Bumped into and climbed often with PhD KB on Woodson BITD.
The last time I saw him was at J-Tree approx. 1989/90ish top-rope soloing many climbs side by side with a jumar, harness, and chest harness set-up.
Just curious if anyone has bumped into him since then. Wonder how he is doing these days. Great man.
It looks like you guys had a great weekend. I bet no-one talked politics or religion too to make it happen ;-))

Back in the day I remember Mr. Brueckner with his trademark bandana around his forehead cruising through Hidden Valley at Josh with the top down in his convertible Mercedes.
Well, the weekend didn't happen because of me, politics or religion Klimmer, that's for sure, but because of MUCH more than that!

I used to run into Keith (and often his wife) at Woodson all the time. Such a barrel-chested, burly guy, and so committed to bouldering. Really enjoyed him being part of the landscape!

I won't be so absurd as to say I know much about Woodson, but I know
what I like.
I've heard that delightful, overhanging off-width in Ed's video called,
variously, Maria's Delight, Maria's Overhang, and Maria's Off-width.
I don't know what any guidebooks say. I first saw it when Grug showed it
to me at the 07 shindig. That day was, I believe, the first time he'd
been to it.
The question for me, though, is:
Is it Maria's, as in Maria Cranor or is it Maria's as in Maria Muldaur or
Santa Maria, and, if the latter, who is Maria?
Also, did Maria (or Maria) first climb it?

These classic posts from bvb in 2007 are crudely paraphrased in Ed's
video.
He also expounded earlier in this thread.

wannabes.
all your sends are belong to me.

p.s. grades mean nothing at woodson. 5.10d = V0. so maria's OW is V0?? even tho it's overhanging, insecure, with a very bad landing, and it's 25' up before the business is over??
heh.
have at it, homeslice.
p/s -- if you like wide, go do sickle crack (first pic in this thread.)
remember, it's 5.9.
if you don't do wide cracks, bring a bro (spotters don't do you no good at 30+ feet) who has a cell phone. you can join your name to the long list of idjits who been choppered out of woodson on their way to meet the grevious angel.
watch your back, don't get in over your head. woodson ain't the happies. it's a "bouldering" area where people have died.
i'm just sayin', is all.

mtwoodsonguide: let's not forget the ogre -- has some 5.11 offwidth as i recall.
i mentioned this before, and i don't know how this rumor got started, but the ain't no OW on the VP's Office. it starts with flared, technical fists in a really overhanging corner (for me -- and i've got small hands) then steadily gets smaller, winding up as thin hands.
and i must say, maria's ofwidth will put some hair on your chest if you go on-sight it without a rope or pads, like all up on it back in the day n' shite. it's high with a scary overhanging chicken-wing crux -- staring down past your feet at the hard sloping landing 15' down -- right before you can pop into the sanctuary of the squeeze chimmney....

From the wiki article above there is a link to this very interesting interview with Keith.
Kinda long. I'll read the entire interview later. But scimming it, no mention of climbing. What's up with that? ;-) Only physics.

dude,
Maria's will definitely put hair on your chest if you get on it with no rope. Especially on-sight, with no pad! I think the offwidth section on The Ogre is way easier than Maria's. Even I was able to do it (The Ogre's wide section) first try with two hand-stack/Levitation moves before getting a solid fist. Fell off of the fingers section though...

It was great seeing images on the thread of people and climbs from long ago. Woodson's a special place and looks like it was a cool event. Maybe next time.
It was a wee bit colder in Scotland over the weekend than in Southern California, but the ice was in primo condition.
Happy Trails...

forgot to say full props to the guy who hauled up the beer and soda wagon,
forgot to bring a jug that day, and i was Parched! what a gift from heaven.
we were talkin to an older man at Woodson on saturday, he said he was 82,
86? can not remember.
said he had been climbing there for years, i wonder if it was Keith?
dang, Davey Crockett is dead.
and Daniel Boone. 2 mountain men in one fell swoop.

I think the guy's name who hauled the beer up was Jack (not sure of last name), but he sure was a god-send. That icey-cold goodness really hit the spot!
It definitely was a good time there. Pretty neat to chat with and see people who up until now were really just names in a guidebook to me, or people I know of through ST. Pretty cool to climb alongside those who have left their own indelible mark on climbing history.

I noticed Keith Brueckner's name mentioned earlier, and although I produced, (what I thought,) a superior guide to Woodson, he was and will always be a great friend. I in fact had the immense pleasure to be his guide in the Verdon Gorge, as well as many other areas in France in 1984...MP.

Yeah the beer cooler was Jack "Tripper" Marshall. He and his son hauled up like 2+ cases of beer and coke on ice, I offered to help with the haul in the parking lot, but they were good to go. We owe him at some point....Tripper if yer lurking......THANKS and thank Jack Jr. and say hi to Kathy, ask her if she remembers the drive home from Yosemite with me in the "Nazi staff mobile", burning HARD all the way to Santa Monica!
Peace

I heard that Keith Bruekner was there, and did Baby Robbins boulder style. Everyone's reaction, "is he still alive?".
We want to hear from a witness.
