The sad reality is that the Afghan people are not likely to benefit from these natural resources.
They certainly won't if we cut and run.

if anything this raises the stakes and means we'll probably be there for a long time but that doesn't guarantee that Afghans will benefit from these natural resources.

many countries on that continent are as rich, or more in mineral resources. This story is way over hyped.

No, it is a big story. The general public and antiwar activists probably aren't in the know on this one. Now that we all know, maybe this can be a model example of a third world country with a lot of resources stepping up and joining the 21st century. Or maybe since just about every war has been fought over real estate or natural resources, this is what this war is really all about. And not religion at all. Wow! I guess this means that NATO gets the goods. Sorry Soviets. The people will benefit more. That is a given.

That's what I was thinking too, Mimi. Now they don't need to rely on opiates and hash to build the country up.
Hopefully China doesn't come in and rape the resources.

When do "the people" ever benefit from major natural resources?
Sorry to wax cynically but I think that is a bit naive or optimistic
if you will.

Those people will NEVER accept us in their country as anything but temporary guests, buying a room in a hotel, with an air ticket leaving town in our pocket. there is NOTHING they won't do to make us miserable, including killing off their own kids in suicide attacks.
Funny because I just met the parents of an Afghani climber I know. I got along better with Mason's dad than I do with him. Shut the f*#k up with your rhetoric from MSNBC and stop and listen to people.
They want a free country. Sure, they don't want porn and rap music and all that crap, but they want freedom just like everyone else. I suspect that's why Mason's folks live here and not in their home country. It sucks.
But as any patriot, they want the best for their country. That prolly means, a democratic or parlimetary styled Republic.
THAT IS WHAT WE FIGHT FOR!!!! And God bless the guys who die for this cause.!

A lot of assumptions there. Afghanistan is not the US or the UK. It's corrupt to the core and loyalty is to tribe. If one tribe is the majority and rules (democracy) the others are exploited and rebel. It nevers ends. Same with Iraq and other countries artificially carved up or lumped together by colonialism.
We don't fight for democracy you fool. You think we cut benefits for senior at home an lay off teachers so we can afford to help the poor Afghani Muslims that we love so much have democracy? You swallowed the wrong BS.
We fight for power and resources. We fight those too weak to fight back and still they beat us. We fight because our whole economy is based on the military and ongoing wars.

ISN'T THIS WHY A PARLIMENTARY SYSTEM WOULD DO THEM AND THEIR NEIGHBORS WELL?

Dwight Eisenhower himself is the one who warned us against the military industrial complex, which is exactly what we've gotten.
Big companies making millions/billions.
Mountains of influence.
If there aren't wars from time to time for them to test their machines, rake in the dough, and show us how much we need them, then the machine collapses.

Afghan mineral deposits may worth 3 trillions USD
English.news.cn 2010-06-17 17:26:47 FeedbackPrintRSS
KABUL, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's mineral deposits may worth 3 trillions U.S. dollars and the government would utilize it for building economy and development, Afghan Minister for Mines Waheedullah Shahrani said on Thursday.
"The minerals and untapped treasures in the country may value 3 trillions U.S. dollars," Shahrani told a news conference here.
He made the remarks just days after the U.S. influential daily The New York Times citing United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that Afghanistan has mineral deposits worth one trillion U.S. dollars.

If we are fighting for democracy, why was Afghanistan picked before all the other countries that don't have democracy? What criteria does our government use to pick what countries to invade and bring them democracy?
take care

ps Why haven't we invaded North Korea? They could use some democracy don't you think?

Why haven't we invaded North Korea?
Well, besides having a signed truce with North Korea I can't think of a thing.
Yeah there's that. Then theres also:
-The rain of artillery that would flatten Seoul if we invaded.
-The shitstorm with China that would happen if we invaded.
-The likelihood of our troops and a few million South Koreans getting nuked.
-The simply fact that our military is already stretched thinly.
Other than that I think it's a pretty swell idea.

Do you guys forget what happened about 10 years ago? Do you really think we started a war in Afghanistan for resources? That minerals study was done less than a year ago.
Dave, we can't save the whole world all at once. Be patient, we'll get to the other sh#t-holes on the planet....
