Bobby I don't know you personally. I know of you from research on climbing and mountaineering and then from the news of your accident.
I have a poem I wanted to contribute which I hope you will accept as a tribute to you and people like you who have lived their lives with passion, courage and curiosity to explore and to have a positive impact on the world. The world needs others like you and I know you'll pull through this because you have too much yet to contribute to the world.
My prayers go out to you and your family.
~a fellow "explorer" from NE
Precipice
The dawn of a new day
Enlightens the burden I share
With only my soul
But even that is not there
In its place only a void – dull and cool
Like the amber, marble peak that I see when I stare
At the dead, dull pond in the depth of my fear.
Ocean eyes gaze
Into an azure sky
On an eagle in flight,
Gathering momentum for its last fateful leap
To hurdle the summit of a neighboring peak
It catches my eye in a withering stare
When a reflection of light - shimmering, laughing at me
Lights up my vision - a crystalline jamboree
Focus, Patience, Energy
I depend on all three
I am walking the tightrope of life you see
Vital, intoxicating, frightening and free
I blink at the drop of painful brilliance
Midnight returns for an eternal instance
Purple velvet backdrop, firefly lights
Spiraling galaxy – at its center an orb
The same as I saw in the eye of the eagle
The galaxy spirals or is it me who is spinning
The light from the stars seem to fuse into white
A blanket of cloud, cloaking the night
I lose my hold, my grip and my faith
Shuddering, Falling
Falling
Falling
At peace in my mind as I begin my dream
A promise of warmth and security
That must be ignored as long as I strain
Upon myself I depend when I’m ragged and worn
What it’s like to hang from only an arm
And scrape and claw and scratch and groan
And cling to the Precipice – it is my home.

Hi Bobby,
My prayers and thoughts are with you daily, as they are with your family. The last time I saw you in Cody was March 7, the due date of my baby. You were at Whole Foods Trading Co. and you were (as always) gracious and kind. I had a little girl 2 days later (Noelle).
I think back on the many years I have known you, and you have always been such a humble, joyous, and capable person. I am praying that you pull through this and heal, so you can continue to be an example of courage for all of us.
Love and many prayers,
Joani (Joanie Miller) Graham

Hey Bob-Meister,
The latest news is that you are still not completely back with us, but getting really close. So, I started thinking about things that are going on that may be an extra incentive (if you EVER needed one) for you to come back to us. Here goes, in no particular order:
first the weather, I don't know what's going on, but the weather is gorgeous, sunny and hot, but not muggy, which is unheard of for DC. Perfect outdoors weather. Not sure what it's like in Cody but maybe someone from there will fill us in, or I will check on some website for you.
Second: watermelons! they have now arrived in full force, and bud, they are a force to be reckoned with, sweet and watery, you can't eat one without a change of clothes, a real delight! I do have a pet peeve, though, the last one I bought was seedless. Now what, tell me, is the point of eating watermelon if you don't get to spit out the seeds??? I swear, they have pushed this whole GMO thing way too far ...
the music: there are some seriously cool songs that have come out recently and I am right now burning you a CD of the songs that I have listened to while I think of you: totally kick-ass. My favorite of the moment: If you read my mind, by The Killers (the irony of that one just hit me as I was writing this ...)
on the movie front: A mighty heart, about Daniel Pearl and Pakistan (and I know how much you like Pakistan) and Knocked up, which I haven't seen yet but is widely described as sophomoric humour. Hum, sophomoric humour, that sounds like you, doesn't it???
These are the reasons I can come up with off the top of my head but others may want to pitch in on that one. And most importantly, bud, we really miss you, and we can't wait for you to come back to us. Whenever you feel like it, come on back and we'll be waiting for you.
As always, hug everyone for me,
Charlotte

Dear Bobby, Anne, Jim, and everyone else in Cape Town, Cody, and everywhere! Dave and I think are thinking of you, praying for you, and sending you good vibes. Bobby- You don't know us, but your adventures and accomplishments have always inspired us. We just got back from a great day hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, and the sunset over the front range is absolutely gorgeous right now. We read about Bobby's tragic "accident" in the Cody paper last week (the paper gets to us about a week late, then it usually sits in the stack of mail for a few days), and have just now gone to this supertopo website. We're glad to read the recent posts about Bobby's improvement! Like someone else said, "Go, Bobby, go!" Love, Timi and Dave Davenport

Bobby, Summertime in Montana is going well. The girls 6 and 8 have their own horses and are riding almost every day. I think of you often and know you are going to pull through on this one. It is not your time. Keep strong and get the heck out and back to the mountains. Here is a poem I believe I took from Outward Bounds.
Men go back to the mountains as they go back to sailing ships at sea. Because in the mountains and out on the sea, they must facce up as did men of another age, to the challenge of nature. Modern man lives a highly synthetic kind of existence. He specializes in this and that. Rarely does he test all his powers of finding himself whole. But in the hills and on the water, the character of a man comes out.
Bobby, you have the character, you are "DA MAN", you are what this poem is about. Keep up the fight and show us all "THAT A CODY BOY WILL SURVIVE".
Love, Brooks, Kenzie, and Lexi

