My park service amigo says the pass will be open in less than 2 weeks. I doubt there is any road damage--- the stretch to the park boundary from the east is flawless, and remember that autos were crossing it in january.
Very, very excited.

I climbed with a guy this past week who works in the Meadows. He told me he was hearing early to mid May projections via his connections. They told him to gear up for an earlier-than-usual start to the work season there.

More rumors and vile slander:
Asked the checker at Mono Market last Saturday April 14, and he also estimated end of April opening. He said 120 was all cleared except a huge boulder on the road before the big curve below Ellery Lake, which will take explosives to clear.
Sounds like a job for Piton Ron... ;-)
BTW, does anyone know the rules about 120 bike access before the gates open? When will the cache box at Tuolumne campground need to be cleared?

Wait, so Tuolumne is going to be open before finals is over? This sounds bad for my grades.

I read 120 has been kept clear up to the pass from the eastside since Jan. Saw the Park service transporting a blower up 140 this past Mon. 4/16. Anyone interested in wildflowers and pure beauty should know the hike from the Hite cove trailhead is spectacular right now. Also the ride up Foresta road via bike is also incredible with amazing cascades, waterfalls as well as wildflowers.

Here are the factors that affect Tioga Rd. opening from the NPS site:
Once plowing of the Tioga Road is completed, additional work must be completed before the road can safely be opened.
Factors affecting plowing operations:
* Avalanche zones (26 potential areas). The Olmsted Point avalanche zone requires a lot of work, including application of charcoal over the snow to help with melting and blasting the snow slab to make it safer for personnel.
* Heavy snow pack slows the whole operation.
* Trees that have fallen across the road and been buried in the snow. These can cause substantial damage to the equipment and result in a stop to all operations until they're cleared.
*Rock slides buried by the snow. These can cause substantial damage to the equipment and result in a stop to all operations.
* Snow storms during the opening require a stop to Tioga Road operations and in order to plow and sand the park roads.
* Road repairs and ditching and brushing operations once snow has melted back enough.
From this page which has updates and other info:
http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm
Check out the video at the bottom of that page (which I think has been posted here before) showing some of the good folks who clear the road in action.
I'm going aggressive this year: May 5.

This was a few bends before Crane Flat on Friday afternoon:
It was just about entirely melted away when I drove back through on Sunday.
Edit: a few more of the Valley this weekend
I could just barely make out Herson and his daughter hoofing it up the Slabs approach for a morning run at the Reg:
