"The Fiesta de la Luna was begun by the Chula Vista Women’s Club in 1932, and was an annual celebration until 1942, when World War II interrupted. In 1946 it returned, and in the 1947 booklet it was described as “one of the major celebrations in San Diego county.”--Susan Walter, CV Star-News
Clowns...not so much.
I did go for a ride yesterday. I was going to the Park, thinking a nice hike into Starr King might be a good way to spend a couple of days...
I opted out part way up Preston Rd. (Of course I would take the back way!) Too hot, too knackered from stiffness and a nasty lack of sleep.
Had the backpack ready, just could not see spending hours in the heat abusing my knees, becoming even more of a derelict.
And I dint really wanna go by mouself.
I may be Starr King crazy. But I'm not starking mad.
It's a walk to share.
Lots to do and see up there.
Do it in a pair.
Thanks for the tip, Throwpie. I think I know the place to which you went. There is a pair of mesas I recall on the left, going to Hornitos, just a ways across the river near the old saw pond below McSwain; is that the spot? I just can't remember any on the right side.
This means you'll have to come show me, you know. Bring your shoes. And some "head gear."
Mick Padilla used to believe that there was a cave up there where Joaquin hid his stuff. We walked up there and checked it out. Bird lime. So we ran baaaack dooooown the slooooope to the Kaarman Ghiaaaaaaaaaaa. Whew! I used to love to haul ass down those talus slopes and hillsides.

This is what you get in Bonita (right next door to CV) for $5,950,000.
I used to run up the hill past this house when it was being built and was always kind of curious. The original builder/owner had about $3.9 million in loans and defaulted. House went into foreclosure and was purchased around 18 months ago for $1,950,000. So, these new owners are looking for a $4,000,000 return on their investment. Good work if you can get it.

Former Twin Pines Horse Stable Fenkell Detroit 5/08 - seems like nothing lasts
Lugging those milk bottles was not easy for a little kid.
My father, Arthur (Art) Janssen, in the above photo taken by the Royal Oak Tribune in 1950, worked for Twin Pines when he got home from WWII in 1946, the year I [Jim Janssen] was born. His routes were in Birmingham and we had people like Al Kaline, Gordie Howe as customers.

Like white diamonds and good luck, I've always thought of purple cows as being distant memories that aren't real.
Purple cow initially became famous as a chimerical referent in a short humorous verse by Gelett Burgess :
I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.
Burgess became somewhat exasperated with the success of his poem, of which he was constantly reminded. A few years later, he penned a riposte that became almost as well known as the original. It was titled "Confession: and a Portrait Too, Upon a Background that I Rue" and appeared in The Lark, number 24 (April 1, 1897):
Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"—
I'm Sorry, now, I wrote it;
But I can tell you Anyhow
I'll Kill you if you Quote it!
However, the original has, in its own small way, become a classic, and parodic versions are common.
Nice to know we ain't common, huh?
Ah, a good draught of lilac choline before bedtime! Right up there with that hoodoo juice zBrown's been slugging.
And another quart so we don't wake the hell up!
Ended up watching Under California STars with Roy Rogers & Fat Andy & his cussins.

Choline done took her love to town.
Edit: In the last minute or so of Under California Stars is one bitchen black woody, pulling a hoss trailer.

Finally made it over to the Tomaselli mural today. Good thing a tribute to the Zeroes was done in La Jolla, rather than Chula Vista. Note, no graffiti.
Right close by, a Nash Metropolitan very similar to the one that several members of my family owned BITD.

