It must be so weird to be so passionately devoted to a life of bull shlt. The projection from these people to justify their views and actions always makes me laugh. I wonder if they toss and turn at night because their subconscious knows their thoughts and actions are so in conflict with reality, or if the deception is so deep that even their subconscious believes it.

the Fet - you're probably correct in thinking that the Warmists are
suffering, but they deserve it for buying into an apocalyptic fantasy that can't come true.

So there you go Warmists. Your fantasy problem is solved by coal.
Move along now. Nothing more to see here.

Look, CC used a Big Word! Mainstream media.. It's a whack-o opinion piece written by some unknown and posted on the internet.
Good job there Corniss, Keep up the sharp-shooter buried in ya...

A couple of recent abstracts from the reality-based community (emphasis added):
Zeebe (2012) "History of Seawater Carbonate Chemistry, Atmospheric CO2, and Ocean Acidification," Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Science.
Humans are continuing to add vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere through fossil fuel burning and other activities. A large fraction of the CO2 is taken up by the oceans in a process that lowers ocean pH and carbonate mineral saturation state. This effect has potentially serious consequences for marine life, which are, however, difficult to predict. One approach to address the issue is to study the geologic record, which may provide clues about what the future holds for ocean chemistry and marine organisms. This article reviews basic controls on ocean carbonate chemistry on different timescales and examines past ocean chemistry changes and ocean acidification events during various geologic eras. The results allow evaluation of the current anthropogenic perturbation in the context of Earth’s history. It appears that the ocean acidification event that humans are expected to cause is unprecedented in the geologic past, for which sufficiently well-preserved records are available.
Payne & Clapham (2012) "End-Permian Mass Extinction in the Oceans: An Ancient Analog for the Twenty-First Century?" Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Science.
The greatest loss of biodiversity in the history of animal life occurred at the end of the Permian Period (252 million years ago). This biotic catastrophe coincided with an interval of widespread ocean anoxia and the eruption of one of Earth's largest continental flood basalt provinces, the Siberian Traps. Volatile release from basaltic magma and sedimentary strata during emplacement of the Siberian Traps can account for most end-Permian paleontological and geochemical observations. Climate change and, perhaps, destruction of the ozone layer can explain extinctions on land, whereas changes in ocean oxygen levels, CO2, pH, and temperature can account for extinction selectivity across marine animals. These emerging insights from geology, geochemistry, and paleobiology suggest that the end-Permian extinction may serve as an important ancient analog for twenty-first century oceans.

The ocean acidification events are key to the petroleum industry, because those anoxic conditions lead to carbon preservation in the source rocks..the organic shales..which actually generate hydrocarbons.
A lot of study has gone into those rocks, especially since they are now the horizontal targets.
The big mesozoic event is what sourced the oil in the middle east and many other mesozoic or younger basins.
And it was very, very, hot when that happened. Plenty of evidence for that. Also lots of evidence for high CO2 levels. I can direct you to a couple of cool journal articles about that as well.

Interesting correlation between parts of the above, and hardcore Christians.
No other belief is correct. You're either with us, or you're against us.
It's all good. Radiation, mercury in some vaccines, GMO food, continuous war, and geo-engineering will slowly cull the masses of useless eaters.
Pardon me for sounding so negative. I call it as I see it.

NWO,
The argument,
"You are for us or against us."
Is what is called a false dichotomy. It is logically null. I know that you know this, but it is a very formal and well defined logical error.
It is meaningless, but politicians break every logical and rhetorical rule in the book. Mainly because most people are like cattle, and don't care.
I doubt that a guy like CC will ever change his mind. That is also a huge mistake.

CC. The role of particulates and aerosols in climate has been known for decades. That is why we can get unusually cool years when a massive volcanic eruption happens.
It is one of the variables in the equation.
Climate science is pretty crude as far as being able to make absolute predictions. There is an error bar that people take advantage of.
Climate is a huge system of non linear processes. Those are tough to model, but the gist is the same.

NASA Scientists Rebel Against Global Warming
By Douglas V. Gibbs
According to World Net Daily 49 former members of NASA, including
astronauts, engineers, and scientists, have come to the conclusion that not
only is the Global Warming scam a bunch of hooey, but that efforts by top
executives of NASA to use the federal agency to promote the hysteria over
the global warming lie is wrong.
In a letter to the NASA administrator, these great minds accuse NASA of
endangering “the reputation of science itself” by advocating the
“extreme” position that carbon dioxide is the major cause of climate
change. According to the letter, the agency needs to “refrain from
including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases” and
contend that the claim “that man-made carbon dioxide is having a
catastrophic impact on global climate change”
is “not substantiated.”

