I didn't buy the farm, just got real sick from CHF, spent six days in the same hospital I just came out of two weeks before.

I had the liver exam (no problems there) and the post-op follow-up with the surgeon on the first. The surgeon looked at his work, pronounced me on the road to recovery with the rehab, but commented on my really swollen legs.

He took little note, however. It's a sign of CHF, meaning uncontrolled hypertension, swelling from edema, shortness of breath (NOT to be confused with COPD, which this case was by the surgeon), and pallor. He let me go with a promise to have a new, fresh albuterol inhaler available to me at the pharmacy. I staggered out, pale and determined to get to the pharmacy and wait...then wait for the VA's shuttle van back to Los Banos and the intercity bus from there to Merced at 5:30.

A nurse noticed my slow progress and color and sat me down as I left the cardio-surgery area. She called a young resident and he pointed me to the ER, not the pharmacy. I was observed one nignt, then admitted and given the treatment (lots of IV Lasix to clear as much fluid from my body as fast as possible). So I peed and peed and have become better over t he course of the week.

I've got to watch my diet and the weight and the sodium intake better, is the meaning of all this. I have, in truth, slacked off, but I really did blow it by not being more conscious of my state of CHF, a constant battle to maintain stasis in the body...something to which hooblie can relate.

We were talking of that same thing on the drive up to Palo Alto on the morning of the first.

That was some drive, too. Out of Modesto on 132, then down I-5 to Dal Puerto Canyon and up that to Mt. Hamilton and Lick Observatory and then down into San Jose on Alum Rock Avenue.

We were only thirty minutes late, as it turned out.

Bit of backstory:
Monday evening hooblie came driving into Merced on his way to see Vitaliy's climbing presentation in Marin. He offered me a ride to Palo Alto. That's how this little adventure began.

It was great meeting yet another SuperiorTopian, I must say.

So what's up with you, TravelKing?

Yesterday, Larry Jones drove me down to Merced. Not content to go over Pacheco Pass, he went back over Altamont instead, which meant going over the Hayward Bridge, getting bushwhacked by the traffic in Hayward for some reason."I'd have gone the other way" is not what you say to the golden goose.

Larry's faithful Frenchies accompanied us. Sophie has low white cells, is listless, and has only cost Larry $6,500 so far this year in vet's bills. She swallowed his sleep mask!

ugh 1st it is frank the BS buffalo that represents frontier(small case 'f') the lame provider of all services that are bundled to save what turns out to be mere pennies, then when it goes 'down' or as I prefer to say - Kerplop, =
Close the system wait it out . . . I was mid post that was to highlight the monkey but now that is a lost cause.

The array of surveillance cameras sits in a corner of a school soccer field. It is a sad thing and a scary way to think that my kids will grow up thinking this is normal.

Where would I be if the corners of every place I liked to lurk, were under constant surveillance ?
Maybe in a fine Law partnership or as the convict; a paying client.

My first test of adulthood was turning my back on all of that High School Hi-jinx.

I lived in a Hood, suburban and rural but from the wrong side of the tracks . The other side was a stratospherically, in parts, up-scale place with mansions that lined the streets Streets Like Prospect street . The high school was where the Velvet Underground played it's first gig.
A Progressive neighborhood. So to say we were a gang? - or a group of kids who were up to getting into all sorts of things that often tipped the needle of the register way past the red trouble zone.

I was a good one, to be honest and brought in well more than I was expected to.
To cryptic for most but not all.
I and big Andy Calff split the cost of an honest to goodness real Kern-mantel rope. I had three lines of gold line that dated back to '72, this was in '78-79. So as much as it was a beating that I was cruising for; the well known exit from any gang, I had a plan to avoid that nastiness.
I had taken up with the one kid that No One not even the cops wanted to do anything about. His 3 older sisters had been the talk of the town for a decade by then. Andy stood 6 foot 10, at 17 and came from a family of wealthy Irishmen. His dad was once in the early organization of the famous Merriil ,Lynch (Fenner, Pierce, . when I met his sister at a kinder hook thing in a field she thought that I was magic and took me home, where I met Andy. He may have been sweet on me? I don't know; by college he was producing Garcia band shows but still had no girl friend, uh... just saying.
Andrew was a monster and a snap taker who in his teens had Nikons. He once got drunk during a performance that he was charged with taking the photos of. instead of staying in the wings, he was on stage and staggering to . a bad scene ensued, I was his Light man but when he drunkenly pulled closed the hatch door to the cat walks above the stage, I was trapped and so watched the fiasco from that hot vantage point.

ugh not again . . . was into this but the internet connection will be failing again , I can tell 'case the TV blinks and kerplops 1st. . .

the guy can really handle his alternating lateral G-forces during the occasional bout of deep slumber. whatever was keeping that cabesa from lolling about while I charged hard into consequtive lefts and rights quit the scene the very instant Sidekick Quickdraw came alive to resume image aquisition lest another smidgen of terrain escape notice.

What a life
Go to the trouble to turn out a bunch (100's maybe) of safe belayers - so able lead climbers. I have sat at tables with the best climbers of their generation.
Climbed with those who's accounts we all read about.
Taken falls on spaced gear I placed and pins that I know to be 50 yrs old
and survived to climb into my 50s too.
I wanted to swing and go to live music if not run a band of prankster whanna bees. The required need to hide my head and keep it a low profile life has left me asking -
Then to have no belayers or rope guns to extend the fun into my golden years. - WTF?
I can say that I am proud of my clean climbing heritage & that Craft & Suhl. the Vulgarian old guard,
did not drop me, when they were throwing me up to holds no one had hit yet, in those days, now so long ago.
Is all I need to do to go to a climbing gym?Maybe. . . .
I'm not a sheeplike thing I don't use deodorant to mask the perfume of life!
If you fart I say hey, if I fart I tell that it was me even when it was silent but deadly.
If you stink, I tell you so and take it on the chin when I stink .
Sorry that I hurt your feelings, and that I am a bigger prick than most.
I'm a lifer on the rocks - you'll see me climbing till I can't
and then with any luck, I will stop breathing.
Is there a cure to this addiction? Sure but I'm not interested. I'm in rehab - away from a climbing area - and raising a family p. Raising them not to Climb, but climb the ladder of a successful life. If that includes climbing mountains or rocks, great but what I want to teach them is to find the way to roads that lead around the world - going up and over is the hardest way to go. And to soon you're dead.

Reminds me, DMT, that Elrond's name means "elf of the cave" or "elf of the dome" (dome as in an overhead vault of rock).

Likewise, Elrond's bro was called Elros, which means "elf of the spray."

"Ahem. Elrond, allow me to introduce El Chapo. He has a cave he wants to show you."

A driver's driver.
A Nasruddin story for ye.

One day Nasruddin repaired tiles on the roof of his house.
While Nasruddin was working on the roof, a stranger knocked the door.

What do you want? Nasruddin shouted out.

Come down, replied the stranger So I can tell it.

Nasruddin unwillingly and slowly climbed down the ladder.

Well! replied Nasruddin, what was the important thing?

Could you give a little money to this poor old man? begged the stranger.

Tired Nasruddin started to climb up the ladder and said,

Follow me up to the roof.

When both Nasruddin and beggar were up on the roof, Nasruddin said,

 The answer is no!