Faith,
This email is purely for your enjoyment, although I hope you will read it to Bobby and everyone there. Depending on the story, you can decide how much you want to explain.
I apologize to everyone reading the forum- I find it annoying to read emails such as this, but wanted to keep it quick and simple without revealing much of the details.
So, off we go!
-"I'm a bear!" Bobby chasing a screaming Lance through the fire. I believe Lance started getting seriously worried when the chainsaw came out. Right, Lance?
-"You're not my parent"- same night.
-"olly, olly, oxen free"
-Pink Harlem, care of Jan Ackerman
-"Then what's my name?" -"Uhhhhh, Kevin?"
-Stupid pet tricks- the lady who's dog chased the vacuum. Who's dog doesn't chase the vacuum? Cripe.
-Mr. White's video assignment: Bobby was a Neanderthal and the Eagle narrated. (We do have it and we will watch it)
-SOUL TRAIN- yeah, Meg.
-Did we ride home in a police car from Jay Hayes's house in Laramie one night? Didn't you and Jay sit on his front steps munching on a bag of chips while I was being interrogated?
-La Comida
-The Male Room
-Lester Lanin
-Ulee's Gold
-Evan at Redneck Olympics (because I don't want to leave you with that image in your head. . .)
-Merrill in a pink thong (I certainly can't leave you with that image in your head. . .)
-Hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm. Hm, hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm. (Count 'em. They're all there.)
Thank you for calling. I ache to be with you. Obviously, the prayers go out more than daily.

Bob, Ann, Faith and everybody at Bobby's bedside:
I just returned from the Boone and Crockett Club's meetings in Fort Worth, and the blessing before each meal focused on our hopes for Bobby's total recovery. There was a tremendous outpouring of hope and concern, and each and every one of us continues to have Bobby in our thoughts and prayers.

Just wanted to say hi. Took my kids rock climbing in Vedauwoo this weekend. They are 7 and 6, so it was pretty easy going, but I can tell they are getting the bug. They love it. We made it to the top of our little rock pile and the view took our breathe away. My daughter said to me, "Oh Mom, can you believe how beautiful it is?" and my son said, "Ah yeah, it's great," and was on his way to look for other rocks to conquer. Ha Ha Boys! But with the words of my daughter, the energy of my son, and the scene before me, I whispered a prayer to the wind. You are loved, Bobby.

Bobby and Family -
Just writing to say hello and like all the rest here, grinning to think of fun times in the past and sending all good thoughts towards Capetown for you to rest comfortably and recover well.
Perhaps the last time I saw you in Sinks Canyon you wondered what I was still doing with myself in Wyoming. You were right, I imagine. Have since moved to New York and now made it as far as Liberia. So stick a pin in Monrovia to mark the places where we're rooting you on. Breathe easy and I'll see you back in sunny, wonderful Wyoming or somewhere further afield someday in the future when our paths cross again.
all best wishes

I get my Cody paper a week late and it usually takes me a few days to get to it, so I just learned of Bobby's ordeal. I ran into him on the 4th of July, I believe it was the year before last, and he talked very humbly, yet excitedly about his accomplishments. I've known Bobby since grade school and have been extremely impressed by the amazing things he's done. I've seen his photography and it's amazing. I've read about his recognition by National Geographic and was incredibly impressed (and jealous, as working for Nat'l Geo. is every wildlife biologists dream!). It's awesome to see that a quiet boy from little ole Cody Wyoming can go out in the world and achieve so much in such a short time. I admire Bobby and my thoughts are with him and his family during these trying times and I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Get well soon, Bobby! You have a lot of people pulling for you!
Sincerely,
Katrina Krause

Hi Faith and Bobby
I've spent a lot of time with Bobby in some strange places around the world and I know how strong and tenacious he is, so I won't be surprised if he sits upright today and asks for his climbing shoes.
Bobby has always been fun to hang around; something entertaining was sure to happen. As athletic as he is, Bobby often seemed a bit clumsy at the act of walking. I don’t know if it is his Wyoming swagger, or just a sign that he is more comfortable with more extreme physical endeavors. For example, Bobby and I (along with Todd Skinner, Paul Piana, Peter Mallamo, Andy deKlerk, Ed February, and Bill Hatcher) were in Mali, West Africa, climbing on the Hand of Fatima. We had reached a ledge about 1200 feet up and were trying to find places on the rocky ledge to settle in for a sleep. I had found one spot right on the lip of the ledge and was stacking some rocks along the edge to keep me from rolling off in the middle of the night. Model came clomping over towards me in his lumbering gait, lost his balance on loose rocks, and wobbled over towards the precipice. Of course none of us were tied in at this point, so one bad slip would mean a 1200 foot ride to the desert below. Bobby corrected himself as I grabbed his arm and the back of his jacket, and pulled him to the ground. I was freaked, but Bobby just laughed and said “Just kidding!” Unfazed, he got up and wobbled further along the ledge in search of a resting place.
That’s how I always picture Model, wobbling along that ledge. He is like those toys, the Weebles and their theme song:
“Weebles Wobble, but they don’t fall down”
Bobby is our Weeble, he wobbles plenty but he won’t fall down, especially now. Keep on wobbling little buddy, I’ll be there to grab your arm anytime you need me to.
Stay strong.

Hi, Faith, Austine, Bob, Mona, Ann, Jim and Joe. We just wanted to continue to let you know that we are praying for each of you, and especially for Bobby's recovery. Our 3 kiddos are certain to include Bobby in their daily prayers, too. He is also being prayed for by our church and our friends from South Africa(living in Cody.) Bobby has experienced more than his share of heartache and loss, and has always pulled through. I know that he will this time, too. It is awesome that you are all able to be there at his side. I am sure that he knows you are there!
With love and prayer,
Katy(Tilden) and Joe Asay
