Who would have thought we could beat Brazil with this line up ( I think the answer is, Keller did ) I always liked Preki that guy had attitude.
USA: 18-Kasey Keller; 12-Jeff Agoos, 4-Mike Burns, 22-Alexi Lalas, 3-Eddie Pope; 2-Frankie Hejduk, 6-John Harkes, 13-Cobi Jones, 9-Joe-Max Moore, 11-Eric Wynalda (20-Brian McBride, 81), 7-Roy Wegerle (14-Preki Radosavljevic, 60)
The official lineup was Keller and some other guys....
Lalas played the quintiscential matador defence.

Can anyone really make a case for Mexico, Costa Rica or the U.S.A. doing squat in this tournament despite their openers?
If any of those teams gets to the quarters it would be huge, but CONCACAF is doing better than UEFA so far. Can you make a case for a Spain getting out of the group stage? I bet you didn't predict they would get stuffed.
That's why they play.

Yowza. Not only is Spain out, but they basically looked terrible going out. Outscored 7-1. You could have gotten some pretty big odds on that.
And they really did look bad. Costa was useless, the defense not particularly good, and should have played De Gea instead of Casillas.

agreed, in hindsight. I would have liked a different outcome for Spain.

Lorenzo, I completely agree. That's why they play the games...and that's why we watch them!

Yes that 1962 match was scandalous, but Schumacher did decide to stop Battiston at all costs. Broken jaw, knocked out teeth, knocked unconscious, hospital. Schumacher knew what he was doing. Well, sure, it was an awful foul. About on par with the elbow that Leonardo threw that broke tab Ramos' skull in 1994 and sent him to the hospital for 7 months. That it didn't get an ejection is as shocking as deJong not getting a red card from Howard Webb last cup

But the battle of Santiago had at least 9 incidents of punches being thrown in all out brawls (not to mention a couple head hunting fouls that matched Shumacher's) and Ken Aston only managed to see two of them, apparently.
Then he walked off the field to leave the two teams to brawl.

Colombia/Cote d'Ivoire is gonna be another barn burner. Love 'em both and will feel for either loser.
I've long said Drogba ranks as one of the best all time if measured by the quality of his touches.
I suppose a draw would be acceptable but I don't see that happening with these sides. Les Éléphants have more incentive to win as a draw would put them second and likely to face, well,
whoever wins Group D.
Colombia 3 Cote d'Ivoire 2

All three games should be good today.
I don't care how old Drogba is, he should be starting.
The first day I don't care who wins in each match. I liked how England played, but would like to see more of Uruguay with Suarez playing.

That 94 match is one of the reasons I will never be a Brasil fan. Ramos marked Leanardo out the game. Ramos was causing all kinds of havoc for thier offense and that skull crack was a result of total frustration and that fact that Brasil never got any kind of penalty illustrated how much Brasil is favored by FIFA and refereeing. Ramos never really came back from that head injury and he was arguably the best player to every suit up for the UNMNT.
This was once again on display this year during the Croatia vs Brasil match. Brasil has had some good years but without the constant favoritism in calls or non-calls they are average. With Mexico that yellow card tackle by Silva really should have been a red since it was a scissors tackle and from behind which was out right banned a decade ago and Silva was arguably the only defender between Chicharito and the goal. I do not like Chicharito or Mexico but that could very easily have been a career ending tackle.

Admirable defensive discipline by Les Elephants but Serey was close to letting his emotions run away from him. Les Elephants have had the better buildups but very poor last touches to the point of carelessness plus they are not running into space off the ball. Toure looks lackadaisical.
Time for Didier!
