When you read employment headlines etc always realize the authors pick a number to support a side based on political alliance of that new agency or in power party.
Easy to read the real number on line which are quite frankly never as rosy.

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf

Report in fact starts with this:

Household Survey Data
The unemployment rate held at 4.9 percent in July, and the number of unemployed persons was
essentially unchanged at 7.8 million. Both measures have shown little movement, on net, since August
of last year. (See table A-1.)
Among the major worker groups, unemployment rates in July were little changed for adult men (4.6
percent), adult women (4.3 percent), teenagers (15.6 percent), Whites, (4.3 percent), Blacks (8.4
percent), Asians (3.8 percent), and Hispanics (5.4 percent). (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

Tell us again how the moon landings were faked.

Please use lots of gibberish in your explanation, but keep it simple because most of us aren't fluent.

And cite conspiracy websites: those are always persuasive.

Which is dropping too. Do you have a problem with that?

Which is much better than 22-25 percent eight years ago.

Werner and zBrown piqued my curiosity about how the unemployment rate is calculated. A quick Google search took me here:

http://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm

So the labor force is the total of those who have jobs and those who don't but are actively looking for one, and these numbers are determined by monthly polling.

"There are about 60,000 eligible households in the sample for this survey. This translates into approximately 110,000 individuals each month."

So the numbers come from a sample of 0.035% of the population. But somehow they can extrapolate statistics such as an unemployment rate for young black men. Hmm.

60,000 is actually a fairly hefty sample size, assuming the survey is designed well.

yes, especially compared to the political polls being pretty accurate with only 1500 people sampled

I remember during Ivanka's speech at the RNC, she said "a Trump Presidency will turn the economy around".

Unfortunately for me, my brain tends to see nearly everything around me in a mathematical context. Since the US's GDP has been steadily climbing since 2010 or so, in my mind I see a line with a positive slope. So...turning that around... wouldn't that make a line with a negative slope and indicate economic decline? What Ivanka said was not well thought out, but eerily prophetic.

Ivanka might be intelligent, but in the context of Trump's campaign fiasco, she comes across like one of the Dimbo Kashinagin sisters.

Trump has repeatedly said he intends to "turn the economy around" by driving it right into the ground. He says he will impose huge import tariffs on goods coming from China, and that he will deport 11 million "Mexican" workers. Economists worldwide have said that a Trump presidency would result in economic disaster.

To ensure total and complete disaster for the nation, Trump is saying that he will appoint Ivanka to a Cabinet post (what, no Cabinet posts for Melania, Donny, Eric, Tiffany and Barron?)

"She is very popular" is how Trump explains Ivanka's qualifications to be Secretary of State.

The Gov. page I linked specifically makes this comparison. I'm not a statistician, but understanding the unemployment rate seems to require some pretty specific breakdowns of population groups by ethnicity, race, sex and so forth.

For example they put out a number for unemployed black men. Do they sample urban blacks? I think that in this case the real number for young black men out of work (as opposed to "unemployed" as more narrowly defined) is the number which is relevant to any sort of policy decisions.
