Scientology is hard for many people in the Western World to grasp because it is more like an Eastern Religion.
In the Americas and Europe you grow up with one big God and worship worship worship. The reason to do that is so you don't burn in hell when you die (so they say).
In Eastern religions, that haven't been twisted into Western style dogma, you have the individual searching for enlightenment; Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Confucius, and some bits of Hinduism. Scientology is more like that, yet completely different in it's path to enlightenment.
As a young man I rejected monothesitic dogma and found metaphysics. I wanted to know more about creating reality and past lives and immortality. Lots of people talkin' but nobody with any way to get there. After actively searching I found Scientology and there it was. Everything I wanted was all laid out I just had climb up that ladder (or cross the Bridge as we call it on the inside).
Pretty much all the crap said about Scientology is exactly opposite.
What would happen if something really good came along?
Don't you think it would piss off a lot of people who had a vested interest in keeping things the way they are.
If want to know about Scientology, you need to get it direct from Hubbard through a book, or a video or class. We don't interpret his work. We like to get it directly.
People who "investigate" it are full of crap. They think they see an easy way to make a buck.

I'm not trying to make a buck. Scientology is, on the other hand.
I don't buy it.
Knowledge should be free to anyone who asks, especially spiritual knowledge, should not be kept secret.
Scientology is a secret society. Secret knowledge is corrupt knowledge. Secrets are kept in order to exercise control over (the minds and finances and labor) of other people.
It is a cult. If you quit you must sever all ties to any family still "bought" in to the church.
Effing, wake up and think for your self.
(Jeez, and I thought Mormonism was crazy)

I heard the interview with the author on NPR yesterday and he sounded very honorable. He made it sound as though while The Church's lawyers have made lots of threatening noises they haven't actually filed anything against him, yet. That speaks volumes as to the veracity of the book.

Scientology may be no more irrational than any other religion. That still doesn't mean its adherents aren't completely nuts.

Everything you need to know about scientology can be distilled down to a single phrase and concept introduced in fourth-grade texts in their grade schools: "senior knowledge".
Beyond that there is really no need to know anything else about them.

Years and I mean years ago, I tried to choke through the book "dianetics" that i got through the mail (way, way pre internet). Every week in the mail came crap about buying some sort of "meter" and it was EXPENSIVE. I forget what use they were supposed to achieve, but I do remember price tags -300 - 2500 smackers - utter nonsense in my military day pay. After 2 or 3 chapters,I knew it was bullsh#t. I cannot believe anything about scientology to this day. My rant --over !!

Two hour documentary on Scientology titled "Going Clear" is debuting on HBO March 29. I'm sure the church is none too pleased by it.
Here's an interesting interview with one of the collaborators for this documentary:

Largo used the term "going clear"or getting clear, in the most recent post to What is mind; here :- Mar 12, 2015 - 10:06pm PT, post #4824
Tvash, you come up with some remarkable claims. Who married "spiritualism" with a non-local watcher? I have no idea even what spiritualism is? Is there a spirit involved? Who's spirit? Does it speak "the English?" What does it tell you?
What's more, memory is required for for the mind to register things and events and to formulate a history that our discursive minds can reflect on as say, "This is 'my' experience. This is happening to 'me.'"
What do you suspect happens when - as PSP has been pointing out - you let go of "you," and reflecting on the past, and even abandon experience of all things and stuff and thoughts and perspectives? You are insisting that the mind simply MUST work this way and only this way, according to your absolutes - in this case, "all" and "must" betrays your hand.
The mudra, a certain way of holding your hands in your lap that has been around since about 200 BC, is a sure way to shift your attention from being fused to memory, and to start getting clear.

lovegasoline, this goes for any and IMHO, all the 'churches'. . .

This sort of behaviour is the product of Delusion/Confusion, Greed, Aversion/Hatred. The sanction for such behaviour reflects very poorly on the institution and it's values. That isn't to say that individuals cannot derive spiritual benefits from Scientology, and the light can shine through even the dirtiest glass.
But one needs to be extremely careful when associating with psychopaths and morally defective individuals. The difficulty is that it may not always be apparent who is who. Psychopaths can be charming, intelligent, and beautiful. People risk being turned into programmed puppets, sexually or financially abused, they can lose their jobs, family, or sanity, and risk disillusionment from pursuing any spiritual quest.
