Do you mean tickling? As in tickling trout?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trout_tickling
A fine and ancient art, that can also be used on other fish. Not that I've ever tried it. Though I used to trout fish. But the name, and idea, tickled my fancy. :-)
Edit: The wikipedia article refers to noodling as a regional variant of tickling, for catfish rather than trout.

FORGOT to SAY...WHEN I READ your whale rendering ..Missionary post I really about died laughing. Son visiting from Belgium made me read the whole thing to find out why I was dying laughing.!!!!
Then we were both rolling on the floor.
Prefer to think the huge blank space was for a picture that didn't make it. Not accepting the L word. Noodling, is that a "real" word and definition or is that "fish" talk.
To clean up my act also, I didn't live with them, just spent a couple of days there.
I did catch a yummy salmon. Truth, I did not thread my hook. Truth, I did pull it in myself.
Truth, the walrus are thousands of pounds of SMELLY lard, but incredibly graceful in the H2O.............and now we are back to Nemo again.

I'd rather fish with a CIL lure than noodle for catfish/turtles/snakes/sea monsters, judging from the description.
As it's Saturday night, perhaps we should rather be discussing canoodling? Or will that cause conniptions?

I'm thinking that the tubesock thing started with Jim Collins in Boulder. In 1978 he worked Genesis (really early 5.12+) relentlessly and was regularly featured in Climbing wearing tube socks.
You can just see them here:

nah, it wasn't just ericson with those lame socks, everybody wore tube socks back then 'cause that's what was available. check out any photos of dudes in shorts in the 70's, they're all wearing f*#king tube socks, they were as ubiquitous as corduroy pants and wallabes, i maen i'm pretty sure largo was wearing tubes socks in some of the photos form "pumping sandstone" and "pumping granite."
oh, the horror.

Yeah Bob's got it, it was what everyone wore back then. Look at the shots I posted, everyone had them. No one wears socks with climbing shoes now, back then you HAD to, try on a pair of EB's or any shoe from that era, hard, stiff and tight. When I got my first pair of Fires I switched to no socks and the smell factor went out the roof. Anyone still got tubers? Maybe we should start wearing sani's from baseball. Ya know the socks worn under yer stirrups. Those come in all the wild colors too. When I can get a scanner I'll put up this shot of a guy I used to climb with named Kirin(sp) he wore these funky "socks" from like ballet, these suckers went up to his knees. Looking through some old slides yesterday I came across it....as well as some other classics. Found the Rakers hat rack shot, some great Largo shots belaying one handed, Badyrka with long hair and tube socks, Randy and Maria handing out donuts at the bouldering contest. I NEED a slide scanner!
A great thread Lynnie....again a BIG thanks for starting it.
Peace

Hey, sorry guys I went a little off last night. Happens when I miss the big D an extra lot. Will show more restraint in the future.

Tube socks were the '70s and early 1980's lycra. They were bound to go higher and higher until you just wore them as pants.
Great shots and what a trip down memory lane, thanks. Too bad I missed Woodson and SoCal from mid 1980 to 1984. I missed some good contests. My first was Magnolia Boulders in 1979. Although as a result I did see Mt. St. Helens blow from the Columbia Gorge after a day of climbing on Beacon Rock, on May 18th, 1980.
Something about the '70s and '80s that I miss dearly --- the innocence and we were all fringe back then. Now climbing is soooo mainstream. There are benefits for sure now, but those times were truly magical and unforgetable.
Someone (maybe all of us) needs to think about another Woodson Shin-dig for the early spring of 2009. The ST 2007 Woodson Shin-dig was a blast.
