Lol, fun thread. I remember in the 90s in NYC the lead singer from a not-quite-truly-famous but somewhat successful female punk band yelled out approval during a bad show of my band, and called us "punk rock" ..I disagreed at the time with the label but in retrospect I guess we were kinda punk after all...just, well, not that 3/4time-1-minute-song sorta punk that was big in NYC at the time...besides it was a compliment anyway... just saw the movie CBGBs, the library here in SLC has a copy. Fun movie! Didn't know Talking Heads got their start there.

The Dead Kennedys, Millions of Dead Cops, Crucif*#ks (whose drummer went on to Sonic Youth fame)...Lawrence KS 1984. I can still make my ears ring just thinking about that show.
Standing next to William S Burroughs and Jello Biafra at a Husker Du show another cool memory.
Just saw Alejandro Escovedo do an impromptu show in Kansas City last week. He mentioned his first band The Nuns opening up for the Sex Pistols last show (in SF), then launched in to some pretty sloppy punk covers, priceless! Were those really that long ago? Sh#t,..

Does anyone down in San Diego remember the shet band- Men of Clay, circa 81 or 82? Or, how about the hated- Battalion of saints?
Did you catch DK at King's Road in 82?
The UK Subs and The Cramps were favorites, live, for sure.

Back when bands used to face a wall of phlegm. Strummer got a case of hepatitis from someone gobbing in his mouth. No one could figure out Strummer's lyrics, so people used to make up their own version - Joe said later that they were frequently better than what he was singing.

Lessee, the San Diego bands I best remember from the early 80's were DFX2, The Beat Farmers, The Rick Elias Band, Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper, The Penetrators, The Palladins, basically groups that played at the Spirit Club, The Texas Tea House, The Baccahanal, The Skeleton Club. Along with the LA bands, it was a good time for live music in SoCal!
