We play whatever music we want... (within our abilitys) wish I was good enough to play jazz..... love the mando. banjo on the other hand is only good on some songs and not in an overpowering role. When the banjo is the primary thing you hear and its all about picking as fast as humanly possible it has no soul and is just noise. I liked this enough to learn it and one of my buds learned the banjo part. [Click to View YouTube Video]

Gnome, thanks for the Billy Strings link... bluegrass mastery as a singer and 6 string picker (and he makes it look fairly easy but it's not), and overall sound mix with banjo bass and mandolin sounding pretty darn good.

He really is! ^^^

I see that he's going to be at the music festival in Quincy, CA next summer. Tempted to make it work. The guy had a rough road as a kid, and he's done really well.

Inspired me to take a longer break from work, pick up the guitar (which is pretty rare these days) and free noodle a bit. Hackin' fer sure, but it still feels good. I used to get good ideas, diamonds to pluck out of the coal, from this kind of noodling, and try to work them into the fold.

Hey Tom,

Nice surprise to see you at Maltby.
Too bad we couldn't have found a quiet corner to pick a few tunes.

I was there primarily to collect my new D28A "utility dread" from Gary "The Pick Guy" Wagner who received it from Dennis "Guitar Doc" Berck who had performed some critical inventions to get an otherwise great guitar "right".
The neck angle was way too steep and there was too much relief in the action so Dennis reset the neck and compression fretted the fingerboard to get the action flatter and lower.
Frets like butter now!
Also replaced the bone saddle with vintage ivory and replaced the plastic bridge pins with fossilized ivory pins.
With the tight grained red spruce soundboard and perfect Madagascar Rosewood body, the guitar went from pretty strong and great to down right sparkly.

The 39 D18 I had with is pretty special being transitional still with 1-3/4" nut and no popsicle brace but X Brace pushed back.
A bit more treble and focus and a bit less bass than a Forward X, but benefitting from the still beefy neck for overall power.
Wayne Henderson himself declared it one of the cleaned 30's D18s he'd ever seen and the sound and response are otherworldly.
It pairs well with my 1937 herringbone.

If I knew how, I'd post some pictures and sound clips but alas, I can't figure that one out.

Wintergrass is not far off!
Looking forward to seeing you then if not before!

Here's a link to some Tony Rice at Strawberry in 86 probably at the peak of his powers accompanied by brother Wyatt on rhythm and lead, Jimmy Gudreau mandolin and harmonies and I think Mark Schatz on bass.
Unreal!

Hey Perry,

Great to see you, too! Give me a heads up next time you plan to be at Maltby, and I'll look for ways to get in a smaller circle with you! The large circle tends to be a great bunch of folks, whose sense of rhythm does not always agree with each other's. I was sitting next to one of the regulars who was playing different chords, a different rhythm, and playing it all loudly. No insult intended...they were happy as clams. But...ho boy.

Eventually, I ducked into a coat closet with a few other mando players, and we had a faster than I'm comfortable with--but incredibly fun--all mando jam.

I'm planning to go to Wintergrass again, but will probably skip the whole workshop/show aspect, as I'm there mostly to jam. Looking forward to it!

Cheers,

Tom

Hey, y'all...

For anyone in the general Seattle area tonight, there's going to be a great little concert at 6pm with two instrumental greats: Nick Dumas (mandolin: Special Consensus), and Chris Luquette (guitar: Frank Sollivan & Dirty Kitchen). They'll be backed up on bass by Andrew Knapp.

Nick and Chris are absolutely incredible together. Here's a sample of their music (in this case, with Connor Hutteball backing on bass):

Out of curiosity...are there any Seattle-area bluegrass musicians around?

I'd be down for getting a jam together, if so!

Blame it on "The Double Doink" of the Bears;

It was such a country song.

Hi Tom. I play really exceptional bluegrass on my sound system, and I'm back in Seattle for the next 2 weeks, and would really love to see you guys again before I disappear forever.

Email me and let's sort out a visit.

Tom,

Barring unforeseen misfortune, I plan to be at Wintergrass late Friday night.
At Mark Demeray’s request, my 37 D28 and wideneck 39 D18 will be featured in Saturday’s Vintage Instrument Workshop hosted this year by Tim Stafford and Dale Adkins.
Should be an interesting pairing of two great guitars in the hands of two great guitar players!
Look forward to seeing you.
