Had a great time at Wintergrass - 2017. Wrapped up today.
Some highlights:
Hot Rize, with Tim O'Brien
A retrospective musical/visual presentation by John McEuen, founding member of the Dirt Ban, on the development of the first "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album.
And getting to know SuperTopo's own Perry Beckham ("Chief") a bit. Great guy! He promised me that he was merely a "solid intermediate" on bluegrass guitar, but I'm here to tell you that he undersold his skills. He's good!
I joined in with this circle for a while, and dazzled them with my renowned mediocrity. I don't think they'll ever be the same.
At one point, I felt a lurking over my left shoulder as I backed them up with my chops, and I turned to my left, and there was Tim O'Brien, practically on my left shoulder. I kept chopping away, and asked him, "Are you looking to pick up some mandolin tips?"
He said, "Yeah, man..."

something, well i think so?
upthread i posted the jake schepps expedition quartet ^^^. before doing so, i ran an ST last name search and both previous times i've post stuff by him
showed up in the results plus a note by a poster screen-named "musician" whose singular '07 appearance here was a sensitive remembrance
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=432518&msg=434334#msg434334
on the pete absolon thread in which the target word "schepps" does not appear within the body of the text ???
it was however signed by "jake" from CO and mentions NOLS, WMI and composing for the 5-string, so ...
i have concluded that searches look into the sign-up data that is not visible to the public ... AHEMMM.
i would like to welcome him as one of "us" to the forum and submit for consideration:
musician, a decade late i guess, but "who plays bluegrass" and WAY beyond

Tom,
It was great to finally meet at Wintergrass and share a couple tunes.
I think this was my fifteenth time to the festival and I didn't take in a single show!
Just jammed.
Walleye, congrats on your LSV!
I owned a Clarence White Brazilian for a while and really liked that guitar.
(It now belongs to Alex Lowe's son Sam).
Now.. regarding the hog in Tom's picture.
Transitional 1939 D18 with rear X, wide neck and no popsicle brace.
Apart from needing a neck set and a new bridge it's all original and crack free.
Wayne Henderson was nigh speechless at it's condition and said he'd never seen a wide neck D18 that clean.
Powerful guitar and a perfect companion to the 37 herringbone so I had to buy it!
Along with the D45 A 1936, I now have a pretty decent set of Martin dreads.
Tom, you need to plan to come to the Wenatchee festival in June!
Happy Bluegrass!

For anyone in the Seattle area, there's a great concert coming up by Special Consensus (their mando player is a buddy of mine) on June 11 in Snohomish.
Great little venue, and here's the link:

My current mando is nice looking, nice sounding "production" model, but doesn't have that sweet tone of a high end, handmade instrument. Perry Beckham told me at Wintergrass this year that I ought to "buy the most expensive mandolin I can't afford." (Did I quote you correctly, Chief?)
As it turns out, a good buddy of mine is the mando player for Special Consensus, and he has switched out his Collings for a Hinde mandolin. And it turns out that I can get into one of these things for less than a Collings--at least for the time being. So, my wife gave me the encouraging thumbs up to commission one, and it will be ready for me sometime next year. So stoked!
Here's my friend's mando, of which I've commssioned a virtual replica:

We just attended a short bit of "OFOAM" in Ogden. Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music. Mostly to see Hot Rize.
After the shows, the band hung out and we got a chance to chat with Dr. Banjo hisself. And the rest of the boys. And they all signed a copy of their latest. Man, those guys can play...
Great venue.

Walleye - I just picked up a 1990 HD-28. I find if I buy a guitar now and then it gets me back to playing regularly and prevents the chops from sliding backward was fast.

I am more of a blues, folk, old country neil young, almans, willie, dead etc player but most of the folks i play with these days are heavily into bluegrass so by default i play a lot of bluegrass. Good stuff if its done with soul. absolutly horrible if its just a contest to see how fast you can pick or fiddle...