I just had an odd little flash--
But no poem's titled Ogden's Nash.
Instead, I fund this:
COME ON IN, THE SENILITY'S FINE
People live forever in Jacksonville and St. Petersburg and Tampa,
But you don't have to live forever to become a grampa.
The entrance requirements for grampahood are comparatively mild,
You only have to live until your child has a child.
From that point on you start looking both ways over your shoulder,
Because sometimes you feel thirty years younger and sometimes
thirty years older.
Now you begin to realize who it was that reached the height of
imbecility,
It was whoever said that grandparents have all the fun and none of
the responsibility.
This is the most enticing spiderwebs of a tarradiddle ever spun,
Because everybody would love to have a baby around who was no
responsibility and lots of fun,
But I can think of no one but a mooncalf or a gaby
Who would trust their own child to raise a baby.
So you have to personally superintend your grandchild from diapers
to pants and from bottle to spoon,
Because you know that your own child hasn't sense enough to come
in out of a typhoon.
You don't have to live forever to become a grampa, but if you do
want to live forever,
Don't try to be clever;
If you wish to reach the end of the trail with an uncut throat,
Don't go around saying Quote I don't mind being a grampa but I
hate being married to a gramma Unquote.
--Ogden Nash
This is not directed by Jack, nor is Peter in the reel, and Dennis flat refused to be seen, period...though there are a few bikers involved.
It begins with spiders, continues with a hole in the ground at Snelling, proceeds to further holes in Hornitos, ending with...a bunny.
scene:
After stopping at the Heidelberg Cement plant on State 59, I stop to tinkle my toes in a roadside irrigation ditch and find a field that goes like forever. And a smaller one across the road. All weeds.Pay as you exit, but the show's not over. I'm taking five.

THE TRIP, pt. two.
scene:
I come driving up to the intersection of G Grade and Hwy 59. My attention is diverted to some lily pads. I intersect with some oak pods at their pad in an oak that is growing next to the road and is part of the fence to keep folks out of the water in the canal. This corner was at one time (specifically, on that day the trout farm opened it may have seemed like the object of pilgrim anglers--it was never very successful) the Trout-Fishing Mecca of the Central Valley. I think the owners charged five bucks, maybe, a nominal fee, at any rate, for a "limit" at the trout farm, now derelict.
There is also a pretty darn big hole in the ground. Hmmm. Frisco bunnies? Frisco foxes? Wee weir folks from Frisco?

scene:
At the river bridge in Merced Falls there is one party fishing from the other side on that bridge. There is a convenient patch of shade under some locusts, oaks, and willows growing at the north end of the bridge next to the intersection of Hornitos Rd. and Exchecquer Dam Rd., which follows the river upstream to the dam and camping areas and boat launching. Hornitos Rd., well, it's obvious that it goes there, but it continues on over to Cathey's Valley after. Across the river are the mesas with the potential psychedelic aura, the ones mentioned by Thorpie. The various trees here have been turned into a magic place by a combination of cottonwood fluff blowing up and down the river and by spider webs which catch them. It's like a fairy land in miniature.
It is also over 100 in the shade!More on Monday.
It is Monday. What happened to Sunday?
Good night. Enjoy your blackened french fries, everyone, and remember to brush your teeth after.

scene:
The gate to the ranch where the mesas lie; a view of a pond and cattle on one side of the road, the Sierra Nevada foothils behind me on the other side. I interview a man in a car, following a second car, at the gates. They are electric gates, and I ask the gentleman does he know the owners of this place? (It's vast, a cattle ranch.) "No English, senor." He points to the other car, now going into the ranch, accelerating away: adios. So I suck it up and leave after taking pix. Motorcyclists abound on this road, like the rocks now littering the ground at a higher elevation. I climb in the car to a spot to take more pix. Until I arrive at Hornitos an hour later, close to sundown.

Early in the morning on July 29, a driver crashed his car through a gate near Osprey Street and flew off of Sunset Cliffs into the sand below. The car flipped in mid-air as it plunged close to 50 feet before landing on its rear and then settling right side up on the sand.
The male driver, the lone occupant, is believed to have been intoxicated. He emerged from the vehicle and was seen walking around it before huddling in a cave. Lloyd Bridges was not onsight and the auto was not a Nash.
We used to jump off the cliffs into the water. Never considered doing the car thing (well there was one time down in Baja, but no one was in the car).
A helicopter had to raise the driver from the beach due to the location; the cliffs are difficult to climb in that area.
