Is it inappropriate to retire young? That is my question.

Q-Ball Never heard of anyone looking up from their deathbed and saying, "Man wish I worked more!"
Personally never saw work as anything but slavery by a different name. Ended my 15 yr. teaching career in 2000 at age 46, cashed out my pension plan, bought land and built a house for cash. Worked summers at whatever until 2016 when I took Soc. Sec. No regrets...well except for the two marriages...otherwise I would of bowed out after I had my 40 quarters in.
There's a lot to be said for stepping off the merry-go-round.

Jim, I've got a bit of experience; haven't had a full-time job since 1979. Still though - I'm looking forward to this.

Right on, Dana. My wife and I are headed out on a two week little road trip when I would normally be locked in the classroom. Boooyah.

I apologize. That was a bit obnoxious.
There was a lot that made it possible. I am an RN, that gave me flexibility. I also got a degree in journalism and I've done quite a bit of freelance writing. Between the two I could arrange my life so I had plenty of time off and like most people on this message board, I don't need a lot to live on; that was probably the most important part. If I had worked full time I would have more money saved, but the time off was better.
Personal/family issues kept me in the east, but I'm selling my house in the 'Gunks and moving to Colorado. Pretty darn excited.

Where in Colorado?
Ouray County is the perfect place for a climber who doesn't need to earn an income. Great climbing community, back country skiing, hiking, fishing etc.
Some of the best multi pitch in the country in the Black and only two or three hours from desert towers and the best crack climbing on the planet.

Locker man.
I haven't been since New Year's Eve.
Shoulder problems, surgery, and maybe next month, finally, I will be
on the rock.

BadClimber, thank you
Jim, I'm not very imaginative; I'll be in the front range. I know people in the area and after living in MA, PA, and then CT, anywhere in Colorado will seem like heaven. The east has its charms, I fully appreciate them, and the 'Gunks will always be home - 42 years of climbing there - but change is good.

The worst part of being retired for me is finding people to climb with. Aside from that it’s great. Work is for chumps ;)
