Wikipedia on Robbin's kayaking

"In 1978, Robbins developed psoriatic arthritis, which prevented serious climbing. He took up adventure kayaking instead, completing first descents of challenging rivers from high mountain elevations. His early kayaking partners included Doug Tompkins and Reg Lake. In 1980, the three descended the San Joaquin River Gorge from Devil's Postpile to the Mammoth Pool Reservoir, 5000 feet lower and 32 miles away. In 1981, they carried their kayaks over Mount Whitney Pass at 13,777 foot elevation, into Sequoia National Park and descended 55 miles down the Kern Trench. In 1982, joined by Neusom Holmes, they descended the Middle Fork of the Kings River in Kings Canyon National Park, the largest and steepest of these three High Sierra descents. In 1983, Robbins descended the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park from Tuolumne Meadows to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. He was accompanied by Reg Lake, Chuck Stanley, Lars Holbek, John Armstrong and Richard Montgomery.

He then developed an interest in descending smaller mountain creeks by kayak during their flood stage following heavy rains. His first such project in May, 1984 was the descent of Sespe Creek, which runs through the Los Padres National Forest. He was accompanied by Yvon Chouinard, Reg Lake, John Wasserman and Jackson Frischman. Robbins called this type of trip "flash boating", and later used the technique on the Fresno River, the Chowchilla River and the middle fork of the Mokelumne River."

so that is what he was doin' Roy. Flash boating.

God Only knows why we run rivers in flood and climb in the winter.

I suppose each has its charms, but these escape me, largely.

I was becoming the slab agnostic. I didn't know what to believe. All that needs doing now is hauling off the plywood covering the slab, the sawhorses holding up the yellow tape, and the large metal plate and heavy gauge chain they left sitting there to be ripped off.

the Rev came by and woke me from my mid-day nap. No rest for the fitful. I was just dozin' anyway.

He had fifty pounds of onions in the truck from Smart & Final, and he paid far less than normal. They only get these big sacks once a year. He's good for the winter and I traded a couple of jars of Chiloe's Chile for a dozen fatties.

We decided that we'd go take a ride. I said, "Delhi." We came close, missin' the place by just a few miles. But we got to see several of the rest of the small towns in the county, and some in Stanislaus County, too--interspersed with various ag enterprises.

We headed west out 140 to Lincoln Avenue. That got us to Livingston.

Then we headed NW and got to Hagaman County Park on the Merced River.

We went across the bridge at Hagaman and went into Irwin, Hilmar, and Turlock, turning off east and south at Denair and coming back into Merced on Santa Fe Avenue.

Round trip about three hours. Low and slow, shooting as we go.
Break time for MFM.

Back at Hagaman, we saw only one person, a blonde lady on the other side of the river.
I yelled over at her to see if there was a ford to the other side.
She yelled back that she didn't know and said that I was already on the other side of the river anyway...

Down by the river...

Those are some beauties, Former Brews. I'm humbleded.

Just a technical note on my photos from yesterday's ride--most were taken through the dirty window glass of the Rev's pickup truck. The shots have a greenish cast that is just a filter, basically, so colors get washed out.

It's a pain in the behind for the Rev to pull over so he can humor me, so I just roll with it. If nothing else, it gives the shots some special 'flavor.'

And it's hard working back into auto-focus mode after so long after using manual focusing only. Oh, and we are traveling at speed, so that will blur the shot even if the speed setting is at its max.

I'm learning bit by bit and the quest will never end.

The man shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent has been identified as a Mexican national with a criminal past, officials said Thursday.
Jesus Flores-Cruz, 42, was shot twice around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday along Otay Mountain Truck Trail near Alta Road, southeast of Otay Reservoir and east of State Route 125.
A U.S. Border Patrol agent said he fired the shots because Flores-Cruz was throwing rocks and boulders at him during a foot pursuit.
San Diego County sheriff's deputies investigating the shooting said the agent feared for his life when he fired at least two shots from his duty weapon.
Officials confirmed the identity of Flores-Cruz using fingerprints from a 1996 arrest by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.
Flores-Cruz died at the scene.

The agent involved in the shooting was treated for injuries to his face from one of the rocks.

An admitted human smuggler who caused the death of two undocumented immigrants will spend seven years in federal prison.
Nicholas Zakov told a federal judge that he "takes full responsibility" for the deaths of Tarcisio Casas-Blanco and Jose Aurelio Quiroz-Casas, who suffocated in the trunk of Zakov's car while he tried to smuggle them across the U.S.-Mexico border at San Ysidro in August, 2014.

You're gonna sail through it dude. You're a young man.

Although he got shot in the war, The Bull didn't go in for any cardiac work until he was 85 (pacemaker, then stents) and he's never done anything more than class 2 scrambling.

The guy who wants to work on my eyes, promised he would show up for the surgery rested and sober.

I would accept nothing less from your team.

Gotta go. The Bull is headed back to Washington, D.C. (dare I say come hell or high water) on his "Honor Flight".
