Morning folks

Phew my head hurts, I feel like I've just come down stairs after a really good party, but can't remember a thing -- I mean there's a dead Elk in the garden, what's that about.

And why is there a young teenager boy lying face down over the kitchen table with a bunch of flowers sticking out of his white pimply ass?

Jeez this is gonna take some cleaning up....

I need a coffee

Sorry to highlight an error in your usual impeccable logic. Regarding that Kilogram thing, I did say it wasn't original, it's one of those things that flies round the internet between like minded people.

Great party last night tho' - what did happen?

Just thought I'd check in, see how we're doing on Locker's magic number project, bump the number a bit. (Does that make me an inflationary agent?)

As it's Saturday morning and I'm working, I thought I'd throw out a somewhat on topic idea. Which is that those who post to this thread during the day on Saturdays and Sundays are less likely to currently be climbers. They may in the past have been climbers, even the very recent past. Yesterday. They may be climbers tomorrow. But maybe they're not climbers today.

Manfully wielding Occam's Razor, I conclude that these people (myself included) may or may not be climbers. They're sort of like Schrodinger's cat - both alive and dead, at the same time. But they're definitely posters, so that part's ok.

mcKbill - Get off the naughty step, saw your post on the 'Yo Matt' thread -- great picture!

Dropped Matt off in a real class area of Liverpool, he was still unconscious, stark naked and the flowers looked a bit wilted but still sticking out of his ass. I reckon some 'pipe hittin bro's' are workin out on his scrawney little ass right now!

The Elk was a bit more of a problem, ever tried getting an elk carcass in the back of a VW estate!

I'm not climbing because I'm on call this weekend that's why it all kinda twisted off last night. The hotspell just broke in the UK, it's raining right now, god we need it.

You know some games are worth playing for the sheer joy of playing them, it's not winning or losing. But I now have my 'Grand Unified Theorem of Trolldom'. I'll keep that for circa post 660.

Locker mate, it would be great to hear from you.

Following on from a few posts back, perhaps those who are neither climbers nor non-climbers should be described as "unclimbers". Sort of like the undead of Dracula - neither alive nor dead. Or, as an older friend describes himself, unsure whether he's a has been or a never was.

This may have thread extension potential. Where do unclimbers fit into the discussion? Whether or not LEB is the same person as dirtineye, or whatever that was all about, what if posters were unclimbers? What about armchair mountaineers? This is starting to get complicated. Perhaps Locker can provide some guidance on these matters.

DMT:
Here's a classic flight of fancy read for a climber:
"Winter's Tale" by Mark Helpren.

Anyone here read Fata Morgana by William Kotzwinkle? Helprin's imagery in Winter's Tale reminded me of Kotzwinkle's book, which I read a long time ago and liked it so much I sought some other odd books of his (Kotzwinkle's) such as Elephant Bangs Train, Swimmer in the Secret Sea and then finally his novelization of E.T. The Extraterrestrial which had subleties not in the movie but nevertheless marked the end of my Kotzwinkle phase.

In the beginning there was the OP, and it was good , and then there was...WHAT?

...At times this thread expands at an exponential rate. I am sampling load time from various locations in the real world and have determined that it takes a long arse time to load this baby from anywhere: home, work, the internet coffee bar, I must try one of Iowa's many wireless-enabled rest-stops...that's right folks, we got'em, and I drive by a set each time I go to work. I will borrow a wireless enabled notebook from work and give a full report in a week or two(...where will this thread be then?).

In order to conserve energy I've also determined that one has a social responsibility to postup ...that is providing the thread loads successfully. I know some of you are having this problem, but I cannot actually identify with the pain and frustration. You have my sympathies.

Question (a stupit one, but one I've pondered and am not afraid to ask in this drifting context): HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE 'THREAD'?

Background: When you read THREAD on the forum, how does it sound in your head? How do you pronounce it when you say it to others?

I tend to think of it the same way that I pronounce it to others while speaking, "THREED".

johnx01,
I like how you dole-out appropriate punishments...never cruel, never evil, but effective I think. Your use of the nanny-911 punishment, which has been gaining noteriety in the states, is yet another thing you've written that nearly made me spew hot coffee thru my sinuses. Thank you... So, I wanted to quote you and copy/paste your words into the "YoMUtt" threed, but then found that picture on the Nanny's website and thought it would be a more subtle way to say it again. I love the look on that little boy's face...reminds me of some old family pictures of me whining about something now long forgotten.

fattrad,
I agree. You were right about Matthew all along. He may even deserve the nickname you have assigned to him, but he may be worth salvaging should the fellows in London leave anything of him that can speak, remember what day of the week it is, and sadly, know who is President (of the United States). Something LEB might note in his medical chart as 'Oriented X3' I believe.

