The Bugs Bunny change-up.
A changeup is a type of pitch in baseball. The changeup is the staple off-speed pitch, usually thrown to look like a fastball but arriving much slower to the plate. Its reduced speed coupled with its deceptive delivery is meant to confuse the batter's timing. It is meant to be thrown the same as a fastball, but simply farther back in the hand, which makes it release from the hand slower but still retaining the look of a fastball. A changeup is generally thrown 8–15 miles per hour slower than a fastball. If thrown correctly, the changeup will confuse the batter because the human eye cannot discern that the ball is coming significantly slower until it is around 30 feet from the plate. For example, a batter swings at the ball as if it was a 90 mph fastball but it is coming at 75 mph which means he is swinging too early to hit the ball well, making the changeup very effective.
Other names include change-of-pace, Bugs Bunny change-up, the dreaded equalizer, and simply change. The changeup is sometimes called an off-speed pitch, although that term can also be used simply to mean any pitch that is slower than a fastball. In addition, before at least the second half of the twentieth century, the term slow-ball was used to denote pitches not a fastball or breaking ball, which almost always meant a type of changeup. Therefore, the terms slow-ball and changeup could be used interchangeably.

In the old days the area which includes Chicano Park was called Logan Heights. It's now Barrio Logan and my junior high school friend Mike Schnorr had a lot to to with the murals.
Unfortunately, a while back Mike walked up the road in the background onto the Coronado Bridge and jumped to his death.
When we attended a memorial for Mike I was pleased to see that this place was still in business.
First went there in 1966 (and it was already 34 years old) when it was much smaller and the only name we ever called it was the "old man's". The old woman made the tortillas in the back.
That's them apparently in 1935.
There's even a modern day video, which sadly just makes me wonder what happened to the good old days. Turn down the sound.

I'll let these out of my picture file. They need to be shown.

Insects in the flash. Corn irrigating at Planada. The corn is not eatin' corn, sweet and tasty. It's what the farmer might tell you. He'll say it's for Corn Nuts, inferior for boiling. I "find" corn and this was found to be good enough for Mr. Food.

This is the original. It pays to look carefully at photos you want to use before you post them. In honesty, the Simon boys were with me and alerted me to the hummer just after I took the shot. He was gone when I looked up.

Like the hummer, these geese were only caught by the camera at this long range because the Simon boys again yelled at me and I got lucky!

I suspect these may be the two geese from the picture above.
The dictum is that the assistants need to keep their eyes open when the photographer is occupied. They gave me two big head ups and here's a SHOUT for you two worthies.
I was occupied with trying to shoot rings on the river from trout rising when the geese sailed by like sixty.
I was standing right here when the geese flew over. Lucky me!
The geese live at the other end of this bass pond. The ponds on the property are fed by a year-round ditch that runs along Merced Falls Road, more or less. With no supply from the slightly-higher ditch, the ponds would not be there, just cobble piles. The MID controls access to the water in the river. Mike and Michelle, the OLDER Berminghams, rely on a well for all domestic uses.
And the river keeps a-talkin'.
And I keep on listenin'.
It has a message for me every time.
They are always different, depending on moods, both of ours.
Did I tell you the river is cold? And deadly. The current's really strong here, though it seems flat, huh?

hey there say, mouse... wow, i have been busy this summer, with yard, so not here much, and don't stay long, due to dial up, :(
well, THIS has been very NICE and fun! love the merced countryside and
all the neat pics... i WANT so make you a surprise with some of them, later
in the year... very nice stuff!!!
say, thanks for the restaurant share, too...
we always had fresh homemade tortillas... my ex mother in law's were best, but i like how i make mine now... as i keep the lard out, :))
it is somewhere in the middle of tortilla and chapati, is better said...
but sure does the 'use it well' trick, :)

zbrown--our whole town was far more mexican than others, when i was in south texas, and all of our families there, relatives etc, DID accept anything! you are so true, as to that... and no 'race'harm done by you... it is just the way of life in south texas:
USE what you are fortunate enough to have come your way! nothing was wasted... (except sadly, unless the dad was an alcoholic then, the whole home slowly went to waste, for those connected to such --but that is true EVERYWHERE for all)

My little patch, this county, it's all I have to share mostly, so that's that. I think a little interest in the places we trail through is good for any traveler, climber or other.
HISTORY, THEIR STORY IS BETTER
All towns have histories. All towns have mysteries.
In Snelling Mike kept his bees. In Canoga Park live the MisterEs.
We find things out shooting the breeze. Every chance meeting you should seize.
Let folks know that you come in peace. [close!] And cross your eyes and wear tie-dyed tees.
They'll look at you like you have disease. But be polite and cover your sneeze.
You'll be surprised at with which ease you find out about their own family trees.

I come here to shelter from stormy threads, not simply to do what it is ever that I do here.
Like in the old Twilight Zone, where the producers assured us viewers of certain things, I feel I'm a git more in controll here on the Flams.

Watch out for those mustard plasters! They do a good job of drawing blood to wherever you may need it to be sure, but you can wind up with some pretty good burns on your skin, too.
+1 for neeb's homemade chicken broth, too. Magic stuff.

Thanks for all the good wishes. I had not considered mustand plaster. I will have to look into it. On the brighter side, my latest blood work indicates that my problem is not due to the thyroid medication (methimazole) that I am currently taking, but that I am infected by something.
Turmeric is something I had started on at one point and then got off track. I'm getting back on track with it. Google around and you'll see that it possibly plays a role in staving of Alzheimers, builds the immune system, and interferes in pathways essential to the development of cancerous tumors.
The milk concoction actually tastes pretty good.
