FRITZ! So nice to see those Italy photos.
SUSAN! I missed this, so sorry to hear you are on crutches and vicodin.
SPIDER! I'm in town and will definitely be going to the Kris slide show Tuesday, hope to see you there.
We went to the LA County Fair on Thursday and sampled a half dozen wines from the gold metal winners.
Liked the Davis Bynum Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley
the Burbank Ranch Syrah from Paso Robles
and the Jeff Runquist Barbera from Amador County

Holy crap, Phyl - what a lineup! Amador County Barbera is arguably my all time fave.
Thanks for the pics, Fritz!

Yes, Pete, I only ever did one wine tasting trip to Amador and was impressed with the Italian varietals they made. We stopped at one place to taste (can't remember which one) and picked up one bottle of a recommended Barbera without tasting. After I opened it a year later, it was like crack, I wanted to buy a case, but it was sold out at the vineyard and I could never find it anywhere else.

That is a really cool bottle there TMJesse. 1947. Just after the end of the "Second War to End All Wars". It is obviously Cyrillic, Thus Soviet Russia, and it is Madeira, a port-like wine made in various places in the European -Atlantic region. As with many of these wines, the labeling is usually specific to whoever is distributing the wine. Little is shown as of who made it or who will drink it. I would think that it was probably a really good wine or the Russians wouldn't have bothered. Madeiras hold up really well if stored right. The best Madeiras have to travel around the world on ships, in barrels, to acquire the nuances of a fine vintage.

Mouse! re your question a couple Fried-Dazes back: Where's Fritz when ya need him?
My apologies. It appears I haven't been getting drunk on Friday nights: talking about my consumption, mentioning why I'm stuck at home for the weekend, and bitching about something.
On the other hand----I have had some fun on the last few Friday nights.
Arco---the "we cheated death in the Brenta Dolomites & it's Angie's birthday" party may have been the most fun.
We repeatedly noted a high-altitude effect on our wine. It evaporated quickly from the bottles, while those nearby were apparently intoxicated by the alcohol in the air.
I have been assured that the British conqueror of The Matterhorn, Edward Whymper also noted the same effect, but it was lessened among his guides during bivouacs, when Whymper slept on the remaining Brandy bottles.
Dancing to upbeat Italian birthday songs.
and then we went into a local tavern on the way to our hotel----and the photos ceased.

Greetings from Curry Village! I sooooooo wanted to post last Friday from high on El Cap, but no cell service. Because it was my 600th night on theside of El Cap, not counting base or summit bivis.
Bad to the Bone was my 51st different El Cap route.Eleven nights on the wall, two of storm.
Went free climbing today at Arch Rock. Ouch, I'm not very good. But several beers were involved, and alovely bottle of Aussie Cab from Gross Out.
Anita nother beer.
And Susan, I have defended your Blue Moons and they are ready for you.

Well! That's a deep subject!
I'm enjoying watching college football, with USU (Utah State) giving a good old-fashion Rocky Mountain ass-whipping to 18th ranked Bringemyoung (BYU) on ESPN.
Makes me want to sin by drinking!
