I was just speaking of the colors of the eyes of women from Europe, Believe It or Not, last night with John Decker as we watched the movie Kingdom of Heaven with Orlando Bloom.
John doesn't do jokes, mostly.
But he asked me, he asks,
"What do you get when Orlando Bloom leads a charge against Saladin and every one of his men get killed?
A field of blooming idiots, that's what."
It's too early for this? Who sez?
Or who fez?
No, really, have you gotten your Jan. '16 Natl Geo issue yet?
It features this fold-out cover, a composite made by Stephen Wilkes. There is a separate fold-out in the magazine of this pic, plus another one by Wilkes.
The idea is to portray the Valley from day to night and back. Wilkes made this out of 1,036 photos he took in twenty-six hours.
Believe It or Not!

That army Cushman reminded me that my dads Cushman had an Army Air Corps insignia painted on it when I was a kid. His crew did it for him at the base. Being an officer had its advantages I guess. He sold it when I was still a kid. I wish I had it now

Pine Hills Lodge, Julian CA
I never boxed Dempsey, but I never lived in Julian either.
In August 1925, the Lodge was sold to Fred A. Sutherland, owner and operator of the Sutherland Stage and Yellow Cab. He was a friend of Jack Dempsey, the prize-winning professional boxer. Sutherland built a gym at the Lodge and convinced Dempsey to come to the lodge to train for his second fight against Gene Tunney. On September 23, 1926, Dempsey lost the fight, but the gym he trained in remains standing to this day.
Is this it? You tell me.

My Company Commander in naval boot camp at USNTC San Diego was Chief John Gill (absolute God's truth), a ship's serviceman, or barber.
Outside each recruit company's barracks was a dumpster, which he called Dempsey Dumpsters, not Dempster Dumpsters. I've been calling them that ever since, never knowing till now of the mistaken idempstity.

World affairs and politics are not the same thing.
Politicos and their circuses are to be avoided but it's silly not to understand what's happening somewhere over the border.
I liked this explanation of the history of the Syrian situation by a respected journalist who thinks for himself, Ezra Klein.
