If anyone is in the greater Seattle area next week on November 5 (Bothell, to be exact), you can catch some pizza, beer, and these guys playing at Sparta's Pizza:

I haven't seen this guy before, but apparently he's already got quite the reputation. Blind fiddler named Michael Cleveland. Unreal!! Seriously...give this a listen:

Nice find! It's hard to imagine what it would be like to have that level of mastery. The fun...the joy of just sitting around jamming. I love jamming with my mediocre abilities on mando, 5-string and guitar, but to be at that level must be like that--on crack.

Had an awesome time at some local Seattle friend's house last night, jamming into the wee hours. (I'm not in the pic, but behind the lens).

Amy STers going to Wintergrass this week? First time for me, and I'll be schlepping my mando along with me all four days, and hope to find people who might have the patience to jam with me.

Let me know if any of you are going! Would love to say hey in person!

In the eighties I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time. After playing one short set with Joe Craven at Mansion Cellars, I got invited to accompany Robbie Ikes on stage. He ripped the paint off the walls on a Dobro while I cranked out random accompaniment. It was all improvised as we had never jammed before. Joe Craven and I didnt get along. But Robbie was totally humble and supportive. He went on to Nashville shortly after that. Davis Ca was for a short time a mecca of bluegrass, featuring bands like Born in a Barn, Joe Cravens Sharp Five and my duo called Wilted Lettuce and the Skunkwater Blues Band.

I love bluegrass, even in the rudimentary setting of the music.

It amazes me, though, what the masters of the craft can do, using the skills and techniques of Bluegrass to create something new.

Here are three masters, some might say the best on their instruments, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Stuart Duncan. They needed a 4th, so they managed with Yo-Yo Ma.

Their precision and mastery of timing and rhythm are breathtaking. All written by them. I particularly like the last, with Aoife O'donovan.

I also had the great luck of seeing them perform in person, amazing.

Dave McClellan still plays mandolin. He used to play blue grass up in Tuolumne. Pam and Dave McClellan's son is now a summer ranger in the Meadows. He was the belayer on the first ascent of Belay-o-matic. By the 5th, 6th or 7th bolt, he declared he was just a belaying machine.
