Lois - You had genuine questions on the post two up(from a woman yet!), but instead chose to retort to a quip.

Sort of makes you seem a little disingenuous.....

Medicaid, for poor children, and Medicare for those over 65:

Do pay for "lesser quality" of healthcare than one can purchase privately.

Because it is the taxpayer's dollars involved, more expensive drugs,
experimental procedures, do not apply.

So, in the case of your friend with the dental problem, Medicaid
for example WILL pay to have an infected tooth pulled because that
costs around $100 or so, but will NOT pay for the $1000 root canal.

It IS all about money, and Medicare and Medicaid are designed to be good "basic" healthcare.

Supplemental plans, extra cost, can include more expensive dental options
for your friend, if he has the money to buy that plan himself.

Medicare will pay to have the infected tooth pulled if it is deemed
a serious risk to oral health, his dentist should submit the claim.

I can't believe in general how lousy dental insurance policies are, way worse than medical. Through the years I've had some fairly decent medical insurance-some awful HMO's-that's another topic!!!! but dental plans have always sucked and hence, I've built up this disdain for dentists in general blaming them for this, since this is not the case for MD's.
I've been told the place to obtain half way decent dental care (and not too expensive) is through a university dental school, the closest one around here is USC.

"This is very complex and I feel to compare our country to say Sweden is too simplistic. But who am I to say, I am no expert."

No expert? Since when did that stop any of us from spraying our opinions around!!!!1111????

"We, as women, always think we are not smart enough or knowledgeable to debate these issues with the guys."

Lois, you are oversimplifying this phenomenon by saying 'women don't think they're as smart as guys'. IMO (for whatever the hell that's worth), women are not as attracted to direct, confrontational communication in the way men are. Men have a tendency to communicate like it's mano-a-mano combat, both overtly and subvertly. Women tend to back away from that kind of dynamic- though to some this appears to be simply backing down, more often than not they are taking stock of a situation, and if they choose to engage in it, have every bit of valuable and useful perspective, oftentimes from angles that have been completely missed.

These are gross generalizations, of course, as both genders tend to go either way from time to time, and person to person (maybe it's more accurate to describe it as mars vs. venus communication style). You've made this summation of genders before, and each time it receives rankled responses from both genders.

I know that I have never diminished my presence around a guy/group of them feeling I wasn't *smart enough* or (gag...) *as smart as* them.

Lois... climbing isn't a nine to five activity.

Most people live some distance from the crag; it's not unheard of to drive like 3 hours for a good day of climbing. Climb til dark(5pm), go have a beer and some dinner, drive home... You're talking still out there!

To say nothing that it's a holiday weekend - road trip!

Lois (and any others in agreement with her):

I'm sorry to have to say this, but it looks like you're wrong. In fact, it looks like this thread is no longer necessary, and you might as well delete it.

Why? Because the greatest American of them all, the well-known final authority on everything, Rush Limbaugh, said today: "I don't think there's one thing wrong with the American health care system. It is working just fine."

And he wasn't just pulling some stupid sound bite out of his ass, either. He was speaking, as he always does, from a thorough knowledge of the subject, based on extensive personal experience. He felt a pain in his chest while in Honolulu on Wednesday, was taken to hospital and given an angiogram, and told there was no evidence of arterial or coronary disease.

On his release, he said: "The treatment I received here was the best that the world has to offer."

So, sorry to rain on your parade, but that pretty much ends this discussion. If an incredibly wealthy leader of the conservative movement in the US can be told by hospital staff that they "found absolutely nothing wrong," then how can poor and uninsured people complain? What do they know? Mr. Limbaugh has investigated and found the US health care system to be the best in the world, therefore there is nothing left to say.
