OK! i'm back to posting by the PTPP book. Heidi & I are working our way through a bottle of Predator Zin & a bottle of Rodney Strong Cab. Gud wine for us Idaho folks.
We got rained out of the Sawtooths at 9:00 AM this morning, actually the Stanley motel we retreated to, after getting rained out of our camp two days ago.
Views from Stanley this morning as the storm came in.
Yesterday was threatening all day, but we had a good hike up high until we pussied out due to a little sprinkle and threatening clouds.
I did photograph & name some land features.
RottingJohnny Peak.
and the Big Black Dykes.
Yeah! Like I'm going to say anything about that photo of Anita!

Hey, Fritz, is the Waldorf Hysteria still in Stanley? There really was one
there BITD, right in the middle of town. Prolly something far more prosaic
there now. I think I had a pic of it at one time.

Reilly? Re your question?
Hey, Fritz, is the Waldorf Hysteria still in Stanley?
My direct knowledge of Stanley only goes back to the early 1960's, although my mother's most adventurous sister lived on a "starvation-ranch" up-river from Stanley in the late 1930's. She had some great adventure & adversity stories.
I think what you are referring to was: Reno hotel king Bill Harrah's Mountain Village resort, which included a decent motel, eatery, grocery store, & service station in Upper Stanley pop. 66. Bill owned a wilderness "getaway" 60 miles north on the Middle Fork Salmon, and apparently decided to improve Stanley's infrastructure for his trips to wilderness.
It and much of Stanley is now up for sale, but Stanley still is a darn fun slice of Idaho.
There are now better motels & eateries than at Mountain Village, but their service station saved my ass this morning.
Here's a link to an article on Stanley:

Then again?? I wonder how many people that used to post on the sobriety thread post on this thread.
Drinking doesn't replace religion, or reality, but it sure eases the pain.

The fifties? Geez, Fritz, how old do you think I am? The Waldorf Hysteria was a tiny little cabin
of considerable vintage that sat on an otherwise empty lot right smack dab in the middle of
town; pricey real estate, at least by Stanley metrics. As I recall we swung through there after
Steve Barnett, he of the dubious fame engendered by his eponymous self-belay system, and
I (and the Ex) spent three rainy days waiting to get onto the Lowe route on Squaretop. Woulda
been the second ascent IIRC. But we did have a righteous encounter with Aliens so the trip
wasn't a total loss.
ok, back to my Boddington's draft. SLURP!

Reilly! I think I remember, but I can't quite place the cabin. There are some great "fixer-uppers" waiting in Stanley.

Phylp: Thanks. The Stanley street dance photo was by Heidi, as is this Sandhill Crane photo, taken near Stanley.
As is this one of me realizing that downclimbing the easy boulder problem requires a verrrrrry-long stretch to the log.
