Telemon,
Thank you for sharing. Mark Hudon and I were literally talking about Mason's fall yesterday. We had just rapped off a route in the rain in Kings Canyon, and we were sitting around with chips and salsa, safe on the ground, discussing risk and climbing and freak accidents. I never met Mason but I hear he was one of the good ones. It's good to see you post here and we can all learn from your insight on being there that day. I hope you are mending inside and that the mountains continue to bring you joy and stoke and a wild spirit like they do all of us. See you around maybe.

Telemon....I am so sorry for the loss of Mason. When I heard the explosion and saw the dust and rocks hurtling down towards us from the Grey Bands I thought that a natural rock fall had just occurred.

Many thanks specifically to Neebee, who painted this portrait of Mason for his parents. I met with Mason's parents tonight, and it was a bittersweet reunion, getting together to remember and honor Mason.
Neebee sent this portrait to Mason's parents shortly after the accident. It means a lot to them Neebee- Thank You!

Mason was the first rock climber I ever met. He would put up with all my silly questions that make me cringe now. "Have you climbed Everest?" "Have you ever slept in one of those wall tent things?"
I never thought I would climb, being scared off when I was young by Dan Osman videos on those Fox extreme video compilations and thinking it's all speed free soloing and crazy rope swing falls.
Mason explained the basics and gave me enough confidence in top rope anchors and ropes to even start climbing...
We lost touch for a bit and I ran into him just before his last trip to Yosemite, and we made plans to go spend a day up at Stone Hill (the local climbing area)
I cant believe it's already been this long since he passed, and I'm deeply saddened we never got to rope up together.
and Marc, we've met in passing.. your wife was my sons teacher. Best wishes to you and your family!

Here's a video of Mason on the summit after soloing Aconcagua a few month before our climb.
If anyone knows how to embed that video thank you!
Check out more of Masons videos at climbr4lyfe on youtube.
