I just started reading this;

http://www.amazon.com/Al-Qaeda-Reader-Raymond-Ibrahim/dp/038551655X

Good so far. Very informative analysis from an Egyptian researcher who studied at the Library of Congress' Middle East/Arab studies section. Studies radical Islam and it's (mis)teachings back to it's origins.

Many nutjobs use religion as justification for committing attrocities or other selfserving acts. Virturally all religions have been used in some way to justify some whacko agenda.

Spirituallity and regligion are not necessarily the same thing. I like to think spiritual people would never try to justify killing other people in the name of their religion. Guess I am just naive.

i do think his argument for our "cultural" exceptionalism is embarrassingly weak: movies and music? no, our cultural superiority is based entirely on our freedom

skipt and bookworm,

A couple of honest questions:

Why is it so important for you both to be able to claim that America is exceptional? You both seem fixated on the image of the USA being exceptional, why is that? Why the incessant need to assert being number 1?

What makes you think that the US is culturally superior to other cultures?

What makes you think that people in the US have the most freedom? What does "the most freedom" mean to you?

My question was not "what can freedom do for people?".

If you don't want to answer my questions, just write so.

Degaine,

They are not content with themselves so the must be "superior" to something.

De Toqueville does an excellent job of explaining it. Possibly the best critique and explanation of Americans ever written.

Available for free also.

Sorry if a 600 page volume is a bit to much for you.

Who's M. Savage?

Possibly AC will regale us with a short synopsis of De Tocqueville since he seems to have a supernatural knowledge of who has read his work?

Maybe he can exposit on the Federalist Papers as well.

Every citizen of every country thinks their country is exceptional. That is what makes America so exceptional....much like everywhere else.

Cause I was born here. If I was born somewhere else I'd probably live there. I'd also think it was awesome.

To respond to your edit, Skipt:

I think it's interesting that you only live here because it's number 1. If it was number 2 you'd move I guess? But in reality someone says "hey you know America actually isn't number 1" and instead of say "oh sh#t well then I'm moving!" you attack them to discredit them so that you can keep believing that its number 1.

So really, it matters to neither of us that the USA is number 1. What is important is that you are allowed to keep BELIEVING that it is.

That's because you go with the flow.

Learn to think for yourself.

Ahaha oh god. You're right, I should learn to think for myself exactly like you do. USA #1 Look at me I'm a rebel.

By my reasoning people go where they want to (or, more often, stay where they are born). You simply can't think beyond your own criteria for living somewhere because you're so busy thinking for yourself. Try thinking like someone else.

And you're right. I should clearly learn to develop my own opinions. You, sir, are a sharp and insightful character. USA #1

Yeah that wasn't as witty as you thought it might be. Luckily you can still edit it to look witty now and then pretend that my current post is just crazy talk. Hurry, before someone quotes you.
