Jason Kehl, 27, first set eyes on the Rumney, New Hampshire, testpiece The Fly three years ago, and became fixated by it. The 25-foot line is New Hampshire's hardest--5.14d or V14--with a tricky exit crux at 20 feet. On November 7, the highball specialist consummated his dark desire by sending The Fly ropeless, for its fifth ascent. Battling a month of poor conditions, Kehl spent 10 days toprope-soloing the line--mainly in the dark by headlamp--prior to bouldering it out. "The wall has crazy sparkles all over it in the light of the headlamp," says Kehl. "It's interesting being up there at night alone ... it gives you a lot to think about."
With pads and spotters in place, Kehl took five 20-foot falls onto the climb's uneven landing zone, then "ripped it" on his second day of ropeless effort. (He had flubbed the crux, opening move roughly 20 times that day.) "Bouldering The Fly was this crazy dream I had," says Kehl. "I don't think I would've been happy with less.

cool thread..... before my time. where did all these hellraisers go? Yeah well, I like slacklinein', sport climbing, trad climbing, but bouldering sucks. I hate long approaches in the heat, hauling a heavy sack.... I wonder sometimes if I'm sane at all. And then there's all those A.4 sickos up on the heart ledges... what's up with that. Some dude had an old seat belt on for God's sake. Please tell me it wasn't his harness.

Argh, the one day I actually wear mascara to work and I come across this thread. I just came back from the bathroom and looked in the mirror and I looked like a big eyed racoon from all the tears I shed laughing my ASS OFF on this thread. Kudos to all participants....hilarious.

Holy crap....this thing is still goin'? I haven't logged in here in MONTHS!!..and I can't even remember when I started the Donny thing.....I suppose I could just scroll up, but I'm too lazy for that. Well...that and I'm finally and gainfully employed.

Now try planting yer footsies on a 2 inch branch 180 feet up a red gum eucalytpus tree while grabbing onto a fresh koala for dinner - now that's CLIMBING.
Koala - if they weren't meant to be eaten - why did God make them so slow?

Hemmingway once said "There are three true sports, motor racing, bullfighting and mountain climbing, all others are games" (probably not a exact quote).
I say we change the names. Since in saying mountian climbing he probably means crack climbing I say we now call "Trad climbing" "Sport climbing" and "Sport climbing" "Game climbing".
I have a friend that says if you are aid climbing you are not climbing (just like you are not climbing when you grab holds on a rock face and clip into artificial gear). It's really just the stupidest stance I've ever heard.

what a bunch of macho bullsh#t.
climbing is climbing, be it sport, trad, freesolo, bouldering or what ever. these deuschbags that think they have bigger balls because they only trad climb make me laugh.
it's a typical peabrain attitude to think that what you do is so much more adventerous and tough and ballsy than what others choose to do. the fact is, the people that think thier way is the only way live in a world one tenth the size of mine with narrow mind(s) and fantasy bravado.
i mostly climb trad but i climb whatever i want, whenever i want. i climb a lot, but i don't climb with whiny fools.

My experience has been that people who say sport climbing sucks
can't climb their way out of a paper bag. They can barely go from one bolt to the next so they just declare it stupid.
Go to Europe(Verdon, etc) and try some of their "sport climbs". You'll be pissing your pants between bolts there so far apart.
Climbing is climbing!
Just shut up and enjoy what you like
