You're a much better Chinese scholar than I ff, inasmuchas I'd never heard of either until just this minute.

If I'm getting this, 1421 was a year of the Ox.

From China to Oregon,
Just like that!
It's cold there, too,
Better wear a hat!

Inspired by a recent post from neebee on FB.
I visited Bend, Oregon, about 1975, where The North Face's MO dept was attempting to take pictures of certain products. Among these was a 3-man tent called the Dandelion (dandy lyin' inside of it). That was the main shot that was wanted, and we got one dandy one of the tent sitting near the base of a peak called Three-Finger Jack.
I can't recall where, exactly, this peak was in relation to the inn where we all stayed the night before we went up to 3FJ. I had my Courier p/u and my wife, Dolores, and I volunteered to bring along everyone's XC skis. There must have been ten or twelve others, some of them first-time skiers and most of them employed by TNF in accounting and other office work or shipping.

We drove for several miles through logged-over flat terrain on forest service roads and then at last up a road that gained elevation for how far I don't remember...it wasn't too long a drive, thank God, because when we'd unloaded everyone's skis we discovered that our skis were still sitting in the cabin which we occupied, which was rented for us by TNF's MO dept.

I had based Dolores' skis and then mine, as well. I'd forgotten to bring them out to the truck, but the wax kit was there in the truck. What a dumbass! The rest of the crew had mostly FishScale skis of the waxless type, so they all got to truckin' while I jetted back to snatch our skis.

Returning, I looked at my watch and found they had an hour's head start. We skied up the road which was a fairly easy but continuous uhphill pitch, all the way to the end. So reaching the road's end, we followed their tracks into the trees and came out in a wide spot below the base of 3FJ. This may have been the glacier of the same name. I can't recall, look it up on Google Earth.

We had nothing to do, as the tent had been set up and the models were out on their skis with Roland Dare, the photographer. Jim Shirley was busy with them, directing the models and so on.

Bruce Hamilton and his wife Kathy and Dolores and I skied off in another direction and found some slope to climb and made several runs down that, had a lunch and a boo break, and sat talking in the sun until the shadow of the peak made us put on our warm gear and we headed back to the shoot.

Good. The tent was down and packed, the mess cleaned up, and we all set out for the easy, but quick and now icy run back to the cars. Some of the crew, who got cold earlier, had taken off down the road before this. We caught up with them easily and found one of them had somehow fallen and his ski shot off into the woods. We never found it. I even came back the next morning and looked around, but to no avail.

Rich Little, the representative for TNF, who lived in or near Bend, was also a ski instructor at the downhill area on the road over the mountains to Eugene. It was called Hoodoo. Whoever wanted to was invited to go up to the ski area on Sunday at no charge, courtesy of the ski school, to try GLM skis and ride the lifts for free. I was not very sanguine about how I was gonna like alpine, and I was right...I much preferred my skinny skis.

Here are some postcards from the area.

Here's a place I'd like to have visited.

Taken verbatim from Fritz's thread, titled
OT! Killed for saying "Excuse me, No smoking here, Thanks."

Apparently Randisi, a guy who no longer lives in the USA, wants that Fritz delete that thread. I don't get involved in gun debates, but I fell off the wagon and did it anyway. I shouldn't like to see my effort wasted to please Randisi.

It's probably the only thing I'll ever write on the subject, though I have strong feelings on it. It's just that trying to influence gun nuts on an internet forum is like shouting into a deep black cave. You only wake the bats!

Do you honestly think that by removing guns from the hands of a hundred-million law-abiding, responsible citizens you are going to usher in your utopia in which the killing stops?

They've managed to do this in the rest of the civilized world.

Are we any less able to face the fact that THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD?

Populations which are smaller and in a frontier situation are armed for the sake of survival. Not so much protection from aggressive or unbalanced members of society, but so they can feed the family.

It's when we fear the person standing next to us that these things happen...at a bar rail, like in the westerns, which are inflated with fear and loathing of "bad guys" from the get-go, simply because of Hollywood's need (passe, now) to keep cranking out death at a weekly rate to keep up with entertainment demands. Stop for a mo to think that everything you see on the screen could not possibly have taken place--there weren't that many "bad guys" and they didn't go around putting high-speed holes in other people all the time, like it's depicted in the western movies, so do WE need similarly to have firearms to carry as well?

I say "Hell, no!"

The gun lobby has been hanging on to that holy icon of a right to bear arms and it's consequences are becoming SO APPARENT OF LATE that it's time to legislate BIG-TIME on these mis-guided groups (NRA for starters) and backwoods whackos (Fritz's neighbors) and TAKE THEIR GUNS AWAY.

Personally, it wouldn't bother me to hear that several had been killed or wounded in bringing the non-compliers to heel. It requires stern leadership in the right places and we don't have that at present but there's hope. Always hope.

