On no wind days here in the Gorge, people would grab their windsurf boards and go out onto the river, paddling with their masts. I think that's how the whole sport started, out of boredom.

All I can say is if this looks boring then you are one cold, cold fish. Perhaps you're a frozen Cod lying on Artic ice pack.

All I can say is, I want to SUP as good as her. She gives me inspiration ...

Is it hot in here or what?

Just another contrived excuse to buy more sh#t. I would do it but I would have to pay someone to stand on the back of it with a cattle prod to keep me from falling into a boredom coma.

In any wave-surfing setting- SUP is always gonna be a contrivance.
Prone paddling and popping up "stands" the test of time.

Ah Hammish makes some good and not so correct points. I surf both short board and a short paddle board 7'4" Naish Rocket here in Hawaii. Much more dangerous dropping into a slab here on a paddle board. The board has more volume, you have a paddle and all kinds of caca can happen when you get rolled. Not to mention punching back through without the ability to duck dive. I do pick empty waves over crowded waves in the big stuff. I will say it's certainly more dangerous for the operator and those around them. He is correct that it provided access to the waves without the understanding of how the wave hierarchy works. Here uncles have the right of way then who sits the deepest and most critical, but the deepest is now 20-30 ft further out on a SUP. It also opened up a lot of breaks prone surfers passed on over the years.

I spent 20hrs on my paddle board last week in 5-6ft Hawaiian waves, I only spent 2hrs on my surfboard. Fact is it takes less effort and you can ride waves all day on an sup and IMO it's actually more fun these days. We do need to police the lineup and teach this new generation the same way we regulated snowboarders tracking out a powder stash on one run. I was so guilty in the sideways movement....SUP is the snowboard movement of the 80's.

P.S just sit outside and down a bit from the grouchy surf pack, as uncle" says deh always miss da waves and just picke'm off one by one....

Let's be perfectly clear. There is stand up paddle-boarding and there is surfing. Those two activities don't overlap.

People have been paddling longboards into waves since the inception of the sport and, yes, it is a lot of board to manage and can be difficult in some wave conditions. At least for the first handful of waves.

Stand up paddle-boarding as "exercise" or even as a mode of locomotion on the water is a contrivance of the highest order. I'm awaiting the trolling motor mount for one.
