"The locals already know where the good stuff is, and some of them might not tell you especially if you're a guidebook author" - well i am a local and a guidebook author and i know most of the other local first ascentionists in nor cal and we know about pretty much all the "good stuff" already, thats why i am the guidebook author. but thanks for your feedback - you are right about mentioning the previous lassen authors. that was my section and if it is not in that section we at least might have mentioned the nor-west cali book somewhere in our book or it was a mistake. i dont even have a copy yet myself so i cant be sure what exactly is in it. as far as not having some of the destination areas in nor cal well i think we do, that might be a matter of opinion. if we missed one or two it is because it was not as good as somewhere in the lower part of "nor cal" that we added, just simple geography not really an error. also what is more developed and close to populations sometimes might get extra credit as well. we had limited space to work with and the book is already a bit bigger than we planned. so we didnt want to hype an area that was underdeveloped and far from people when there are great areas like shuteye and trinity aretes that deserve the hype and the space in our book. we also save areas that are being developed or are still mostly unknown for the next edition so that we ease into it. please keep giving us feedback positve or negative so we can improve the next edition, thank you all very much.
check out some new info and pics on my new blog for nor cal climbing/bouldering; http://www.summitorplummet.blogspot.com

Max J - Good to know there were/are little local guidebooks for Lassen ('01 & '91). I've never seen one, but I want one :) Are they still available? If yes, then we'll for sure put the beta in the guide. We tried really hard to give the local authors props. I think that shows. But some must have slipped thru.
But thank you.
As far as it dipping south a bit... heck yeah it does! So you get MORE for your $$$, what are you complaining about again? Too many crags in a book is a bad thing? Would you be happier if we pulled them out? ;) Can't Nor Cal and So Cal just get along?
I added them (Needles/Kern/southern East Side) because I was fearing that we'd never get the So Cal Vol. 2 done. The first one nearly killed me. And I really wanted my research/trips/topos to not go to waste. But we will get 'er done I think with Randy Vogel on the team for Vol 2. I have SLO, SB, Ventura, Ridgecrest done already.
And the upper Nor Cal sections are solid! Chris knows his stuff and that's that. Buy it (call your shop and demand a copy!) and get on the road and enjoy! I know that most shops on the East side have them now, and Mtn. Air Sports in SLO got them.
Bernard! Call me when you're in SLO town! And thanks for the Cosmic pic! And someone go buy Summit a beer.

Just so you know, my "critique" was meant more of a friendly jab than anything else. However, I HAVE NOT actually gotten my hands on the guide so I didn't know it included so many true Nor Cal areas. Good to know. I guess I'll actually have to buy one!

Paul, jab well taken. Just didn't want the masses to get the wrong idea. We have it all covered... and then some! I couldn't help but add the Needles and Kern, two favorite areas. And the east side just sort of happend thanks to Marty Lewis.
so yeah... you are going to have to buy one! Marty does free shipping so that's cool. Right to your door, save the gas for the Road Trip you're going to want to take after you read it.
Also, the table of contents is on slatervision.com on the Cali Road Trip updates page in the "sample pages".
And thank you Mr. E, enjoy!

Just got mine in the mail...nicely done! I'm sure it'll help me get out to a few new places and it seems a great resource to hand off to friends visiting from out of state.

Looking forward to getting my hands on the book. Wonderful spots in NoCal....hope to get back there one of these days. Had fun doing early guides for Lassen and the Crags. Some of the best climbs had sketchy access outside of Chico. Curious how that was addressed, or even included? cheers......John Bald

Isn't Chico where you can't bowl on the sidewalk? Funky little city law...anyhow, back to the guide. Got a copy in my hands today and am STOKED on the fat-ness of it.
The 'classic' climber in me really likes the hand drawn topo look and absolutely LOVES the hair raising adventure that comes from using them. I can't wait to get out there!!!!
Good job Summit & Slater, I'm already in line for So. Cal vol 2.
Edit: I learned about the Chico no bowling on sidewalk rule from the trivia section that is at the back of the California Road Trip guide.

For the faithful (and I guess anyone else too...) don't forget to download the 6 other free topos we couldn't squeeze into the guidebook from slatervision.com on the Nor Cal page... http://www.slatervision.com/id21.html
Topos include:
Fairview Regular Route (one of my all time favorites)
Footsteps Crag (Bigfoot Country Climbing guide was the source)
White Punks On Dope (also super classic... )
Lover's Leap Main Wall (wads of classics)
Lover's Leap East Wall (one of my all time favorite pieces of granite)
Hammer Dome (a recent discovery for me... awesome easy/moderates)

Received it today - wow it's huge! Can't believe the number of areas and routes covered, there's enough for a multi-year road trip in there! The photos do a great job to inspire too, thanks guys as this must have been a hell of a lot of work to put this all together! I look forward to visiting some new areas I had never heard of before...

Bill Serniuk is the man. I'd never heard of him until I did research for this book, so let me take a second and give the guy his due...
I saw his stuff popping up on the web. He is featured on supertopo. He is often the subject of hilarious posts. I've never met him but his forte was shooting first ascents and historical photos from an era that is now legendary. In my opinion, so is Bill. His photos added that "history" feel, so important to good guidebooks. His photos add perspective, and give the viewer a feeling of tradition and respect. His newer stuff, his scenics, are also top notch. He has the eye of an artist and the last thing I will say for now about Bill is... don't stop taking photos! You're an asset to the climbing community and thank you for making this guide so much better than it would have been without your pics.
Not to wax on and on, but the community really was a huge part of this book, which is why it came out so rad (IMHO). Great shots Bill, Jim, Jerry, Peter, and on and on. Thank you climbing community for pitching in. May it bring you to new riches.
and Bill will have to answer your question Roxy, it isn't mine to give away. But it would make a rad poster. Bill...?
