote for this year. It's a choice of Fric or Frac to me.

Not to pic stuff to pieces but there could have been some scientist who had to be convinced, thus some controversy had to have come up.

We, as a whole, cannot avoid the extreme unhealthy Narcissist. They are in our Govennment and small businesses and in our families. I have had dealings with them as well. Yes, we all are a bit narcissistic .

The Chief is just expressing his perception of the AGW. I believe he is mostly skeptical as I. It's hard to believe somewhat because we in America haven't experienced the millions dying here. I hope we never do.
Sometimes it just doesn't sound right to our common senses whe we aren't experiencing it and are comfortable in our homes and daily lives. Can you understand that thinking?

Ed, I am curious on your take on NIF and Tokamak projects.

My understanding is the primary obstacle to an NIF-like machine generating commercial power is getting the pellet cycling up to what seems like an implausible rate. If that's the case then I'd have to agree it doesn't seem like a great investment unless there are other uses for the lasers.

The Tokamak projects just seem terminally fifty years out with equally insurmountable containment and materials problems though I did just read about some UW containment research which could help. I know a while back there was some small fusion research out of Ann Arbor that looked promising but it's been a decade or more since I've heard anything more about it.

Any comments on the recent Widom-Larsen LENR papers would be interesting to hear as well.

Chief, I know the strategy. If you don't succumb to their way of thinking you become a target for being called names ( very immature) being questioned of your climbing status ( not important in any discussion other than climbing topics) and your religion or political affiliation. None of which has any bearing on how a person perceives their world. A narcissists will push and push and try to beat you down, and resort to name calling, or any other form of berating . When you don't succumb to that then they have no bearing on those who think differently and are confounded at your ability to move on and let them be.

We are all allowed our opinion, be it right or wrong in others minds and we are all entitled to be treated with dignity and respect . When I feel that line is crosssed then I bow out.

And since we probably won't live to see whatever happens I'll give an honest "who gives a darn?" about this subject. Let's just let them worry and worry over it. Most of them won't live to see if they are right or we are wrong anyway.

Have a great day Chief.

Who gives a darn...? I agree...Climate change can't be true because i think so...Who gives a darn about the farmers who lose their lively hood due to drought..Who gives a darn about our children who may have to live with the consequences of climate change..It's all about me and my cozy christian beliefs...Everyone else is is going to hell...

I'm one of those fortunate to have grown up in the mountains of Alaska. For me global warming is as obvious a if you had seen the face of el-cap fall off.

Glaciers I climbed and skied on as a kid are gone. Ie whole mountain faces ARE COMPLETELY CHANGED.

One of the places I grew up regularly hit 60 below now that hasn't happened in about 15 years.

We now get Thunderstorms several times a summer in a place I only heard 4 thunderclaps in 10 years.

The cheif thinks we can do nothing about it. This seems erroneous logic to me.

Since Human produced CO2 concentration is the main cause it then obviously we can reduce it. YES The earth is also warming on it's own at as slower rate. Slow rates of change are much less disruptive and can be more easily adapted to thus better for civilization

Now I suspect he is correct that we WONT do anything about it. But not that we can't.