The role of particulates and aerosols in climate has been known for decades.
This is disastrous misinformation (in terms of real understanding, not Geology 100).
Aerosols and clouds represent the areas of climate science (with respect to radiative forcing) with the greatest uncertainty and lowest levels of scientific understanding.
The courses I have taken in aerosol physics, radiation transfer and cloud physics clearly demonstrated how ridiculously complicated the energy budget component of the earth system is, particularly in light of modern perturbations to the system. Improvements in understanding of these topics will be extremely helpful in grasping the causes and effects of our actions on the radiation budget (and perhaps the geophysical fluid dynamical response)!

those who lack any comprehension of the underlying physics of this.
For example, the 50,000 members of the American Physical Society:
Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.
The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.
If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.
Because the complexity of the climate makes accurate prediction difficult, the APS urges an enhanced effort to understand the effects of human activity on the Earth’s climate, and to provide the technological options for meeting the climate challenge in the near and longer terms. The APS also urges governments, universities, national laboratories and its membership to support policies and actions that will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
The American Geophysical Union has more than 50,000 members as well:
The Earth's climate is now clearly out of balance and is warming. Many components of the climate system—including the temperatures of the atmosphere, land and ocean, the extent of sea ice and mountain glaciers, the sea level, the distribution of precipitation, and the length of seasons—are now changing at rates and in patterns that are not natural and are best explained by the increased atmospheric abundances of greenhouse gases and aerosols generated by human activity during the 20th century. Global average surface temperatures increased on average by about 0.6°C over the period 1956–2006. As of 2006, eleven of the previous twelve years were warmer than any others since 1850. The observed rapid retreat of Arctic sea ice is expected to continue and lead to the disappearance of summertime ice within this century. Evidence from most oceans and all continents except Antarctica shows warming attributable to human activities. Recent changes in many physical and biological systems are linked with this regional climate change. A sustained research effort, involving many AGU members and summarized in the 2007 assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, continues to improve our scientific understanding of the climate.

The clincher that Ed is in on the Carbon Scam: he can only talk the talk
but will not walk the walk as he burns evil fossil fuels needlessly to go
on climbing trips to the Sierra, thereby destroying the climate by his
warmist logic.

TGT blows out the sidewalls with a 2007/2012 comparison of Cryosphere Today
ice maps for April 22, but wisely does not try to interpret them.
The Cryosphere Today (U. Illinois) server has been down for a couple of weeks,
so there's no point in visiting them now. NSIDC has stayed up to date, here's
their graphic this morning:
Sea ice extent is above average in the Bering Sea and Sea of Okhotsk, following
a cold winter in that area. This means little for summer ice because at those low
latitudes, pretty much all of it is going to melt soon.
The Barents Sea and Kara Sea, at much higher latitude, show below-average extent
reflecting a warm winter in that area. Albedo warming of high-north open water
could extend melting into the central Arctic this summer; it's an area to watch.

In the pan-Arctic image above, the Russian island of Novaya Zemlya is that crescent-shaped
caterpillar separating blue from white at about 3 o'clock. The white part is the Kara Sea,
which looks ice-covered in the NSIDC map. The Kara Sea froze up very late this winter,
so much of its ice might be thin. Here's a closer view of that area. Novaya Zemlya's
glaciated west coast is conspicuous rising from bottom center of the picture, taken
from this morning's MODIS Arctic mosaic. Seen a bit closer (1 pixel = 1 km) the solid
ice is not so solid. That's what makes this stuff interesting to watch and hard to predict.

Here are DJFMA (NH winter-spring) TS anomalies for 2011-2012 that Chiloe is referring to:
The very warm winter experienced in the midwest/northeastern US is quite evident as well.
Sea ice extent and the resultant implications for polar cyclogenesis (due to baroclinic enhancement of vorticity and temperature advection) are quite interesting since the global transport of heat and angular momentum are tightly coupled to midlatitude eddies.
Regarding ENSO, long term predicability will not be achieved until the mechanism for triggering ENSO events is understood. Currently it is thought to be transient midlatitude cyclones impinging into the tropics and resulting in the weakening/reversal of the trades that kicks off the Bjerknes feedback.
Until the mechanism for ENSO is captured, our modeling capabilities are severely limited. Not to mention the extent to which one should trust, let alone 'believe' any model solutions, particularly over a long integration period. More money please! :)

The American Physical Society's stance is causing some thinkers to leave because it is unacceptable to them because we can discuss the origin and ending of the universe, the mass of a proton, what time really is, however it is "incontrovertible" that we completely understand the Earth system and its myriad complexities.
Ding, ding! We have a new winner for the most ignorant statement on ST! Can you name one "thinker" who has quit the APS because of this?

GONG!!!!!!
Mike Bolte, our latest winner for 'doesn't read the Journal!'
Wall Street Journal, January 26 2012:
"In September, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ivar Giaever, a supporter of President Obama in the last election, publicly resigned from the American Physical Society (APS) with a letter that begins: "I did not renew [my membership] because I cannot live with the [APS policy] statement: 'The evidence is incontrovertible..."

Sure, it is an opinion piece, but once we stop thinking, we stop understanding. And that is a great loss to Planet Earth.
FWIW, I am funded under the National Science Foundation to do climate research. My Ph.D. work is focused on convection in the northwest Pacific Ocean (via air-sea interactions with the Kuroshio and cold air outbreaks from the Asian continent) and involves high resolution numerical modeling of the atmosphere and attempting to couple the atmospheric model (WRF, Skamarock et al. 2005) to a sweet super high resolution ocean model being developed at Scripps to understand upscale forcing of hemispheric wave dynamics and extratropical cyclogenesis.
I wrote the proposal and it was funded. I must NOT be a thinker, then?
