Yup, I had oversimplified it.
But in the end, all the advertisers are interested in is "eyeballs" and "clicks". Someone commented earlier how fast this thread had grown.
And there is a high proportion of "real climbers" who buy real stuff on this thread.
It's just a business.

I was thinking along your lines at first, but CMac mentioned just yesterday (or Wednesday) that he'd spoken directly with a couple of advertisers. In a niche market like climbing and climbing suppliers business relationships do get more personal.

eea, Skipt is a great guy! It was surprising that someone both mentally and physically challenged could be so mean to the only people he interacted with.

stinkeye, read philo's insult that skipt was referring to. philo deserved that.

i dont know anytime that skipt went after someone that did not already go after him....but i missed the jstan remark he made.

Woman: We don't have a lord.

Arthur: What?

Dennis: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to sort of act as a sort of executive officer for the week.

Arthur: Yes.

Dennis: But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting...

Arthur: Yes I see.

Dennis: ...by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs...

Arthur: Be quiet!

Does anyone think the advertisers read our drivel? Not on your life. They don't have the time

Chessler might be the exception that proves the rule.
But I doubt it, he's got WAYYY too much reading material already. Unless he's taking his iPad to the john.

Edit:

5:55 in the video -- I hear this as saying that excessive posting (even without any offensive content), taking up all the forum bandwidth, is grounds for account deactivation.

Also, that explains some of the recent deactivations. It makes sense to me.

I was in Patagonia for two months so I evidently missed threads that may have been pertinent to Fatty's demise. Prior to my leaving, I didn't see anything coming from him that would be cause for nuking.

Fattrad kept the forum on simmer, with all his bumping and starting of political threads. Others were attracted and brought it up to full boil.

Maybe a post count limit of like 5 a day would help with someone like Fattrad.

Yeah Chris,
I'm with TMC.

Bring Jeff back. He does good things for the community. You can still muzzle him and put him on a short leash.

Looking forward to enjoying this forum again. In my humble opinion, there were the same people typing in the same stuff, and none of it had to do with climbing. Ah, the air is already fresher.

The video response was an excellent idea, Cmac! Thanks for taking the time.

So - post so much garbage you bury the relevant content, and eventually you will be booted. He said something about why waiting til it got(gets) so bad - and I think that makes sense. Everyone can have a run, here and there, where they post crap. They get carried away in the moment...maybe later they realize they could have done a lot less... But when it is over and over, ad nauseum - it DOES impact the whole.

I wish Fatty well. CMac DID say those who were deactivated could email him to discuss it. I think that is a generous thing to do. Some might say "but why not have sent the transgressor's an email saying "tone it down or else?"

Because grown up people shouldn't have to be told they are continuously going over the line. Each of those posters KNEW they were being offensive, and in some way, they seemed to find satisfaction in that. They could have - at any time - posted "I realize my joking hasn't been going over well, that I am upsetting people for my own amusement, and I am going to chance." Instead - they ramped up the bile.

The forum has had an immediate transformation to a more positive experience since this banning happened. That is pretty amazing.
