Well, the first half of the thread had at least a few good points and almost bordered on a discussion. The second half is dominated by the reptilian-brained rhetoric of the bigots. If only there was a way to cleave the thread in twain, then the 'conjoined twin' thread (more like a benign yet ugly tumor) could continue wherein Ron and Bluering talk about how America is, in fact, their favorite country...by themselves.

My disagreement isn't at issue here. I don't equate nationalism to religion. I did when I was younger, without realizing it. For me its not a religion. I'm pretty sure that for you, it is.
Which of those do YOU disagree with?
DMT
I disagree with none of them. And neither would the "old crusty white guys' who founded this country.
They specifically attributed the goodwill and virtue of men to religion and faith.
You don't have to though, but don't deny their thoughts.
Lisa summed it up well here, in the words of our Founders;

They were wise, those crusty old white guys...
[D]emocracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy, such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no man’s life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure, and every one of these will soon mould itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will and the execrable cruelty of one or a very few. (John Adams, An Essay on Man’s Lust for Power)
No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders. (Samuel Adams to James Warren, 1775)
Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation. No theoretical checks — no form of government can render us secure. To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people, is a chimerical idea. If there be sufficient virtue and intelligence in the community, it will be exercised in the selection of these men. So that we do not depend on their virtue, or put confidence in our rulers, but in the people who are to choose them. (James Madison, Virginia Ratifying Convention)
Wise beyond their time. Where did that timeless wisdom come from, where was it learned? The Bible.

Wes, is there prospect that earning your doctrate might exalt posts infused with more substance and less insolence?
There's a glut of disrespect on ST, and has been for a long time. But your foul insults and lubricious name calling are way excessive.
Some institutions are wary of what their employees post online. Aren't you alert to the possibility of your department chair reading some of this hateful stuff and reflecting as to its potential effect on the university's prestige?

It's a thread on Gay Marriage. Don't take it too seriously.
If you stayed out of these threads, you would never see that content.
It's not like you would change your opinion regardless of information presented here, so just avoid the conversation. Jennie, myself, Wes, Bluering... we are pretty entrenched in our beliefs on this topic because of our 'ideology' (or lack thereof). Best to stay to the many other amazing climbing threads if you're looking for a Kumbaya moment.
Love ya!

Nope.
But your foul insults and lubricious name calling are way excessive.
As is the ignorance that provokes it.
Aren't you alert to the possibility of your department chair reading some of this hateful stuff and reflecting as to its potential effect on the university's prestige?
I don't have a department chair.
