What happens if big snow storms come back in late April and part of May? Late winters, like in 1983, seem to go on and on once the high pressure has broken down over the Central Valley. I still think, wait and see what the weather does during the next two weeks. It still could be snowing to beat the band up there in mid-May. Seen it before!

I'm in Lee Vining - so here's an update. Mono Cone is open so that's a good start. The locals say the Mobil Mart opens on Friday and Tioga Pass opens on Sat.

Plows at Tenaya Lake
Plows have reached Tioga Pass! However, the road isn't ready to be opened yet--we still have to plow parking lots and side roads, and perform a variety of road work.
The photo is from yesterday, as the rotary plows went by Tenaya Lake (which is still frozen). From the YNP Facebook Page.

By May 15 you will be able to ride a road bike from Lee Vining to Crane Flat and never touch snow...The snow is thin, dense and ready to melt away....When the Park service gets the road open....who knows. There is almost nothing to plow now...
