The U.S. emitted 15.6 metric tons of CO2 per person in 1950. After rising for decades, it’s declined in recent years to 15.8 metric tons per person in 2017, the lowest measured levels in 67 years.

This Querencia Phase thing seems to be lasting a really really long time. Maybe it never was? Anyhow, wake me when it's over. Say around 2021?

Yeah, the OP absolutely titled the thread wrong.

It should have read:

American has entered the Querencia Phase of its Democracy.

We just need the new Supreme Court to deliver the coup de grace by making Trump, Totalitarian in Chief, or whatever pet title he prefers.

Although you don't know for sure, I'm guessing Trump lives longer than 2021...

The U.S. embassy in London is warning Americans to "lay low" during Trump's upcoming trip to England. The embassy warns that anti-Trump protesters will be out, looking for trouble.

This is the first time, ever, that such a warning has been given to Americans when their president made a trip to England.

Trump's idea of preparing for this week's NATO summit is to falsely accuse the other NATO members of being "delinquent in their payments".

There are no countries that owe the United States money because of NATO. There are no countries that are "delinquent in their payments" with respect to NATO. The countries that are not currently spending at least 2% of their GDP on defense, as agreed in 2014, have until 2024 to do so.

Trump talks to his supporters in simplistic terms about economics, because all they understand is that if they don't make their car payment, the car gets repossessed. Trump talks about NATO the same way, as if the U.S. will foreclose on Germany because it is "delinquent in its payments".

Trump voters wanted things to be drastically different, and they are. They've got their pet wolverine, and he is wreaking havoc and chaos at every turn.

And we hang on to NATO to counter exactly what? The Warsaw Pact--dissolved in, what, 1991? These chain-gang treaties remain a legacy path to global catastrophe. Should have learned this after WWI.

Anyone here want to send their kids/grandchildren to defend Turkey? Poland? Almost exactly one hundred years later, who here wants to defend Europe for a THIRD time with the blood of their children?

Defending Europe was a good thing. Because if the Axis had succeeded in taking over Europe, then they would have then been able to concentrate on the US. Isn't that Obvious? So please don't imply that defending them in the past has any bearing on what might happen in the future. Or implying that it was a mistake in the past that we shouldn't make in the future. That is ridiculous. Germany came very close to having nuclear weapons and jets. Hitler would have used them on the US if we hadn't gone over there and helped stop him. We almost left it too late.

I'm all for defending the national interests--even in Europe. But not by being treaty-bound to defend every nation therein.

BTW, Germany was never close to nukes. Norwegian deuterium facilities and all that, I know, blah, blah. German scientists deliberately drug their feet--while ours did not.

BTW #2, they did have jets. Not just "close."

BTW #3, Germany declared war on us in Dec. 1941.

I understand that they weren't as close as has been historically claimed. But if Japan hadn't attacked us when it did, we would have continued to drag our feat, which would have given Germany more time. It also would have meant that we would have started latter on developing the nuclear bomb. That war hinged on a few key decisions.

Edit: Yes, I know that they had jets. They just hadn't yet ramped them up to full production. That was a close thing.

The Germans were moving their Me-262 production factories underground, but that was taking place a little too late in the war to make a real difference. Not nice working conditions, however.

Lituya-

Well let's see- France and England were left alone to defend Europe against Germany. After the dust had settled over 200,000 American soldiers were dead and more than 10 million total Allied troops had lost their lives uprooting Germany from occupied territory. Civilian and Military casualties could literally be measured by every mile that had to be recaptured.

My Brother was a Cobra pilot stationed in Germany during the cold war. We all went through Checkpoint Charlie and witnessed what Russian occupation looks like. It's a universally accepted strategy to have forward bases with a rapid and comprehensive counter attack strategy against Russia- oh...except Lituya who happens to be very assertive in his foreign policy prowess.

We use bases in Turkey to defend our oil supplies- Nato is really a pitbull for our consumption by defending trade routes and raw materials. I'm amazed by the fools that are willing to buy into Trump's rhetoric when he is clearly owned by Putin.

The alliance has worked extremely well because everyone understood that attacking an ally was a death wish. The alliance was airtight. Russia is hardly less expansionist than it was during the Cold War days, and many bordering countries are still legitimately scared. (Crimea, anyone?). And btw, we were the first country to call for the aid of our NATO allies a mere 17 years ago when we were attacked by al aqeda. How soon some of us forget. Scratch that: how easily cultist trumpkins are gaslighted.

The reason for NATO is not to "protect Europe" from Russia or any other so-called threat. You people need to stop thinking of countries as if they are individual people. Russia did this. Germany did that. Simplistic bullsh#t.

The reason for NATO is empire and American hegemony.

Think back in history - were the King's men of England garrisoned in the colonies to protect the colonies from external threats? Of course not. The King's men were in the colonies as enforcers.

With NATO the U.S. gets to install massively powerful military bases on foreign soil, and did and does just that. Once installed except in rare instances they are not removed. Bam.

Why? For the good of the people in Germany, France, UK? A freebie from Murica?

Laughably, no. TANSTAAFL.

DMT

Tell that to our allied Baltic states who desperately want to keep NATO intact.
