Marlow,

I didn't really expect you to exclude Amundsen, I just wanted to give you a challenge. Do you really live in Oslo? In that case, you can "give" Amundsen to whomever you want, and it's your thread to boot.

On a tangent: through a curious set of circumstances, I ended up with both volumes of the first (English?) edition of Nansen's "Furthest North". I actually read it, then gave it to a dear friend who claims more Norwegian heritage than myself. Culturally I really don't have any Norwegian in me, but blood wise I'm 1/4. I have to say I didn't quite realize the book's monetary value, but I would have given it to him anyway. Anyway I just found out that an abridged inexpensive reprint came out a few years ago, and I'm getting it for myself for a holiday present. I was blown away by my first reading of it, and I'm looking forward to another go around. I did pretty much grow up in SF and remember seeing the Gjoa neglected down by the beach in the '60s. Unfortunately, I didn't know its importance at that time.

WTF

Bieber's a famous Canadian, but maybe he should be given a place on the herostratically famous list as the story develops...

Darwin

Thanks for sharing the story. I don't know which Norwegians are famous in Canada and can be counted among the honourary Canadians. Maybe none. Is Nansen better off than Amundsen? ;o)

Please don't confuse famous with infamous. And not even warm and cuddly
Canadians are allowed to claim foreign saints as honorary citoyens however
tempting Nansen may be due to having created his 'own' passport.

Syncronicity - Congratulations on your good taste. Make sure to get your friends out to vote in the next election. It may interest you to know that our current dictator ... oops "Prime Minister" and his father pimped for Imperial Oil before Stevie bought ... oops got his current job. Remind you of anybody?

William Barker, VC, DSO & Bar, MC & Two Bars. Most decorated serviceman in the history of Canada, and indeed in the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth of Nations.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on, Sunday, 27 October 1918.

While returning his Snipe to an aircraft depot, he crossed enemy lines at 21,000 feet above the Foręt de Mormal. He attacked an enemy Rumpler two-seater which broke up, its crew escaping by parachute; (the aircraft was of FAA 227, Observer Lt Oskar Wattenburg killed). By his own admission, he was careless and was bounced by a formation of Fokker D.VIIs of Jagdgruppe 12, consisting of Jasta 24 and Jasta 44. In a descending battle against 15 or more enemy machines, Barker was wounded three times in the legs, then his left elbow was blown away, yet he managed to control his Snipe and shoot down or drive down three more enemy aircraft (Two German pilot casualties were Lt. Hinky of Jasta 44, wounded; and Vfw. Alfons Schymik of Jasta 24, killed). The dogfight took place immediately above the lines of the Canadian Corps. Severely wounded and bleeding profusely, Barker force landed inside Allied lines, his life being saved by the men of an RAF Kite Balloon Section, who transported him to a field dressing station. The fuselage of his Snipe aircraft was recovered from the battlefield and is preserved at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, Ontario.

Speaking of Canadian flying aces, Billy Bishop has to be mentioned as the greatest of WWI. But for WWII, we had Buzz Beurling
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Beurling

This guy shot down 27 planes in 14 days in Malta and was an intriguing renegade type guy.

A teetotaler and non-smoker, he dedicated himself totally to the art of aerial combat. Tending to be a loner on the ground and in the air, Beurling angered his commanders with his disdain for teamwork. His relentless concentration on aerial fighting led Beurling to develop a marked skill at deflection shooting and together with his "situational awareness", he was soon recognised as a deadly fighter pilot. Like many successful Spitfire pilots, Beurling developed the habit of only engaging enemy aircraft at 250 yards or less — a range at which many other pilots would be breaking away. Beurling owed his spectacular success to remarkably good eyesight and the ability to "toss his Spitfire" into violent combat manoeuvres. If jumped from behind, he would pull back on the stick of his Mk VC Spitfire so hard that the aircraft would enter a violent stall, flick over and spin. This was a hard, sudden and very dangerous act for the enemy fighter on his tail to follow. Beurling would also ram both ailerons and rudder into a sudden and violent turn, causing his Spitfire to flip over and drop like a stone. Only a very experienced (or crazy) pilot would pull such stunts more than once or twice. Beurling made them a matter of habit. He knew that the Spitfire could be nursed out of such self-induced trouble and get him home safely.[38]

And if u got Russ Courtnall u gotta add his brother Geoff Courtnall. If be careful with the hockey though. That list could get huge:

Don't forget bobby hull's traitor son Brett who chose to play for the us Olympic hockey team in salt lake only to get a silver medal @ the hands of the Canadian team.

A few other hockey players

Guy lafleur

Scott & Rob niedermayer

Georges Vezina (an award in his honor given to the best goalie in the NHL every year)

Brian (Bryan?) Trottier

Paul Coffey

Mark Messier

Mark Recchi (from my hometown- was my coach in hockey camp when I was a kid!)

Art Ross (another annual award is handed out in his honour -can't remember what for?? Sportsmanship?)

Grant Fuhr (did a bunch of blow & stopped a bunch of shots, this enabling Gretzky & the mid 80s oilers to become one of the greatest hockey legacies ever)

I could go on but I'm not much of a hockey guy, just played a bit when I was a kid :-)

Oh & Eric Lindros too, even though he never amounted to much he was pretty famous & had one of the best amateur careers in history.

Not hockey, but what about this little Canadian #

Hey Marlow - would you consider opening a category to include life forms that make us ashamed to admit that we are Canadians? Rob Ford, of course, but pride of place should be offered to the sociopathic dung beetle who masquerades as our "Prime Minister" - pudgy Stevie Harper.

Of course it's no disgrace to be pudgy, but an ideological fanatic who variously labels those who do not share his twisted beliefs as "enemies of the state", "pedophiles", "supporters of the Taliban" and so on has earned the justifiable contempt of the 60% of Canadians who DIDN'T vote for him and the parade of hyenas who share his values.
