I find it difficult to do parallel turns on my tele gear (Black Diamond Push boots with Work Stynx). It seems like I can't lean forward enough to weight the ski tips. If I lean forward I get off balance because of the free heel. If I don't lean forward then I'm skiing in the back seat.

Telemarking is harder on the knees than alpine. Telemarking is fun as hell. I think that is its only advantage.

Just like alpining, you gotta learn to deal with less than perfect snow with a free heel.

My knees hurt a lot worse after a day of alpining. Tele places strain on the biggest muscles in your bodies (quads, hamstrings) instead of directly on your knees. This was a surprising finding for me and ymmv.

This discussion will be somewhat moot next season. There is talk/minor rumblings of some new hybrid bindings are set to hit the market. Using the new tech toe compatible tele boots, they come with a heel locking option. So if you get caught having to navigate the last 800' of re-frozen mank/breakable crust/whatever, you will be able to lock down the heel, and then release it so you can stride across the flat spot before the car. I will be adapting and I will thankfully draw from the best of both worlds on the same lap.

Wilbeer, I ended up buying the Scarpa T4 after a lot of deliberation and your comments helped. They were a good deal on outdoorprolink. I'll take a pic of my whole setup once they arrive. Now we just need snow on the west coast. I live in Yosemite, no snow here yet, well Clouds rest and I'm sure Tuolumne has a tiny bit.

Wilbeer,
Wondering if that pic you posted of Canadice Hill is in the Finger Lakes region near Canadice Lake?

Mark, you bet. That is Canadice Hill @ Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area.
Been maintaining glades there for 25 years.

Great skiing of all types nordic,Gets Lake effect from Lake Erie.

Just SE of Canadice Lake.My friend Ian lives right at the bottom of a nice 13-1400 ft. vertical drop just south of Honeoye Lake.

Edit;Mark, that was a great time lapse of the Dacks you made!

Earning those turns is an art too, I sure appreciate a well done skin track and listening to the perfect music on my iPod:

Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave but don't leave me
Look around and choose your own ground

For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be

Run, rabbit, run
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race toward an early grave.

Got to love PF for those long days in the trench.

Here's a cool tele video from BITD. Mt. Washington and deep spring conditions:

http://vimeo.com/113924299

edit - I mostly ski tech bindings these days in the backcountry - super lightweight, they actually release - so good for avalanche safety, plus long stride with boots like the TLT 5 or 6. TLTs have so much range of motion in tour mode, that some people even drive with them - guide or industry related, NOT on the freeway. Plus they are solid mountaineering boots. Bellows and duckbills suck with crampons.

I still have fun with tele, but plastic tele boots are so heavy, they're better for resort skiing than touring and climbing :-)

^^^Ha! Hands down or up wilbeer you're welcomed to join our posse if you should find yourself some winter in the Trench of Highway 50 on a hunch you would assimilate well.

Great thread for as my wife calls it "the season of mono-thought". Can't believe I'm leaving CA this weekend, poor timing but at least I'm headed to Bozeman, MT with hopes of seeing the Blue Light flash on the Baxter.
