Could have been better L..... had you spelled his name correctly.
(Or was that a Bush 1 trick, as in where he never pronounced any evil-do'ers name correctly just to make them mental?)

Scott Cosgrove doesn't know who Jeff Lowe is? Is he joking or what?
Oh, having read the entire thread now, I see that Coz was joking.
And also the media and journalists are taking a slating in this thread.
Not all of us are that bad. I have lost work and jobs because I have stuck by my principles.

I think it was more like an Emily Latella moment.
Question is; should I boycott the wedding or attend and scold him. At this point I think I've heard out both sides fully. It was a deal with the devil, and after last weekend I can see more honor in reticence. Success is a dangerous drug that can cost more than it is worth.

Now Russ...why would I want to spell his name correctly when he couldn't even get a few facts straight?
Do you know what an ego-bruiser that is to a writer to have someone complaining about your story--with your by-line right there, and they continuously misspell your name? Like lemon juice on a paper-cut...ow-la-la...
And actually, I got the idea from the movie Uncle Buck--which I watched last month. Remember when John Candy was talking to the Principal with the enormous mole on her face? I almost wet my pants laughing...I thought maybe Tacoda might wet his. ;-)

it was "Fact or Fusion"..... which was actually a line taken off of Tshirt I had of "Lobster Muchacho", or Lobster Boy...... a boy with lobster claws for forearms. All it said was, "Lobster Muchacho..... fact or fusion" I believe from the Future Studio art guys. They also did the "Chicken Boy" shirts.... "too tall to live, too weird to die" was on that one. Still have the Chicken Boy shirt.

Man, we journalists are really taking it on the chin! I write for a number of magazines (as I write this I am in the process of editing...read writing all the copy... for a cycling buyer's guide) including Outside. Please don't lump us all in the same pot. I have been asked to do hatchet jobs on people and have said 'no'. One such 'no' basically cost me my job with that magazine.
Just two days ago, a website screwed up and didn't run an interview with an athlete who returned my call to give me an interview at 10pm the night she was leaving for Beijing. When the interview did not run and the athlete's event had passed, I called up the editor and asked that he send an E-mail to that athlete apologizing for the screw up. The editor did just that.
So, yes, there are some really sleazy, self-serving journalists out there and magazines that are "integrity-challenged". But that is not all of us.

Man, we journalists are really taking it on the chin!
One of life's unexplained mysteries is that just about everyone thinks s/he could be a good writer. That they could slip into our job tomorrow and do it without a problem... probably better than we do it ourselves. Most people also imagine themselves to be intelligent and informed critics, and therefore fully qualified to shred whatever writing they don't like, no matter how ill-informed they may be.
None of which is to say there aren't any bad/lazy/dishonest/unethical writers out there. Nor am I defending PT or his piece in Outside. But as Bruce and Patrick said just above, there are plenty of us who actually work hard, not only at what we do, but at doing it with honesty and respect for our subjects.

Dave, Bruce, Patrick et. al.,
I appreciate your thoughts on this thread, but am definitely not seeing where you and most of your brethren are "taking it on the chin". Nor am I seeing where you in any way need to defend yourselves for what you do for a living.
This thread was about PT and his selling out (of his friend, and therefore his reputation) for $$$ and his name in print. There's no guilt by association here. It's all about Pete's faux pas.
Good heavens, you guys...stop with the defensiveness. Without writers of all breeds, life would be a dust bowl of insipidness and boredom. No one's thinking they can do it better than you (well, most aren't, anyway)--but people certainly have opinions about what they read. And that's been around since writing first appeared and just goes with the territory...as you know.
If you'd like to debate this further, please start another thread...but let's bury this one like Ron suggested. Please.
