America must respond to the calamity that’s befallen the working class

If America doesn’t respond to the calamity that’s befallen the working class, we will have Trumps as far as the eye can see.

A few Democrats are getting the message – pushing ambitious ideas like government-guaranteed full employment, single-payer health care, industry-wide collective bargaining, and a universal basic income.

Even though the down and out Trump supporters would be among the ones that would get the greatest benefit from some of those policies, partisan identity politics has made them very hostile to all of those.

What most really want is good paying jobs, respect, and strong communities. But in small towns, and some not so small towns, good paying jobs aren't coming back and a lot of young workers leave to find jobs elsewhere. A few towns will hit the lottery and buck the trend but that is the exception.

What they are most responding to is lies: I will bring back coal and manufacturing jobs and the politics of resentment. If Obama created it, I will gleefully destroy it. I may be living in poverty but at least I can have fun making libtards mad.

I don't really see how Dems make much progress among those voters without engaging in the same sorts of tactics. Hillary actually had a lot of wonkish policies. They got zero media attention and did her no good on the campaign trail.

The Koch brothers are two prime examples of inheritors of wealth who believe themselves to be superior humans because they have a lot of money. Their self-conferred role in society is to use their inherited wealth to interfere in other people's lives, such as at the Raleigh, North Carolina, school district, and with donations to universities tied to faculty selection decisions.

“We propose the abolition of the governmental Postal Service. The present system, in addition to being inefficient, encourages governmental surveillance of private correspondence. Pending abolition, we call for an end to the monopoly system and for allowing free competition in all aspects of postal service.”

“We oppose all personal and corporate income taxation, including capital gains taxes.”

“We support the eventual repeal of all taxation.”

Etc. etc.
WTF? Is this really what they were proposing? How were they going to pay for the military without taxes? Privatization of Inland Waterways? Wow. Guess they probably wanted to get rid of the 'justice' system. Would prisoners pay for their jails? How would that work, as they can't actually hold (except the $1/day stuff in prison) jobs while jailed unless.... slavery. Oh, oh, what about debtor's prison? Good ideas all.....

There are some real wackos out there. Oh, also, the Constitution requires a postal system........

U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials

Trump's latest act of international terrorism was to use economic threats to derail a WHO resolution to promote breast feeding.

Ecuador dropped its widely-applauded proposal after U.S. WHO delegates threatened the country with trade sanctions and loss of economic aid.

The U.S. delegates objected to the resolution's disclosure that commercial baby formula has been shown to be unhealthy for babies.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/08/health/world-health-breastfeeding-ecuador-trump.html

The official U.S. position is that corporate profits are more important than the health of babies.

Trump's tactic of bullying a foreign nation into economic submission recalls the British army attacking China until they agreed to accept opium in lieu of silver.

The leaders of the Brexit movement in the United Kingdom are jumping ship as it becomes more obvious that leaving the European Union will lead to economic chaos and crisis. The Brexit rats chewed holes in the hull of the good ship Britain, and now that it's going down, they're fleeing.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/09/world/europe/david-davis-brexit-resign.html

Brexit front man and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigned today. David Davis, Britain's chief Brexit negotiator with the EU, resigned yesterday. The Brexiters who created a huge mess for the UK are abandoning their disastrous cause, and leaving it for other, non-Brexiters, to clean up.

Like the U.S. Presidential election in 2016, the Brexit election was perverted by Russian interference and disinformation. Putin's plans for disruption and chaos in the West are working in Britain.

Trump is going to Britain this week. As Putin's stooge, he endorses the Brexit decision, and hopes that the European Union will break apart completely. Trump is expected to be antagonistic to British Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to maintain trade relations with the EU.

Trump has done nothing, or less than nothing, to prevent Russian interference in 2018 elections.

There is a Brexit-like referendum on the California ballot, Citizens for Cal 3, which proposes splitting the state into three parts. The idea is to gain four more U.S. Senators in Congress. Even if local voters approve of the split, Federal approval of the scheme is highly unlikely. Congress would have to approve the addition of any new states to the union, even places currently within the United States.

One of the main backers of Citizens for Cal 3 is tech billionaire Tim Draper. He has surreptitiously hired a political strategist who was instrumental in the success of the Brexit campaign.

The Brexit political strategy was that "facts don't work" when luring voters to support a nonsensical proposal.

https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/state/california/article214403694.html#storylink=hpdigest

Arron Banks, the main financial backer of Leave.EU, previously credited Gunster for crafting an "America-style media approach" and advising him that "facts don't work," according to The Guardian. Banks told The Guardian that campaigns have to "connect with people emotionally. It's the Trump success."

Great post, MGuzzy.

