To bring Sh#t-Holiness full circle, the field foreman at the winery I worked at until a year ago died Friday of a massive heart attack while walking with his girlfriend after work. He was Hispanic, not that it matters, and a decent guy. It drove home that we're all the same and we are all headed, eventually, to the same end. I just don't get all the hate I'm seeing.

Blohm+Voss Shipyard, oh my!
German over-engineering you mean. Same reason Tigers and Panthers were so impossible to maintain and operate out on the Russian steppes. Great when they worked, but a liability when they stayed in the maintenance yards.
Same reason it takes an act of God to change out the striker in the door of my BMW Z3. Easy to break the internal antenna too, but a 2-hour nightmare digging into the trunk to replace. Myth and reality.
My vote goes to the Chinese.

Same reason pilots who have flown both prefer Boeings to Airbuses.
A Boeing allows the pilot more control.

Williams Langwiesche, the aviation writer, argued that it was the pilot-assist control features of the A320 that enabled Captain Sullenberger to safely land his plane on the Hudson.
https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=120355655
In one of his articles, Langwiesche used the memorable phrase, it was as if a long-retired French engineer had reached out his hand and gently eased the plane down on to the Hudson. Or something like that.
As you can imagine, Langwiesche's views engendered great dispute. I am not competent to judge the matter. But it seems to me that which system pilots prefer is pretty much irrelevant, from an engineering point of view. Unless you are arguing that reliance on autopilot degrades pilot skills. E.g., the crash of the Korean airliner at San Francisco airport.

There has been soooo much politard nonsense and one too many tantrums thrown into this thread that it's collapsed into a tardality.

Despite POTUS allegedly saying mean words about Haiti, it's pretty much a consensus that Haiti is a sh*thole, right?
Or is Port au Prince actually a tropical paradise?

I’d say from my travels, pretty much every country outside the US, Canada, EU and AU/NZ is some degree of sh!thole.

I grew up in California, was used to freeways maintained by CalTrans, then moved to New York and was horrified at both the design and the condition of thruways in NYC, including those in Queens, hometown of our president. I didn't understand how civilized people could stand to drive on such pavement. Given that the condition of the freeways is a hallmark of a civilization, I would say that Queens flunked. Since Donald moved out of Queens and never looked back, I would suspect that he would agree.

I guess you haven’t been back to Cali in a while. Definitely third world roads and we don’t even have to deal with freeze/thaw for the most part. WTF? We don’t pay enough taxes? I must admit my perspective has been skewed driving in Europe.

I and I
I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.
It’s true that Trump made the “shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue” remark widely attributed to him across standard and social media sites. However, the (somewhat clumsy and crass) comment also generally appeared absent of its broader context, which pertained to the loyalty of his followers, and not an actual desire, intent, or interest in shooting any individuals for the sole reason that he believed it would have no effect on his popularity.
Their remedy for this situation has been the creation of a modified vocabulary and dialect, reflecting a desire to take language forward and to confront what they see as the confusion of a corrupt and decadent society they call Babylon

"Despite POTUS allegedly saying mean words about Haiti..."
OK, let's ignore this completely, it really has absolutely no consequence, give the guy a pass (just like he's gotten his entire life) so we can all chant his slogan, MAGA.
I guess one way to do that is to just show that everyplace else is a "shithole" and deny there are any problems in the great old USA that can't be fixed by excluding those other people.

It's all in the eye of the observer.
Since we are all defective we all will see defects.
The intelligent class transcends such imperfections.
We are the imperfect class and can not imitate such advancement.
Thus we must always keep our vision focused on the intelligent class ......

He hath disgraced me and hindered me half a million, laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies—and what’s his reason? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute—and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.
