For those who are sick of Cali-bashing!
NATIVE SON
The smell of tarweed
or what I call tarweed
is my smell of clover
I come around here
and its big aroma
flat knocks me over
These gentle-sloped cones
that I once roamed free
seemed clad year-round in dry
Brown and green
is all we seen
and was like to make you cry
The hills will hardly change
but for one short barely-wet season
and it calls to mind the past
This place won’t never change
like an old gypsy like me
who might could be home at last

Flocking out my back door
Cause me no endowonder
Give me some credence

If you don't believe it
Where you gonna run to
When the world's on fire?
Use your bosom for my pillow
When the world's on fire.
Sowing on the mountain.
Reaping in the valley.
You're gonna reap just what you sow.

Just got home from Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch.
Imagination sets in, pretty soon I'm singing,
CHORUS:
Doo, doo, doo, Looking out my back door.
There's a giant doing cartwheels,
A statue wearing high heels.
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn.
A dinosaur Victrola listening to Buck Owens.
CHORUS
Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon?
Doo, doo doo.
Wond'rous apparition provided by magician.
CHORUS
Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon?
Doo, doo doo.
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrows.
CHORUS
Forward troubles Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn.
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrows.
CHORUS

I found (in my limited and naive experiences that have composed my life up to this point), that when you interact with people and treat them not as refugees or someone to be pitied, but as real people, they tend to respond in kind. They want to share their way of life, because they tend to be proud of their culture and the little that they do own.

Advent - (Four Sundays Before Christmas)
Candle
Advent is not widely celebrated in England, its celebration actually originated in Germany, although in the church calendar Advent is the official start of the run up to Christmas.
Two traditions that have caught on in England are the Advent calendar and the Advent candle. The Advent Calendar originated in the 19th Century from the protestant area of Germany. Protestant Christian families made a chalk line for every day in December until Christmas Eve. Before long, commercial entrepreneurs started replacing the ephemeral chalk lines with printed calendars. The first known Advent Calendar is for the advent of 1851. Nowadays it is usually a thin rectangular card with 24 or 25 doors. The doors are numbered 1-24/25. Door number 1 is opened on the 1st of December, door 2 on the 2nd etc. Behind each door there is a Christmas scene (but the most popular ones have a chocolate behind each door) .
An Advent candle often has 25 marks on it, a bit of the candle is burned down by one mark each day. In some homes, 24 candles are kept, one for each night from December 1 through Christmas eve. One candle is lit for a while on December 1, then a new candle is added each day for the 24 day period. However, it is now more common to have four candles for the four weeks before Christmas. One candle is lit on the first Sunday, two the second week and so on. The candles were often placed on a wreath upon the dining room table. Advent candles are lit in many homes, schools and churches, in England, with a final central candle lit on Christmas Day; these are often on a hanging decoration known as an "Advent Crown." They became exceedingly popular due to a children's TV programme called Blue Peter, who every year made an advent crown from old coathangers, tinsel and candles! Well, they used to use candles, but because of health and safety insanity they now give instructions using baubles - it's not really the same...
Across the street, the Cohns celebrated their strangely similar ritual of Hannukah by lighting their candles as well. It isn't as easy or simple to understand as many Gentiles might think. Just as the Cat'licks do, they have subtle variances in the appliances used in ritual.
The Hanukkah menorah...is, strictly speaking, a nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day holiday of Hanukkah, as opposed to the seven-branched menorah used in the ancient Temple or as a symbol. The ninth holder, called the shamash ("helper" or "servant"), is for a candle used to light all other candles and/or to be used as an extra light. The menorah is among the most widely produced articles of Jewish ceremonial art. The seven-branched menorah is a traditional symbol of Judaism, along with the Star of David.

Happy turkey extermination day!!

At 4:20, the territory around Middle Earth got soaked in a cloudburst. I had just gone out to the bank and was glad I had the Red Roadent handy.
Once in the comfortable atmosphere of the tobacconist's lair, I realized that the names of climbs (and a thread about this same thing materialized out of nowhere at this same time on ST!) have similarities to the names given to tobacco blends.
It is indeed a small world, or maybe it's just my own mindishness that's showing, but it is odd, coincidental, and I expect this sort of thing all the time, now I'm older and have seen more of the world through my aging eyes and the eyes of Supertopo. (Thank you, thank you, thank you all, without fanfare, just thanks.)
FYI, my tobacco selection was "Plum Crazy." "Nutty Buddy" is a FA of mine from the seventies in YV. It could describe a tobacco blend quite easily.
As long as I was in the store, I sat for a long spell BS-ing with a Bus Driver, one LaMont , who drives for YARTS. He and I talked of climbing (a senseless avocation to him), and the rest of the group of fogies were truly amazed that I had done some walls, let alone grappled with the grape vines "up there." I assured them I had used them in my earlier days, before the hordes of yuppies tore them out and messed the place up with tat and left-behind sh#t.
Now that was a bull session.
And that cloudburst...I wish I'd been in the Merced Canyon when the thunder rolled. Maybe it will keep raining for a few days.
TIOGA PASS IS CLOSED, BTW!
GLACIER POINT ROAD, AS WELL!
Amyjo, you made it back out of there safely and in time for T-Day!

UC Merced Professor to speak on “Climate and Wildfires in the West.”
from the Merced County Times.
The Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS) will offer a presentation by Anthony Westerling, Ph. C., associate professor of Environmental Engineering and Geography at UCM on the topic of “Climate and Wildfires in the West” on
Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m
Sierra Hall Rm 132
West Campus of Modesto JC
2201 Blue Gum Avenue
Modesto, Alabama
The event is open to the public. Admission and parking are free.
Westerling will discuss how forests in the western US, which have been intensively managed by federal agencies for over a century, have been affected by changes in fire suppression resources, technologies, and strategies, as well as by land use changes and development pressures.
Globular warming has led to an increase in large, severe fries in recent decades, a trend that is expected to continue in the coming decades as climate change continues to excellerate due to the changes in the atmosphere.
Westerling will talk about how the forests respond to a changing climate, with temperaturd and precupitation strongly influencing the types and characteristics of vegetation that fuels wildfires, their spatial arrangement, and how the respond to human actions.

Everything

YOU needed to be
Is crap
Did your thing
Didn’t do theirs
They done did it
They had their day
Been yourself
Didn’t be them
You’ve just been you
Be glad it’s true
Know yourself;

I tend to agree with that analysis, overall.
Amyjo and I had a similar take, or at least she suggested it then, and I agreed, on the birding trip out that direction, when we passed the same group on the road to Snelling and Merced Falls.
She didn't use the language, but had the same cynicism--no black men, and of course, women can't keep up with the gossiping!
