Here's a hypothetical to think about. Say there is a publicly traded Fortune 500 sized company with set rules for succession of leadership. Say this company's CEO is getting on in years, frail with recent health problems, and he picks someone with no experience in the company's business to be his successor. Maybe she's a journalism major who has started her own small business and has had a modest level of success. What would you do if you were a shareholder of this company?

There are too ethics involved in this scenerio. The ethics of choosing a wise and capable running mate for the good of the country, not just to win.

"Remember, dirt - lots and lots and LOTS of (stupid) people think just like I do. What is it John is always saying - the meek (and apparently the stupid, also) shall inherit the earth. You'll just have to find a smarter friend to play with, I guess."

Just because the ego appears to be winning right now does not mean it will always be so. The meek will inherit the earth. But that will be a long time in coming. There is still much to learn.

I guess he was to busy writing 2 books about himself.

But it is the age of the celebrity - the cult of the celebrity, and when you have young movie stars, rock stars and sports stars releasing ‘autobiographies’ at ages such as 19, 22, and 25, then is is really surprising that a young

that should help him when Puty Putin wants to put nukes in cuba.

Buckwheat, I’m never one to support the Kremlin and I will never be an apologist for Russian policies and actions, unlike a certain Supertopian (it seems).

But isn’t putting missles in Poland and other countries on Russia’s border akin to putting missles in Cuba.

Provocative to say the least.

It's great that conservatives are fired up about her. That helps him.

But this isn't 2004. The Karl Rove playbook of relying on a riled up conservative base and a few hawkish mods to win national elections won't work anymore. The Repubs need moderates: since 2004, Republicanism is, in the words of a Republican leader, as popular as "dog food." Many mods, especially women, will see this as putting a thoroughly unvetted empty suit in the veep slot to pander. When a candidate is 72 yo, in this election, more than others, veep choices matter.

Last year, she said she basically hadn't given much thought to issues in Iraq. As a governor from a far-flung state with under a million people, she'd get a pass on that one. But for a Veep nominee to say this?

Hillary's women will never embrace her.

oh, wait, you guys prefer "Maverick

Ya’ darn tootin’, best TV western there was...

Who is the tall, dark stranger there?
Maverick is the name.
Ridin’ the trail to who knows where,
Luck is his companion. Gamblin’ is his game.

Smooth as the handle on a gun.
Maverick is the name.
Wild as the wind in Oregon,
Blowin’ up a canyon, easier to tame.

Riverboat, ring your bell. Fare thee well, Annabel.
Luck is the lady that he loves the best.
Natchez to New Orleans. Livin' on jacks and queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.

EDIT

Of course there are two contemporary versions...

Who is the tall, dark stranger we see?
Obama is his name.
Ridin’ the trail to Wash DC,
Luck is his companion. Preaching is his game.

Slick as the handle on a gun.
Obama is the name.
Wild as a liberal in Oregon,
Blowin’ up a lane way, he won’t take the blame.

America, ring your bell. Fare thee well, and to hell.
Arrogance is the lady that he loves the best.
Chicago to DC, Livin' on slumlord’s capital
Obama is a legend at the very best.

Who is the short geriatric there?
McCain is the name.
Ridin’ the trail to who knows where,
Luck is his companion. Flip flopping is his game.

Rough as the handle on a gun.
McSame is the other name.
Wild as the wind in Tuscon,
Blowin’ up Bush’s ass, he is just the same.

America, ring his bell. Fare thee well and next is hell.
Dementia is the lady that he knows the best.
Hanoi to Phoenix. Livin' on easy money
McSame is definitely not the best.

After a restless night of sleep and reviewing Palin's pedigree, I have to admit that McCain has picked what is essentially the conservative's version of their own:

"THE AMERICAN WET DREAM!"

and not just conservative men's wet dream, but based on LEB's gushing over her selection, conservative women's as well.

Although I predicted McCain would choose a woman V-P, I continue to believe the choice is not important. For the simple reason that the choice of V-Ps, with the possible exceptions of Lyndon Johnson and Thomas Eagleton, rarely makes much difference.

The only real issue is whether Palin has the experience and ability to step in as president, and it seems pretty clear that she doesn't at this point.

Even if McCain somehow wins, the Democrats are very likely to control the house of representatives, and may even have 60 senators. Which would mean McCain would be on a tight leash.

Obama would have been nuts to choose Hillary as his V-P, and having not chosen her, he could not choose another woman.

Anyway, hopefully at some point we can discuss the real issues in a reasonably civil manner. Issues such as: What do you think of the candidates' and parties' positions on the environment? The economy? Health care? The economy? Foreign policy? The economy? Education? The economy? Erosion of civil liberties? Unemployment? Globalization? The economy? Taxation and the deficit? Cleaning up the messes left by Bush et al? The military-political-industrial complex? The economy?

The Canadian prime minister is likely to call an election on Tuesday, in an attempt to get a majority. He currently has a minority government, although most agree the result has been good for the country. Few would trust him with a majority. So just think, starting Tuesday I can start all sorts of threads about the mysteries of Canadian politics. Imagine what you'll all learn, the entertaining discussions we'll all have, and the insights that you can offer. Won't that be fun?

Except that Russ and Locker would kill me, and Americans are famously uninterested in other countries. Probably none of the threads would get more than five posts.

