How have I avoided knowledge of SCI all these years? Not enough Karma points? But trying to assign blame for this is juvenile. I can only regret not impressing more folks with my hipness over all that time since they first formed, coalesced, if you will...back in Telluride.

The Ad Hawk Writing Club's first draft looked like this when given the task.
Night time in the broccoli fields in Monterey County. The old gray panel truck sits by the roadside, it's engine stilled, but the sounds of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band playing "Safe As Milk" are heard.
There is commotion out in the broccoli stalks as MFM, the Rev, Jokes and "Young Nick" Coffee select produce and attempt to cut it with a dull "belay knife," nothing more than a three-blade pocket knife MFM has owned for the last year, since he purchased it prior to making his way to Yosemite to find work.
It's managed to mangle the broccoli stalks to the point where they are then twisted and broken by the others, whose hands are shredded.
"Why did we even bother?", Jokes asks. "We should have been happy that lettuce was so easy to get."
"But we have a whole pound of margarine and that loaf of bread and the left-over peanut butter. That's not gonna hold us if we don't bulk out our supplies," explains the Rev. "Climbers need calories. And fiber."
Next scene involves freezing around a picnic table in a site in a campground at Pinnacles, the moon low on the horizon, fog creeping around.
The broccoli has been cooked to perfection in a billy on the Rev's Svea stove.
Everyone's amazed at how good it is.
And how miserable the cold is.
And so it goes, one miserable Saturday night in the Pinns, 1969.
