escopeta some of those SUP's are equipped with fishing gear..

I always feel more confident in the water having that paddle in my hand to beat away some wildlife..

Now that I've been SUPing a few times I have to say that yes it is fun.

Coming from a whitewater kayaking and surf kayaking background I thought it looked pretty gay as well (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Granted it ain't surfing and it ain't kayaking but it is good clean mellow fun.

You can get wet if you want to or not.

So, shut up haters!

Hey Pyro, is that Ross Cove?

SUP can't be beat for super small summer days when I would otherwise not get in the water. Might have to paddle out to the kelp beds this week and do some whale watching.

Anything waist high or bigger, I'd rather surf.

I did alot of SUP over the summer with my family and we all had a blast. I'll make the caveat that I just started to learn to surf (and then after doing SUP first), and I dig it. Got to cruise around with the kids, check out seal lions up close, and lots of other fish in the shallows. There were even some humpbacks that came crusing through Redondo and Hermosa this summer which I did not get a chance to get out. More like a nature hike on the ocean than an adrenaline sport, but really good. I've always loved being on the water though, whether on a boat or board, and this was a way to do it and get a little exercise and get close to nature. It's a big wild world out there just a short ways out from the beach.

Give me a kayak instead any day -- for flat water.

I totally get SUP for surfing. Better vision, easier take offs, faster to paddle, etc.

Just a curiosity Pyro. No need to dig deeper. I had a memorable surf at Ross' a few years back. There was a SUP out before I got in the water that was catching bombs that day.

This seems like a better setup than those innertube fishing deals.

One of my surfing buds, who is a very good surfer, herniated a disc and started stand up on flat water for exercise.

He was doing this about a year later.

If the whole point of it is to get a workout in the water, in the most inefficient way possible, why not straddle a 50 gal drum and paddle it with a piece of conduit. That would be a hell of a workout.

If that were the sole purpose, I'd agree with you. However, I get out there just to get out there and have some fun. To me, it's kind of like riding my mt. bike. There's a workout, but that part is incidental.