The front page headline in today's Toronto Globe & Mail, the nearest thing Canada has to a national English-language newspaper: "A Vice-Presidential 'Hail Mary'". Pretty much nails it. Or frees it. Or rap bolts it. Whatever.

Thanks, skipt. I may if I'm feeling brave start a Canadian election thread. Perhaps ghost, Tami, and others will add other perspectives to it.

Strangely, Republican governments and presidents in the U.S. are considered slightly better for Canada in economic terms. They are generally more favourable to freer trade. Democratic presidents and governments generally are much more in tune with Canadian values, although sometimes less friendly in economic terms. Canada and the U.S. are each other's main trading partners, and there's a lot of interdependency.

That said, Canadians overall generally much prefer the U.S. Democrats to the Republicans, certainly to the neo-con style Republicans. Traditional conservative Republicans, such as Eisenhower, are considered OK though.

There are profound differences between the cultures, identity, values and world views of the two countries and their peoples. To us, the U.S. is sometimes a riddle wrapped inside a mystery wrapped inside an enigma.

Edit: Just for FatTrad, I should mention that I am strongly in favour of abolition of the so-called royal family, at least as far as Canada is concerned. And the other BS that goes with it. Other countries can do what they want - we don't need them. I wouldn't waste any time trying to abolish them, or arguing about it - eventually they'll just wither away. I have negligible English blood.

Dear classmates -

As an Alaskan, I am writing to give all of you some information on
Sarah Palin, Senator McCain's choice for VP. As an Alaska voter, I
know more than most of you about her and, frankly, I am horrified that
he picked her.

The most accurate description of her is red neck. Her husband works in
the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and races snow mobiles. She is a life
time member of the NRA and has worked tirelessly to allow
indiscriminate hunting of wildlife in Alaska, particularly wolves and
bears. She has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial
hunting of these predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars
that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska's failing school
system. We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the
country. Not all of you may think aerial predator hunting is so bad,
but how anyone (other than Alaska wolf-haters, of which there are
many, most without teeth), could think this use of funds is
appropriate is beyond me. If you want to know more about the aerial
hunting travesty, let me know and I will send some links to
informative web sites.

She has been a strong supporter of increased use of fossil fuels, yet
the McCain campaign has the nerve to say she has "green" policies. The
only thing green about Sarah Palin is her lack of experience. She has
consistently supported drilling in ANWR, use of coal-burning power
plants (as I write this, a new coal plant is being built in her home
town of Wasilla), strip mining, and almost anything else that will
unnecessarily exploit the diminishing resources of Alaska and destroy
its environment.

Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska, she was mayor of Wasilla,
a small red neck town outside Anchorage. The average maximum education
level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade.
Unfortunately, I have to go to Wasilla every week to get groceries and
other supplies, so I have continual contact with the people who put
Palin in office in the first place. I know what I'm talking about.
These people don't have a concept of the world around them or of the
serious issues facing the US. Furthermore, they don't care. So long as
they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and bears
and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the
wilderness, they're happy. I wish I were exaggerating.

Sarah Palin is currently involved in a political corruption scandal.
She fired an individual in law enforcement here because she didn't
like how he treated one of her relatives during a divorce. The man's
performance and ability weren't considered; it was a totally personal
firing and is currently under investigation. While the issue isn't
close to the scandal of Ted Steven's corruption, it shows that Palin
isn't "squeaky clean" and causes me to think there ay be more issues
that could come to light. Clearly McCain doesn't care.

When you line Palin up with Biden, the comparison would be laughable
if it weren't so serious. Sarah Palin knows nothing of economics
(admittedly a weak area for McCain), or of international affairs,
knows nothing of national government, Social Security, unemployment,
health care systems - you name it. The idea of her meeting with heads
of foreign governments around the world truly frightens me.

In an increasingly dangerous world, with the economy in shambles in
the US, Sarah Palin is uniquely UNqualified to be vice president. John
McCain is not a young man. Should something happen to him such that
the vice president had to step in, it would destroy our country and
possibly the world to have someone as inexperienced and inappropriate
as Sarah Palin. The choice of Palin is a cheap shot by McCain to try
to get Hillary supporters to vote for him. when McCain introduced her
today, Palin had the nerve to compare herself with Hillary and
Geraldine Ferraro. Sarah Palin, you are no Hillary Clinton.

To those of you who, like me, supported Hilary and were upset that she
did not get the nomination, please don't think that Sarah Palin is a
worthy substitute. If you supported Hillary, regardless of what you
think the media and the democratic party may have done to undermine
her campaign, the person to support now is Obama, not Sarah Palin. To
those of you who are independent or undecided, don't let the choice of
Palin sway you in favor of McCain. Choosing her shows how unqualified
McCain is to be president. To those of you who are conservative, I
guess you have no choice for president. But please try to see how the
poor choice of Palin tells us a great deal about McCain's judgment.
While the political posturing inherent in the choice of Palin is
obvious, the more serious issue is the fact that the VP is, literally,
a heartbeat away from the presidency. Sarah Palin is totally and
unequivocally unqualified to be vice president, let alone president.

I know this is a lengthy and emotional email, but the stakes are high.
I thought it might help for all of you, regardless of political
affiliation, to know something about Palin from someone who has to
live with her administration in Alaska on a daily basis.
