Cyber-Bullying

definition of cyber-bullying is "when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person."[2] StopCyberbullying.org, an expert organization dedicated to Internet safety, security and privacy, defines cyberbullying as: "a situation when a child, tween or teen is repeatedly 'tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted' by another child or teenager using text messaging, email, instant messaging or any other type of digital technology." Other researchers use similar language to describe the phenomenon.[3][4]

Cyber-bullying can be as simple as continuing to send e-mail to someone who has said they want no further contact with the sender, but it may also include threats, sexual remarks, pejorative labels (i.e., hate speech), ganging up on victims by making them the subject of ridicule in forums, and posting false statements as fact aimed at humiliation.

Cyber-bullies may disclose victims' personal data (e.g. real name, address, or workplace/schools) at websites or forums or may pose as the identity of a victim for the purpose of publishing material in their name that defames or ridicules them. Some cyberbullies may also send threatening and harassing emails and instant messages to the victims, while other post rumors or gossip and instigate others to dislike and gang up on the target.

Kids report being mean to each other online beginning as young as 2nd grade. According to research, boys initiate mean online activity earlier than girls do. However, by middle school, girls are more likely to engage in cyber bullying than boys do.[5] Whether the bully is male or female, their purpose is to intentionally embarrass others, harass, intimidate, or make threats online to one another. This bullying occurs via email, text messaging, posts to blogs, and Web sites.

Though the use of sexual remarks and threats are sometimes present in cyber-bullying, it is not the same as sexual harassment and does not necessarily involve sexual predators.

What's really sad about this particulat thread, is having a super-nice person get dragged through the mud by this Medusa character. He's obviously (a) not a person I would ever want to associate with, and (2) a sicko who get off by making anonymous, sexually loaded slanders via the internet.

No, what is really sad is that veeeerrry few post under their real name.
Goes to the 1st amendment, which sooooo many here hold dear.

Hard to lay those handles on anybody, especially online.
I hung out with the Medusa for a few days in Josh last winter.
Enthusiastic, keen as hell, ballsy climber.
No malice but quick to shoot from the lip before engaging all faculties.
Couldn't tell an eighth from a quarter; at my expense.
His comments on this forum are typically way off line and offensive and he deserves to be ostracized.
Looks like the karmic wheel caught up to him like it does for most of us.
Maybe this will inspire him to work on his social skills.

I can't believe I just read most of this thread.

Thumbs up to Ghost for being such a wise and reasonable human being, Todd and Kris for finding ways to deplore behavior in a friend while not burning bridges, Coz for reexamining the natural tendency to stand up for a buddy, and others for broaching the subject of the misogyny on ST that deters many women from being present here.

I always feel best about my online persona when I behave as I do in the physical world. I hope Medusa comes to a similar conclusion.

Probably a mild streak of sordid voyeurism coupled with procrastinating on annotating four years worth of personal credit card statements to prove business use for an SBA loan.