Trump's White House staffers, and some GOP members of Congress, are whining that the administration's highly-unpopular policies are causing irate citizens to confront them in public. At least six incidents, involving Mitch McConnell, Scott Pruitt, Stephen Miller, Kirstjen Nielsen, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Kellyanne Conway, have been reported in the news. Some, like Stephen Miller, have been harangued multiple times.

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Viciousness-Trump-aides-endure-public-fury-13059587.php

The GOP, which is the party of intolerance, and the Trump administration, which has called for physical violence against political opponents, are now asking for tolerance and civility towards themselves.

To those whiners, especially Kellyanne Conway, I say:

"The irate citizens gave alternative civility."

Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods won’t touch Ivanka Trump’s foreign-made products for her fashion line.

While Trump rails at Harley-Davidson motorcycles for moving some production to Europe to dodge EU tariffs, the first daughter and senior White House adviser has never manufactured a single product for her Ivanka Trump brand on American soil.

Trump enacted tariffs Friday morning on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods, affecting hundreds of products from boats to medical devices and auto parts. Products spared include those manufactured by his daughter.

That means Chengdu Kameido Shoes in Sichuan province can continue to supply shoes for the Ivanka Trump brand as it has in the past. It’s currently bidding for a new contract to manufacture 140,000 pairs of shoes for Trump’s company, a spokesman told The South China Morning Post.

Hangzhou HS Fashion in Zhejiang province also said it’s filling orders for orders for the G-III Apparel Group, which supplies shoes to Trump’s brand.

Until January 2017 all of Ivanka Trump’s products were made in factories in China and Hong Kong, research director Chris Rogers at Panjiva, a global trade data tracking company headquartered in New York, told Politico. Since then, some manufacturing has apparently been moved to other overseas factories in Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam.

I haven't followed this thread all that much, so I apologize if somebody has already pointed this out.

I started wondering, if Trump was otherwise the same -- all the demonstrable lying, self-promotion, cheating in business, multiple bankruptcies, cheating on his wives, not revealing his taxes, oh yeah, tweeting, insulting our allies, etc., -- but for liberal causes, would you expect that 80 percent or more of Democrats would approve of him at this point? I'm pretty sure, not. And the reason is this; conservatives are willing to let the character issues slide as long as their ideology and (generally losing) position in the culture wars is felt to be properly represented. Without ideology, the average human being would be revolted by Donald Trump. I mean, let's just say he was a movie character. Is he going to be your hero?

facts don’t work. Oh yea, there’s a fact. Too bad we weren’t the ones who learned that fact, when we learned to believe the “facts” that we believe.

Propaganda bots have a poor command of the English language.

Brexit political strategist Gunther stated that "facts don't work" when promoting an illogical and nonsensical political proposal to voters. His statement meant that it is counter-productive to present facts when promoting a nonsensical proposal.

In other words, he said that "facts don't work" when you are attempting to deceive voters into acting against their own self-interest. If intelligent voters obtain facts about a nonsensical proposal, they will reject it.

Gunther said that pushing a nonsensical proposal needs to be done through emotional appeal, because in that situation "facts don't work".

At no time did anyone, Gunther or otherwise, say that in all situations "facts don't work", and, therefore, we should abandon all faith in facts and accept the non-factual BS-13 that Trump and his administration present to us.

It depends on what you mean by "character issues". If a politician cheats on his wife, I would generally say that is between the politician and his wife. If a politician is going to go on and on about family values and opposition to gay rights, and then it turns out they get caught in bed with a male prostitute, that is absolutely something they should be called on.

I don't care about Trump's cheating. I do care that he lies about simple facts and his supporters go along with it. I do care that he reduces our politics to the level of kindergarten taunts. I do care that he seems to believe that the levers of government exist to serve his political purposes ("lock her up", "can you see your way to letting this go"). I do care that he is dissing our European allies and sucking up to Putin. I do care that he is attacking the checks and balances that exists to, among other things, limit the power of the presidency. I do care that he is doing real damage to unwritten political norms. I do care it is hard to imagine what it would actually take for a president to have financial conflict of interest in the post-Trump world. And I could go on and on, but for the moment, I won't.

It is damn near funny, the Trump supporters are backing his every move, even here.

Careless of who all of this may affect. It is really going to bite them in the ass when all this division hits the populace and it’s economy.

Feeling harrassed are they? Facism has consequences.

YOU are the fascist Jon. Maybe people will come to your hospital bed and harass you for what you believe.

Harass you while you try to heal, sleep and spend time with your family.

If you support this kind of behavior you are truly a fascist c**t.

When you get well, grow some balls and go harass these people that you hate but don't know.

Applies to all of the ST-pussies.