Okay...I am enjoying this thread very much, but I've decided to take to long posts (not flower-length mind you), but long enough to make it worth the lights dimming in the neighborhood for the 5 minutes it takes to upload/download. Man, the electric meter spins like a 45rpm record whenever I touch this thing. I think the electric company is going to report me to the authorities for the strange increase in power consumption. I'll soon be answering the door and saying, "Honest officer, I'm just posting to this big-arse SuperTaco threed, but I need to see a warrant before you...hey, whadda bustin' in here for...what about the consitution? You want me to sit on what step?"...DOAH!

'Nuf said....

Okay...so, a final question, and this gets at the unclimber thing UPthreed abit, because, well I really identified with that:

BACKGROUND: I've only been to the CLIMBING gym twice. Once to learn how to use the harness and rope and to belay and to fall into the system, and again a week later to proove that I remembered it. They gave me a pretty green belay card, but I have never gone back. Now, since I don't want to climb the gym (and it's an okay place), and since there are few climbers at the local crag, would it be advisable for me to teach myself how to setup a toprope and just go for it provided I can persuade my wife it is safe, as well as fun?

More recent background...The same god that speaks to johnx01 told me,

BILL, TEACH THYSELF TOPROPE ANCHOR BUILDING, BUT ONLY IN THE BOULDERING AREA, AND DO NOT PROGRESS TO THE CLIFFS UNTIL THEE AND THY WIFE HAVE ACHIEVED CONFIDENCE IN YOUR WORK AND KNOW YOUR TECHNIQUE IS GOOD. oH, AND...HELMUTS ARE OPTIONAL.

Should I listen to this God? Are there others who might suggest a different path?

Please advise,

--mcKbill

Lov's you all, and also hoping to see Mr. Locker post-up again soon, when the time is right.

PS: Okay folks let's crank on this threed so we can get to that number that will prompt johnx01 to share his 'Grand Unified Theorem of Trolldom' with us...oh, the anTISapation.

Sadly, our friend LEB has badly hurt her shoulder, and so may not be able to contribute quite so much to this scintillating thread for a few days. Hopefully she will recover soon, and help with the quest.

This raises a related question. LEB freely claims that she isn't a climber, but posts on ST anyway. I think she is a climber. In her heart of hearts she wants to be a climber. She was maybe thinking about giving it a try. Regardless, she now can't climb, at least for a little while. Due, it should be noted, to an injury common amongst climbers. Doesn't that make her an honourary climber or something? She seems much more interested and engaged than many of the posers and wannabes out there.

Some people will climb for ten years and never be climbers, others may never climb at all, yet still be climbers.

LEB announced her injury in the "Dislocated shoulder" thread

Lois, I wish you a speedy recovery. If you go back to work today please take care to avoid the physical work your profession typically demands. Although I barely qualify as a climber, I agree with Anders, you are a climber at heart. By participating in this forum you have learned much of the language, technique, and ethics of climbing. The responses to your many good questions have been very helpful to me personally. I too nominate you as honorary climber. Get well.

Rokjox,

You sound very familiar with the technical workings of websites and forums that reside within them. I did not consider how a thread like this might clobber the ST bandwidth. Would it help if we removed links to pictures in this tread and kept it to just text only?

If you look all the way down in the fine print, you see a message like above. Taking 13 second to generate a page is just nuts. That is time potentially taken from others.

The page, text alone, is about 1.5 megabytes. The pictures contribute another 2Mbytes.

Perhaps it is now being a bit Muttish to continue posting to this thread and even retrieving it.

I love this thread.

Janet is real, haha!

LEB thinks she is real, but actually she exists in a universe of her own creation, where she may actually be real, but in this demention, she could well be a fig newton of someone's imagination...

As for John-boy's question, I was, um, busy, yeah, that's it, this last few days.

Janet, no, I do not think even ST could handle my story about blood, mouths, alcohol, sex, and college. I can't even handle it, after 30+ years. Thank god I was REALLY drunk at the time.

To quote the Buster Of Tar™: Good things come to those who weight™.

Speaking of weight, just loaded this thread on my 22 kbps dial-up,
with images and plug-ins turned off. Total time to load the page:

2 minutes, thirty six seconds.

So all you whiners can STFU!

I will test a little later on a cable connection––I think it's still well under a minute, images and all...

Edit:

I just read that fine print on bottom of page and here's what I got:

That's a tad over 3 minutes, although I timed it accurately at 2:36.
