Changing the political paradigm from the ludicrous "you're either with us or against us" to the hopefulness of "we are all in this together" was a remarkable bit of political climate change we can believe in. Merkle can finally shake off the back rub cooties that Shrubie gave her.

WNUPS!

No comments on my nomination of Jan for Supertopo Peace Prize.
See, she flies under the radar.
She's the Greg Mortenson of Supertopo...
I second my own nomination!

Speech writers did good.
He even said he didn't deserve it, but cut to the chase and mentions accepting it as;

"...a mandate for a call to action..."

Try as I might I can not imagine Bush saying that in the context presented.

Personally I'd rather have the world encouraged by our potential rather than fearful of our potential, but hey, that's just me.

Interesting times we live in...

Bush couldn't pronounce "mandate" let alone use it in a coherent sentence.

What did President Obama do to earn this?

My scorecard says he hasn't done anything.

He's not done alot, and admitted exactly that in his speech. Basically said he doesn't deserve it compared to other winners and the only reason he's accepting is because he wants to use it as motivation to make some things happen in the future.

Hey Philo,

Bush tried but it came out “Call for man-date action”, with a slight overemphasis on the stressed syllable combined with a loquacious Texan drawl and the base got all bothered and worried, so he clarified it later as a “Call to take action for personal time.” The speech writers were happy, if confused.

He was nominated seven times for the Noble Prize for Literature, for spawning so many new meaning and new words that a new edition of the OED is in the works.

Samuel Beckett, who really did win the Noble Prize for Literature said it best:

“No matter. Try again.

“Fail again.

“Fail better.”

Something the Swede's never consider is that they are, on the margin, meddling in our internal affairs.

Except, as mentioned upthread, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a Norwegian committee, under the terms of Alfred Nobel's will.

Perhaps part of the reason why Obama was given the award was that he is the first non-white person to be elected leader of the USA, and so a great symbol of hope to peoples elsewhere - just because he got elected. Living, visual proof. The award was as much to the people of the US for electing him, and the hope he represents, as it was for anything he's done so far.

"But Obama has changed the entire dynamic of US foreign relations"

He talks a different game, but situaution on the ground is no different than it was under Bush / Cheney (except Obama has escalated the troop numbers in Afghanistan).

Obama hasn't even closed Guantanamo Prison.

The Nobel Peace Prize has just been de-valued down to the level of a children's popularity contest when it's awarded to those who haven't done anything.

They like him. They really really like him. (apologies to Sally Field. She actually did something to earn that Oscar)

Mortenson would not agree with you.

And that's the difference...

half empty -vs- half full...
potential -vs- hopelessness
actively -vs- passive
spew -vs- dialogue

Nobody seriously believes President Obama will ever achieve his goal of a world without nuclear weapons either, but no one close to him has the balls to call him on it.

I'll bet MORE countries have nukes when Obama leaves office than had nukes when he was sworn in.

(and less people will have jobs)

reddirt - "This is both a carrot to uphold the expectations that Obama's Presidency created (creates) & as close to a Fawk You to Bush/Cheney/Rove that a group of dignitaries can come up with."

I agree!
