If you are in the Valley tomorrow you might have a chance to get the Moon over Half Dome... from the Ahwahnee Meadow between 5:00pm and 5:15pm PST based on my calculations and the position of the Moon tonight.

I might make the trip, the clouds seem to be making a delayed appearance. But even without clouds, the November atmosphere tends to be very moist and that can obscure the Moon rise until it is very high above Half Dome.

Sunset is around 5:00pm PST, so the scene should still be lit.

so I noticed that my prediction was off, the Moon rose in a different position. Comparing predictions to actual observation is what science is about, and it is often humbling to learn that you got it wrong, and getting it wrong is very usual.

Looking back at my calculation I saw that I read "semi-diamter" as "diameter" instead of "radius" and that caused me to incorrectly scale the webcam image. Taking that into account I get the "prediction"

the dashed cross hair is the position at 4:51, which corresponds to my first sighting of the Moon on Half Dome's Southwest shoulder

here is the "prediction" ontop of the image, the agreement is within about 1 lunar diameter, or about 0.542º which is not bad for this work... this might be accounted for by my displacement from the webcam, which was about 20m behind me and North, and up about 5m.

It would have been nice to have had the luck of patchy clouds in the scene and a clear view of the Moon, but it is what it is. If you aren't actually there you won't get that shot, luck or not.

here's a viewers guide...

unfortunately for photography, the Sunset is around 5pm, so these will be scenes with dark images of Half Dome (at best)

my calculation had the Moon's center on the profile at 5:41, this is the 5:42 image, which should be displaced by about 0.243º, the Moon's radius is 0.278º, and the image shows the profile is not quite a radius different...

At 11:39 PST over the Central Valley, the moon will be at its meridian and will be at 99.87% illumination and only 221,539 miles from Earth.

Roughly.

It's a pleasure posting here to this thread, Lynnie.
