Donald Trump might be “donning” a new look soon, after the real estate mogul and reality television star
was ordered by a federal judge on Monday to pay out a $1.3 million fine for the death of an endangered animal,
which was used to help make his famously unconvincing toupee.
Trump’s wig, crafted exclusively for him by famed New York wigmakers at the “BelHair Emporium” in Manhattan,
uses the hair of the critically-endangered Brown Spider Monkey, a neotropical primate found in small numbers in and around Colombia.
The wigmakers have been under investigation since 2013 for allegedly paying drug cartels to hunt
and kill the rare apes and ship their hair to the United States, for use in their extremely expensive wigs.
Trump reportedly paid a little more than $812k for the hairpiece, which is one of a kind
and uses more of the endangered animal’s hair than any other wig the company makes.
The wig’s crafters also allegedly used the pubic hair from water buffalo, which aren’t endangered,
to improve the hair’s tactile feel and general texture.
All of the Brown Spider Monkey and water buffalo hair used in the creation of the wig was carefully,
expertly dyed to more closely resemble Trump’s previous wigs, which he’s been wearing since the mid-1990’s.
Monday morning, a federal judge ruled that BelHair would need to pay out millions in fines, and their customers,
most of whom are celebrities and politicians, would help carry the burden of those fines.
Donald Trump, who has spent a total of more than $3 million with the company over the years,
will pay out $1,314,511.37 total, which is due by the end of the year. Nicolas Cage also owes fines because of the court’s decision, worth more than $600,000, while John Travolta will pay around $490,000.
Madonna will owe money, too, though the court hasn’t determined how much she’ll owe yet due to discrepancies with receipts.
A spokesperson for Trump refused to comment on the court’s decision, though one long-time employee says,
“The Donald” is “absolutely outraged” and that “he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place,
because he can’t publicly admonish the decision without tipping his hand, or in this case, his toupee,”
adding later that “he doesn’t want anyone to know he wears a wig, even though it’s obvious to literally everyone on the planet Earth."