Which would you rather hear about? Innocent kids dying, friendly waitresses dying, families killed by a dad gone berserk, or a postally-mad and vengeful former employee wiping out the office he no longer works in, or a battle out in the boonies that started out as an honest attempt at confiscating weapons and ammo for the good of all, or that the day's news only tells of non-firearms-related stories because there are none to report?

We are what we have been made by watching too much TV and being too liberal with firearms violations and too namby-pamby to get the firearms off the street once and for all, not to mention the number and types of them allowed to be in a person's possession, locked in a gun safe or not.

Some people, I swear, they likely go home at night and jack off their shotguns. Something is not right up there. Nobody NEEDS a personal home arsenal and thousands of rounds to protect their household...that "local war" shtuff only happens in thriller novels and on the screens, big or small.

It's too bad toes have to be stepped on and feelings hurt to make this happen, but people who labor under antiquated ideas about a "right" whose need to exist ceased generations ago are just dead RONG!

"Yeah, and next week they'll be back for your rack of pitons! What then?"

"Well, it's the law, sir."

That stupid, stupid saying that only outlaws will have guns is a cutesy play on words that doesn't mean jack. So stop playing around with the gun lobby and get somebody in office that will at least TRY to do something about these ridiculously powerful gun lobbies, including the citizens' rights defenders, the gun manufacturers, and the black market arms dealers.

"What this country needs" is a rational approach to the problem and fearless determination to get the job done. It's in the public's interest that we won't have to keep reading about incidents like this sad one and other horrifying incidents like school shootings.

If it takes a dozen Ruby Ridge incidents or similar events, so be it, the jerks asked for it. The USA is the last bastion of fully-armed private citizens. We don't need to hold on to that distinction, and it's not because I want the rest of the world to say, "Hey, these Americans finally got the message." It's because I'd like to visit a restaurant and not be caught in the crossfire!

Interesting trivia question:

Was the Marlboro Man armed?

He had deadly cigarettes, and presumably a dangerous Zippo or Bic, sure. But did he sport a six-gun or two? With a concealed carry in his boot? And a large knife on his belt? And a carbine strapped to his hoss?

"Pardon me, sir. You'll have to go outside to smoke that. Ten feet away from the door."

That trip up to Bend from Reno on 395 was an eye-opener. It's so wide open and desolate up that way. Places like Silver Lake, Termo, Likely, and the endless forests in Central Oregon, these are places I'd never "likely" have visited except for the largesse of TNF. It was a good trip, a memorable one, for sure.

My best birthday wishes for the young'un!

Takin' them out for pizza? It's Sunday.

Good thoughts on a Sunday, DMT.

Now go out and go climb, if it's in your cards, OK?

I'd sure like to get out somewhere and shoot some autumn color but have been suffering from breathing trouble this weekend. It's been hell.

At least I got some sleep last night, this early morning...

There are no Ugly Americans on this side of our borders, anyway.

Nope. Nobody's answering phone calls and Skip's cars are both down, one with tire problems, one with a bad water pump.

Michel-Jon's working (son #1).

Don't know about Scottie, who I've called three times, no answer and no call-back.

No response from Vern over in North Fork.

Flip Flop probably won't be able to help, either, I'm thinkin'. Pretty desperate here.

That's a part of the plan pizza and a sunday on a sunny Warm (for late Nov.) Sunday.

DMT, you're teasing me, I can't make it out? Where along the Hudson is that ?
While I am wondering at the bundled up & brr-ing, LS ?
(is it? & it is almost 50 degrees here, & sunny enough to climb.)
I am sure to get out at least for a touch of the Sugar Hollow, where most of my pics are from.
I'll be driving by before and after ice cream Sunday's . Are you track down able?
Do you want to evaluate my rock or mental balance, in person?
Probably a scary thought. . . Anyway Not that it matters, Danbury Ct is off to the side of the more popular climbing zones. Central to all and not to exposed, with good sun is the Power Linez ( that 'z' is their's not mine )

You've got me in "a perfect tizzy," Dingus, about the ID of the gent whose sitting statue appears above. I've not been able to track it down using GI image search nor another method. I figured that it's in Central Park, but it is not listed/shown. I could be way off the mark as there are at least a dozen parks or more where it could be erected/placed.

Here are two that I found which I like the best.
Central Park.

High Line Park.

NYC is all about the commerce and the money, right? I mean typically, you don't think of financial centers except to begin with, there always is NYC.

So here's this one in Central Park, depicting Commerce.
The next thing to a postcard.
And here is a surprise from Amsterdam, NL, placed in the Annet Gelink Gallery there. It's called "You ruin everything (The Economy of Zeros)."

Oh, I don't know. I am not any more advanced in Chinese astrology than reading the year of my Chinese Astrology sign at a Chinese restaurant. I know some history, but not any more astrology.

Sounds as though it was a good year, though. :)
